one question that needs to be addressed-
DPs came onto the market because of 2 things- they were, for all practical purposes dog proof, and they were pretty much coon specific traps.
When you add a push pull trigger- neither of things things is still valid
so, IMNSHO, push pull trigger traps, should not be called "dps"
Good Point, haven't caught a dog yet but guess it is possible. Wish they were sp (skunk proof) as I am catching skunks in both the pull and push pull traps. Only one house cat so far and that in a grizz.
Do remember a picture posted from Brent aka Lynxcat from Idaho a few years back of a coyote caught in a dp trap, seemed it was a grizz and with the pull trigger.

has anyone caught a dog? I think the size of the hole is a restriction in its self you are more likely to catch a dog by the tounge than the foot!

I've talked to several people that use push pull, and they have caught dogs- in some case lab sized dogs

You know of labs being caught by the foot? Anyone have a picture of that to PM?
The 1.2" opening excludes most dogs outside of very small toy dogs and I would be far more at ease setting these for coons around dogs than any foot hold for sure, to reduce the risk of catching said dog. I don't know of any foothold with that small of an area inside the jaws?
They are for the most part dog proof, is any trap 100%? Hard to say but catching dogs in a Dagger even with push/pull is really a non issue for most people most of the time.
If you don't want to call a dagger a DP so be it, I call them a coon catching machine. You can make them harder on the down stroke by adding more cotton balls under the trigger if it really worries you.
Versitile for sure.

I would have to see it to believe it with lab size dogs maybe a red fox size foot but nothing larger

my dad raised labs
there are blocky types, and fine boned types. Their foot size is relative
but hey- you can't catch dogs in push pull enclosed traps, so set w/o worry

there maybe blocky types and fine boned types but an elephant is still the size of an elephant.

there maybe blocky types and fine boned types but an elephant is still the size of an elephant. x2 I don't believe a dog with the exception of poodles and a few other toy dogs could get caught in the DPs I've seen.I don't care for posts insinuated dps catch dogs. There was one on another site about dogs getting caught by the tongue. It puts doubt in people's minds about them being safe all because of a one in a million deal.Which are close to the odds of it happenong. Look at the thousands and thousands dps set this year across the country and I have not heard of one creditable case of a dog being caught.

first of all- the guy didn't tell me if it was a pup, or what- and those that talk about feet being the same on a small boned type lab as a big blocky lab (comparing elephants), haven't been around many if any labs.
the PULL trigger was, IMHO, as close to true dog proof- can one say the same about a push pull?
so no dog has ever been caught in a "dogproof"?
I'll have to tell those telling me that, they are liars. what agends they could have, considering the ones that told me the above trap a LOT of coon in dps and love them. but when they say "I love them, but they aren't dog proof", and tell me why, does that make them, or me, liars?
and how many possums or cats are you catching in push pulls?
I think calling push pulls specie specific or dog proof, are doing an injustice to true dog proofs.

I have been around plenty of bird labs and while not all labs are the same size or bone structure I can tell you I have never seen a lab with feet small enough to make it down a sq tube 1.2" across and get down to 2.25" deep with that foot in a Dagger so far any how..............
Even most lab puppy's ones that can walk and explore have feet that would be a very, very rare deal at best. People look at the majority of labs and say OH my what big feet for such a small dog. We aren't talking toy poodles, or yorkie's here we are talking labs and the odds ofone setting off a push/pull triggered coon dagger trap with an opening less than 1.25". The odds? I would say very remote, while not 100% darn close to it.
I'm not calling anyone a lair I would like the speciefics of the dog in question and how it come to get caught in a DP in the first place and also the brand would be nice.
They are dog proof no where does any manufacture state they are cat, skunk or possum proof.
They are pretty species specific meaning few other species will get caught in them, the highest majority will be coons. If I set a foot trap I could catch alot of species in it, not so with the coon daggers reguardless of push/pull.
They have a small opening and offer efficantcy keeping non targets very low, how low? Lower than most standard used foot holds for sure. I wouldn;t loose any sleep over catching the free roaming farm dog in one, I would worry more with a 1.5 sized foothold.
Good enough for me. I set daggers for coons and foot holds for canines and bobcats.

I know 3 guys that caught dogs in DPs with push/pull triggers and they ranged from small yappy dog to blood hound. Blood hound fired the trap and was caught by it's tongue. After a short struggle the dog pulled free of the trap leaving most of it's tongue in the trap and bled out within a very short time right in front of the trapper and landowner. NOT GOOD!

Well I will let you all know if I ever have an issue with a dog in a coon dagger. I can tell you I have in foot traps. Again no one said 100% but I like the odds around dogs and coon daggers versus dogs and footholds.
I wonder how many DP's sold each year and set and dog issues? % wise? Betting very low, very low. I won;t stop using a push/pull trigger type trap for coons and for many to downplay there value is doing a disservice IMO.

If the bloodhound was with trapper and landowner when it was caught. Why didn't they release it before it pulled off its tongue? It's not like the dog could bite them and they needed a snare pole. Seems odd.

I have or see no proof so I stand behind my opinion. Anything is possible including me dating a Victoria Secret model. lol But there is a point were I believe chances are so low you don't consider it . Now if facts come in that make me reconsider the dp factor I of course would..

Yep lots of "poppy cock" for sure! I tried to take 2 fingers and push down inside of a dagger to see if I could reach the trigger to set it off, I could only get to my nuckle and NO further my fingers are avg to a little above avg but if I can't get 2 fingers down far enough to snap it off, that dog better have a narrow foot to get down to that trigger. My two fingers measure a shade over 1.6" to the knuckle. How many dogs have a foot measuring 1.6" across? Not to many running around the country side in my area.
