a couple of coyote tracks inside the trap, but not on the pan- I went away from screens as the Montana and soft peat and screens don't mix- pan is too high (and it cannot be adjusted up or down only straight) and you get a bouncy effect- so better to loose 1 or 2 such as this, than the alternative. packing dirt takes care of the problem but too cold to use anything with moisture

I want a lure that will make the animal go wild and dig to the southern hemisphere. Haven't found it yet.

Musher try some keg creek 1-11 decoy and wolfers PAC I think you will find some good digging to take place.

Looked out the window this morning and had a coyote jumping around in a victor 1.75 in my field. Nice prime and good looking fur for a coyote blackhammer caught anyway. Used a lot of peat moss in a stepdown.Used a large amount of bait as t-man suggests. A lot of fun and a change of pace from coon and water animals.

Musher try some key creek 1-11 decoy and wolfers PAC I think you will find some good digging to take place. Yup, we've all heard of the "China Syndrome" Musher, that's a scent that make'em dig to get there!

Tman enlarge your pans and no worries The 9C pan from PIT makes a big increase in kill area inside the jaws and a circle pan to me better than a rectangular pan. I will be switching out all of my older bridgers with the std PIT pans to the 9c's so far this year they have proven their worth even over the standard PIT pans. here is a Montana pan happen to have a few Montana traps left laying around versus the 9C pan from PIT notice the difference the tops are lined up the same for reference.

The increase in kill area of the pan is quite a bit. When factoring in the size to begin with.

Wow down this way 1-11 gets dug at with some gusto. odd how different reactions from different geographic locations. Showtime bait is another that the canines really dig at to find the source. Wolfers pac is yet another in my area.

It's the desire of wanting to dig is what I'm looking for, they shouldn't have the opprotunity to dig because if they're that close to the set, they should be in the trap! Addressing TC's comment about the difference in reactions to scents in different parts of the country. Absolutely true and my observation as well. Note: I edited my original reply after the 2nd sentence because I've made the same statement many times overthe years on here and deleted it as not wanting to be boorish.

Never, testing of lures and baits and sets after I am gone and come back through have shown the aggressive digging responses I know if that bait or lure does such, with a deep and narrow hole set they are mine.
One can tell from using different attractors on an m-44 as well if it is a good trap bait or not. hair and rolling on the m-44 exposed tells me those baits are far better trap attractors than getter attractors.

I wish I'd thought to have brought my camera when I was testing my homemade bacon bait! You would've liked to have seen those diggings that were in a like manner as you described LOL Instead of my normal 1" hole 8" deep test hole, I used one of Rich's 3" augers to full depth plus more so the holes were real deep and tossed down a tennis ball size gob of bait. Had to look about like this!! LOL

The best digging response I have seen is the Showtime bait. When I made deep test hole they dug from every direction to get to it.

A tennis ball piece of bait would be rough on the wallet.

Marty yep feel that is the key a deep hole,,separates things, they may paw or scratch at in a shallow hole but a deep hole really shows, the want of,the attractor.

I have used a lot of different lures and baits over the years and have never had one that produced a consistent digging response, the best I have seen has been using natural bait like 1/2 a prairie dog down the hole. Same goes with M-44s some weeks coyotes will visit them and there will be lots of kickbacks, scratching, pissin around them but few pulls then the next week they just walk up and pull, no idea what the trigger is. Trapperman, not sure how you lure/bait but I prefure to have 2 lure focal points at a set usally I will use a rock or cow chip 14-16 inches in front of hole which puts the trap between the hole and cow chip, with bait down hole and lure under the chip this makes it more of a walk through situation and will usally result in more tracks on pattern as his focus point switches back and forth.
