I don't think there is much held over as the clearances on the Feb sale were 100% or close to it. Maybe some coon and or dealer protected goods. However I'm told the numbers shown are fresh goods.

This coming month will absolutely tell us the strength and depth of the market.
I was talking with Bob W about it the other day that I think that other than coon the market this year is the best its been since the boom.

600,000 fresh coon and some think the coon harvest was not a record of coon for the past many years??? Something ain't right if these are all fresh coon hey?
140,000 fresh beaver? I know the castor market drove it some but this much???
That is 80,000 more coon than last years sale, 40,000 more beaver and 250,000 more rats!
21,000 more coyotes as well.

Doesn't really matter where these coon came from it's the reality. May always seems to have poorer quality fur and somewhat lower averages so it will be interesting. The biggest thing may be continued resistance to paying premium money for the top of the line select coon.I have no idea about harvest size and historic averages. It might be difficult to get hard facts on the actual yearly numbers.I would expect a lot of lower grade ,springy coon harvested because of the lack of winter.Might be next February before a guy wants to sell next falls coon catch.

my numbers are based off of sale info from last May to this May on Nafa's sight. All labeled fresh goods.
I find the rat numbers interesting as a few guys I talked with about spring rat trapping, in SD the water was lower so the rat take wasn't what it could have been with more water.

Randy, I'd wager alot of those beaver came out of freezers, whether dealer or trappers, from years past.
Also MN and other norther tier state had an early ice out. A lot of spring beaver on this sale that never would have saw it.
I think the beaver will rise from february nafa levels. Maybe wishful thinking on my part.
Rat harvest was huge this winter randy with the unseasonably warm weather and no snow.

That is less beaver than the February 1986 or maybe it was 87 where there were 90,000 eastern alone. If I recall correctly the western numbers were over 70,000 on that same sale.

No chatter about the sale in Kopenhagen this weekend?
From their website there were approx. :
31k north american raccoons 10k muskrats 5k north american red fox
offered.
the fox avgd $40 Are those north american ranch or wild red fox? I would assume wild.
No mention of what the coons, or rats did.
I would assume if they are not listed in the results, they didn't sell.
Anyone know anything for real about this sale?

If they came from freezers how can they be labeled "fresh": goods LOL.
It will be interesting to see what the rats do this time around.....

With 600,000 coon, weather their fresh or stale It doesn't look good for the coon market for next year. Will be lots of buy backs on this May sale. Lots of carry over will not be good. Next years prime northern heavies will still sell well but I bet at lower prices.

Well it sure does matter as to how long these coons have been sitting on the back burner and where these coons hidden for a reason? I sure would like to know where this influx came from!!!!

TC39, Do you not know anything about the fur industry?
Who do you think these coons were "hidden" from?? Do you want all of the trappers and furbuyers to report to you annually on what we have in storage?
We had one of the mildest winters on record with more trappers in the field than we have seen since 98. You also have dealers (and trappers)that have been setting on large quantites of fur waiting on a profitable market to develop. Just look at the volume of beaver that some of the Missouri fur buyers have accumulated over the last couple of years waiting on a market!

Randy, up until february i hadnt sold a beaver for 3 years and some were 4 years old.
They were sold as "fresh" goods. No way you would have been able to tell the difference unless I told you.
With the mild winter the coon and rat catch was huge

The market will survive all these coon if fur is back like it appears.Frankly it's probably a buying opportunity for those with the funds. As long as ranch mink bring a hundred bucks I think our wild fur will be fine. Not a get rich quick deal unless you got lots of rats but a decent wage if you work hard , compared to the last decade or two on wild fur. Still in realty it's us hard cores who are dumb enough to trap hard.

Robert yep I know some about the fur market and it does matter if and where these coons where stored sir really it does!!!! You can't call coons 3-4 years old fresh goods they are hold overs from seasons past and by hiding such this can influance the market no doubt about it!!!! Where were these coons the past few auctions? What is the reason for them comming out now?
Robert I understand we had a large harvest and have said such though many disagree and state the coon harvest was not substanialy higher, the fact remains are these fresh goods or holdovers from cold storage? To me it impacts the market what if these numbers where 1 million coons all called fresh goods? You don't think that would have an impact on the overall avg paid out?
Steven I agree I'm sure many of your critters looked "day" fresh I still wouldn't classify them as "fresh" goods from just a marketing stand point due to the fact market manipulation can occur.
I feel this number of so called fresh coons will bring that market down for next season, we have heard in the past of really high selling % on most fur and now all these coons get dumped into the pipeline? If this was all fall/winter 11/12 fur so be it and the market will ebb and flow with supply and demand, if not I think some games might be being played as well.
Robert continue on..................
