Just want to set the record straight.
Although Ive done my shair of trapping, 3-4 weeks full time at a shot mostly, full time, and a lot more part time trapping, and have gained a small amount of noteriaty thru my supply biz. I havent even come close to having the experience of Robert Waddell.
Robert has been trapping full time 4-6 months and a lot more in receint years, over the west, south, midwest and in between.
He has trapped southern swamps for fur and adc, out west for bobcat and coyote, live market trapped, the list goes on and on.
He traps for a paycheck full time, wether fur or ADC work for his paycheck. Some very few people can claim to do. He doesnt run a big supply house, manufacture products on a huge scale , have a catalog business to back up his trapping. He doesnt token trap here and there for pictures to back up a catalog, make some videos, or feed an article writing machine. Nothing wrong with any of what I just said, but I have seen in this buz, the pictures for a catalog or to make videos becomes the primary reason to trap as their profit basis, and actual TRAPPING for a profit becomes secondary. Now dont take this as Im saying anyone who has ever made trapping videos isnt a real trapper, but there are a few that trap for the video market and most of us probibly have an idea what I'm talking about.
I can count the number of people on one hand who still truely trap full time mostly, for the private market for fur or live markets/meat markets or true ACD work. And Im not talking trapping squirrels and coons and bats in town as ADC work which is an entirely different field.
Bottom line of all this, I, for one, am NOT on the same level nor claim to be, that Robert has been on for many years now.
Up til now Ive always had a full time job to float the boat, and never HAD to trap to float my boat in such a fashion as Robert has. I am flattered by some opinions of me by some good friends of mine, but, I do want all here to know, putting me on same level as Robert is not really fair to him in my own mind.
I have entered into a self employed position now to where most of my income will be supply/ manufacturing, and fur trapping in winter months, and probibly a 70%-30% mix respectivly. We'll see what happens, I dont have any idea what will happen a year or two down the line. Maybe it will pan out, and maybe Ill be working for someone else again at a factory job, who knows at this point. Fur and possibly some ADC type trapping will be a part of making a living for me now, so I look at the last 29 years of trapping as practice for this moment. "going to do it" and doing it is a big difference.
Robert has done this for years, and such as himself ARE in a leauge of their own, of which I am not, just to set record straight for everyone.
I want to give credit where credit due.
