could not agree more- that was as good as it got on mink- a bunch of pretty good minkers, discussing their craft without all the pissing matches we see so often today. That era might have been the golden age of the internet vis a vis trapping.
I know a few have saved it- I think Chris M sent it to me- but I lost it when my computer crashed

agree- but keep in mind that in many cases, the very organizations we think are going to protect us, betray us.
Quite honestly, while I'd love to be 18 again for so many reasons, I'd hate to be an 18 year old with todays trapping future to look forward to unless things change dramactically.
We are the minority- a very very minor minority in the world- how we can survive without compromise, is beyond me. Where do we draw the line?
Wish I knew.................

mick- who orignally posted that?
5 feet out seems far-
heres a question- does a freezer work more efficently in outside temps at 35-40 than hotter? seems like it would, but things aren't always what it seems. How about it real cold weather- many in this country, let freezers in unheated garages -so in frezing weather, does it work harder to keep it "warm"?

Auctions over- a total (I think, Hornhunter can confirm) $475 was rasied- so a check for $237.40 will be sent to USSA and the same to FTA.
Thanks to all that participated!

ok, I see now where you are coming from- I tried something both ways, then made up my mind.
maybe a timeline will hep?
2006- tried a few
2007- went to screens, liked them, but didn't like replacing them, and didn't notice many is any misses
thus my comment in may 2008- I hated replacing so many, didn;t see all that big a difference but that fall, 5 months after my statment, decided to use them again.
2008- stuck with screens, after all 1 year wasn't conclusive and I felt like a trapper with bigger traps and screens, but had bad screens, nothing but problems with bubbles, so went back 100% to poly for rest of that season
2009- said heck with the screens, went 100% with poly, but noticed a few misses
2010- with the laminated, 4 coiled traps, I'm going back to screens for 1 reason and one reason only- bigger kill area.
I too want to catch all those rolling coyotes...........
as far as a pan cover, you can have it- if a space under pan is all I want, I'll still take poly every time-

mark- this post, previously posted, answers all your questions-
Been going back and forth on screens.
I'm a fan of polyfil, so went a few years using some screens, some ploy and decided we liked the screens better
First year went all to screens (on the montanas) , loved them, swore I never use anything but-
then the next year, the but was our screens were just a titch too small- causing nothing but problems so after a few days of trying to adapt ways to get them to wrok, we said heck with it and went to poly for that season, and last.
but could tell the difference by one thing- tracks in the pattern mean I missed a few without screens.
going back to screens this year, esp with going to 4 coil traps.
in reference to the above, is the only time I have ever said screens were a pain to use- where did you get the impression, other than the above scenario, that I thought otherwise?

you can say Groeny paid $8 for a season average all you want, but it still doesn't make it true-
and I'm not a groeny fan by any means- but fair is fair.
thats right- the $13 was from TWO other buyers- and it received 12 at auction?
why not just up and say HP might have gotten screwed- instead of defending EVERY little thing NAFA does?
but according to you, they don't even need bathroom deoderizer-

no beav it would not- then I'd move to the next best- long before I used procoon, I knew the truth of lures vs bait in the dead of winter. The secret is a strong call lure that doesn't freeze- how you arrive at that, is up to you and whats available
we will continue to agree to disagree- you know what works for you, I know what works for me-
barn coon aren't woods coon. They don't hole up for long periods of time- they are active far more.
plus consider your average temps vs mine- 4 degrees difference meaning 23 vs 27 and 29 vs 33. Add in barn, silo, etc warmth.........
now I know some like steven49er, in the far north, have no problems using bait in buckets-- and that might be because of the difference in winter fat buildup (corn vs not)- and it might not- just an idea.

why not breed her to a small male? your pups should mostly be smaller- eps if your bitches hertatige is for staadard sized- genetics is all important here-
I hd a beagle bitch- 15 and 1/2 inches- out of 30 plus pups none every went over 15, and 4 finished.
trust me, a 100 lb lab moves exactly like a lb should grew up with lots of labs including Fd chs- my son in law owns a 100+ male tat is all ab in eveyway-
not sure why you ade this post- you got youur mind made up so don't breed her

Beaver get pounded I think if they are in bank dens- i've seen flash floods come through, where after there are dead beaver all over- I think they are in the dens, it floods, by the time the dens get flooded and the come out, the flood is so fast and furiuos they just get tumbled and drowned- dead beaver aftr floods used to surprize me, not so anymore
I think normal floods don't affect coon much beyond the bottom land coon on the bigger rivers-
but i think the SE Mn August floods 2 years aog, rainy period then 17 inches overnight on these hills caused massive runoff floods that took many houses off of foundations, and twisted train tracks like pretizels- places miles from any creeks or rivers-
imagine those type of mud/water floods 27 times in one year in the old town of Beaver-
I do think, it hurt our coon population quite a bit- all in the SE report last 2 years low numbers- I think ithsi s one main reason why, allow perhaps not the only reason-

mark- not my info to give- suffice it to say, its a totally different mindset, than how i'm doing it now.
right now, I have say 20% of one type of location, and will make that type of location, 80% next year.
And I'm going to stop trying to trap coyotes I already caught! LOL

Boib-
I do believe, that the local good local buyers, are paying what that fur is worth the day they buy it. I know every time I'm at lees, hes on the phone 3-4 times with guys aorund the country, discussing the market.
I remember this- one time, a few years back, I was selling maybe 40 mink along with other stuff- and I had just gotten priveo nthem ink- the sale was interrupted by a phone call- and it was someone telling Lee the bottom had fallen out of the mink market-
I could hear the conversation, and was thinking DAMN
he got off the phone, told me the details, and then said don;t worry- our deal was already made-
thats why I keep going back- and mink fell from $18 averages to almost 1/2 that

interesting- I find it much harder to open them hanging up-
I just lay on their back, ring the legs, open them up then hang

make a semi circle cut out around those feeding places in the bank 10-12 inches- lure and or bait. I use castor lure, and usually add a few partially peeled sticks-- its my go to set on the creeks around here.
