I haven nothing personal against any theory, but as Chris said, if you put out a theory then you should be prepared to discuss it.
I do agree with the core theory. I believe in it because it's logical to me- I believe coyotes know their area well, and that when something new is added to it, they are a little cautious.
Wiley posted elsewhere that he put deer out for his local coyotes at his home place to feed on so he could observe them. He made the conclusion that it took 3 days for them to start feeding on it just about everytime....
Scott says: "it takes 3 days for my scent to dissipate enough for these coyotes to feed on those deer. Everything else is constant."
I need to ask- how did you come to the conclusion it was human scent? couldn't a just as plausible and logical reason be because it was new- and it took 3 days to acclimate themselves to it? -------------------------------------------------
I guess I do make more flat subtle sets in summer- but I think thats because flat sets are so easy to make and blend in hot weather over wet and cold.

Only wildlife biologist would know what the alpha looks like. I notice he is posting on a cat thread similar to his coyote thread. Like he has taken a lot cats.

I put out deer carcases and sometime they will lay there for weeks before a coyote will touch them. And most of the time it's after the first snow fall. But It's usually a lot more then 3 days. And I have seen where they go untouched and just rot away. They are a draw at all times because I see tracks and scat near by but there not all way's eaten on.

Re: carcasses: it all depends on the time of the year and the weather- meaning how hungry is that coyote. I've seen them about half disappear overnight, and I've seen them lay until they rot also.

lol, depends on if the alpha tells the others it`s ok to eat or not. maybe he just pee`d on it and saving it for himself. my wife says if that hussy at the gym doesn`t quit staring at me , then she is going to start peeing on me every morning. oh boy, lucky me. nothing like dueling pee`ers drenching you to show ownership. I toild her it wouldn`t work as everyone knows a coyotye will steal a meal faster if ity`s stolen instead of found. go buy some `maters at the store, and then go steal some. you tell me which ones taste better. see.

lol, I`m sure I`d forget more than I remembered! I`m kind of a "hey there`s a turd and a fresh track, lets set a trap there" kind of guy. that and " is it time to eat yet?". also a "you skin those coyotes and I`ll restock the pee and bait jugs and clean the banana peels out of the truck" kind of rider.

The coyotes Scott feeds at his house are used to coming into that area and I would expect them to be their for one reason a food source, I would think the idea of human scent being the issue is spot on, everything else is the same, except for the "freshness" of human odor when he adds new to the pile. These coyotes come onto his smaller property from other areas they are still going to be scent shy for sure. That is why a trapline that can be looked at every 3 days will produce better in areas of exploited coyote populations over 1 that needs to be looked at every day. Just because something is new to the area doesn't make it a danger to all coyotes at all times for sure! There are plenty of alpha male coyotes in the summer as any of them protecting young are alpha or piss poor parents. The aggression can change between age group of those pairs, but get into the denning area and they will for the majority defend them well. Come fall the need to control turf wains and then it is all about taking care of themselves and the pups have moved out in to other draws and trying it on their own, if weather permits they can family group up to kill larger prey, the pack structure issue is not the norm in most coyotes as the density's are there to justify it. Little in the way of territory control come fall and winter until breeding season approaches and the cycle starts over again.

ya, looks liike a lot of to do about nothing to me. folks bored or trying to make things a lot more than they are. brian hit the nail on the head. heck, coyotes can`t read or count either one. let alone send a rocket ship to the moon. a first year trapper can catch 100 in the right areas of the country if he is a worker. and if he hangs out in the same area and snares too he can exterminate a local population. no biggy at all.

please introduce me to that first year trapper... LOL
sure- he COULD take a 100, and he COULD also fly to the moon if he built a rocketship....

I know several tman. thet go nuts over catching the first one and then go bonkers trapping. i can think of one in southern illinios this year. if you watched an instructional video or had a bit of nmentoring , early on you or I or anyone could have done it. most of us could catch 500-1,000 head a year right now but it would be insane as the market just isn`t there. as could most of us be great gmen too ,but lack the patience and ability to deal with the public and don`t like having a boss. but the trapping end, no biggy. it`s just not that hard or requires much more than average intelligence. heck, anymore school kids can catch coyotes with regularity, the lack of wheels being the only thing holding them back.
