How do you know?
How do you know if you caught him, or missed him?
size and age aren't defintive by any means....

you don`t know, unless in the spring denning. that`s the ludacrousness of this trap the alpha first stuff. heck, I want all 6 the first run. not one of them. plus the idea you can set for one and not the others is just book material and not trapping material. but everyone is an expert anymore. mer, I just go out and catch as many as I can and usually that`s all that are there, or so close it`s good enough. I can`t help what shows up after I leave, but if he/she is there when i`m there, then we leave togather.

I trap all the alpha males first Amazing what a guy can get away with on that other site and nobody calls anybody on it. Jeff

Thats my feelings also- there is no way to tell unless you see him in intereactions with other coyotes.
being big and bad just means he's big and bad TO YOU.

If you really did catch the alpha male, the next male in the pecking order will become the new alpha male, so you really didn't catch the alpha male, did you? lol

so what exactly is the alpha male? I'd assume each family groups male is an alpha? or not?
aren't alpha coyotes more big frogs in little ponds rather than as in wolves?

I've caught pack leaders (i believe)...first set, first check or 2nd day 3rd set or 4th day 1st set......or last day after he pawed at the sets, etc....makes no difference on catch ratio (for me)......catch the dumb ones quick and move out...I don't care what order anyone is caught or do I care......like bob says, alot go in the truck quick and then you move down the road to the next fresh batch of dumb ones........ matter of fact most are dumb and no reason to set for any one particular coyote as your just....ummmm......whezzzing yourself...lol

Yeah I asked over there how do you know? It's all very trendy to claim you are targeting alpha males. Some whom I have heard bring it up lately are just happy to catch "A" coyote, so whats all this alpha talk? Did not get an answer to my question by the way. Bob do ya make other guys roll over and pee in submission or do ya just run em out of the country?

I just huff huff real low and menacing, and hang my weiner out and act like I`m humping some imaginary object, arm motions and all. generally works if they aren`t gay.

wouldn't the alpha male and female be the mated breeding pair that holds or controls territory against others especially the core areas of the family group.... so in theory....wouldnt they at least be hitting the end of there second year or older for a true alpha status?
seems at least to me an active alpha pair holding territory would keep displacement or the shuffle in a more active state through certain areas....in the fall with roaming yearling's and later with betas reaching sexual maturity looking for territories of their own... which in the long run could also be as beneficial or more if you removed the existing alpha pair right off the bat....only a thought.... but thoughts go both ways...
also seems a two year old or better dog might be more in tune with adverse conditioned responces... if there is such a thing in the long run, in the wild to matter....
dont know how you would tell if you got the alpha unless you go with bobs first post or checked the female for evidence of having pups....jim

I questioned this when it first came out.....I kinda liked catching the big mama first, especially with fall litter trapping.....the others seemed to come quicker then.
Often, on lots of sign, I ping a pup or two and the place goes dead........
Regardless, male or female, theres just no way, tried and true, to control what gets there first. Is there?
