its a topic of another tread- but animals certainly can connect cause and effect, can remember past events, etc - now- call that reasoning or whatever- semeantics don't change what is.

I guess this question will never be addressed-
K9’s questions were along the lines of what sets and/or lures are age and gender specific, so that he can target the alpha males, and how does he know when he catches one
I wonder why.......

I think I know Steve Bob I used to be a bartender. I would have served a coyote, would have even bought him a beer if he could sit and talk with me. I have served some females that were coyote ugly. Actually have done more than served some of them, but that's a whole other thread.

A freind sent me Junes coyote video. that guy is pretty animated! I've skimmed through it because its painful to watch LOL He does talk alot about alpha male coyotes in it. and that he wants to catch them first. He thumps his coyotes but the interesting part of that part of the video isn't that he thumps them but that he DOESN'T thump the alpha males cause well they are alpha males so he shoots them. Is this guy for real??? His set making is way different than all the good coyote trappers ive been around. except he advocates to new trappers to NOT use a pan cover. And also contridictaory to another legend coyote trapper on that other site mark claims western coyotes are much more spooky of humans and human odor than MI coyotes. the whole video is really strange I'll try to sit through the whole thing tonight Jeff

Forgot to add he says in the video coyotes will not work a high backing. and the backing needs to be low.

I noticed that right off on his posts. The only surprise to me is that the western ones are harder, but I suppose if lot's of ADC going on they have been worked pretty hard by fall.

there is no adc in cattle the country of western nebraska. I intentionally make pocket type dirtholes in the bottoms of high banks, to eliminate 50% of access to the coyote. and if I get a backside digger, that is my go to set. sucker set at the bottom of a high bank, 3 feet straight up and down if i can find it, and then plant or find a place with 2 natural grass clumps or bushes and make the set direct underneath. with a trap blind set and blended on top between the 2 clumps. or just snare him. or justr blind set the outside corn row with a little guiding, like the guys do cats. with a heap big sucker set 10-20 feet on each side of the hidden blendedtrail set. let him do the work. I notice zag likes those bank sets. anyway, so much for the low backing stuff, simply isn`t so in my world.

k9 mentioned elsewhere the number of coyotes with birdshot. We aren't anything like the pheasant country iowa is, but even here, its amazing at how many have bb's in their butts. Plus every farmer shooting at them, every deer hunter, etc.... I think coyotes are spooky about everywhere nowadays.... all I can say is high backings, I use them all the time here- like Bob, I find them to be a bonus in that they cut down 180 of the approach. because these are handy- heres a couple of high backings from KS 2nd big male in as many days. this backing was twices as high when set made

His coyote line from what i saw on the video he was using all 1.75's We've all been down that road on here before His snares were 3/32 in the open I don't think i know a serious coyote snare man that uses that cable seriously in the open. Here you would see skid marks where the coyote was trying to turn inside out to miss the 3/32 cable that RK rightly defines as "Rope" LOL All in all not a great dvd im glad i didn't spend any money on it and if his book is the same which he says the book is based on same info then i wouldn't buy the book either. And how in the hell can he identify an alpha male in the catch circle? He sure claims to be able too. cause he shoots them to scary to thump i guess LOL Jeff

I do not necessarilly agree with it just a guess as to his reasoning.

well thats assinine garman if thats what he thinks. The most aggressive coyote i had all year was a pup. Had him in the pee cage for quite some time and every time i went in there he was all teeth. for the first month he would howl and bark at me. In fact almost all the smaller pups i caught in Oct and Nov were aggresive enough that i thought it was odd they were so aggressive as pups never seen that before. Maybe they were all Alphas or they had rabies Wiley is trying to pin him down on this alpha deal but i don't know that mark will show his as$ any more over there. Jeff

Only thing I can figure, the alphas must have a big A tattooed on their forehead.

I got into a major discussion with Asa about high backings some time back. I set up against them all the time. Of course he and I disagreed to thebitter end.

I have set up against trees at times (big trees). The backing doesn't have a thing to do with anything "IF" the coyotes are there.

Agreed. I have to set into high cover just to avoid chisel plows and anhydrous knives. The theory that was submitted to me is that if the coyote cannot see all around, he becomes "wary" and unlikely to work a set.
Unfortunately the theory is not studied by coyotes, and several of us posted photo after photo of coyotes caught in heavy cover and against high backings.

I go to the UP convention every year, and talk to a lot of UP coyote trappers. Seem like those that have trapped elsewhere, say there is no difference in coyotes for all practical uses.
Edge? didn't you tell me that many times also?
I do know, that the truck has to leave the driveway at least sometimes, to catch coyotes in the UP.....

We do have G-men here and there around the state that try to work coyotes, and in the past had a few good ones, but now they mostly are gopher chokers and p-dog poisoners. All the adc that gos on for yotes here lasts from march to may, and very little of it. I know nothing about eastern yotes but I have no trouble making 1st night catches here just a little east of Mark, maybe we need to get him some of Stefs lure.
