I like gamey deer meat for a change up. But for over all catching I run commercial bait only or with lure. My catch like Steve's it is way higher on commercial bait.

Are the gophers harder to catch when air temp is cold? I have them plug more holes when air temp is cold over warm weather.

I use to use the walnut and sumac tops. It looked ok but not a very durable coating. I got some traps with 5-6 coyotes coating still hanging tuff. I got one I left coated in mud want to see the out come. The real stuff is hard to come by I had to order hundred fifty pounds to get the price even reasonable. Now since everyone has used it I get 200 lbs a year . The freight shipment is the killer.

I dipped mine one time in the gas junk years ago. The coyotes had a hay day digging traps out. I just use my real logwood crystal and go quite waxing just a good long simmer and done. I just pulled up some traps I thought I would get back to sat snapped for about 3 months had some little spots of rust trying to start. Good enough for me.

I give out thank you cards that has a picture of a pile of coyotes or beaver. Most of my farmers don't like anything that digs a hole or eats their crops get rid of it. I trap for about 100 farmers got rid of some not so good places this last year. Some farmers I get permission by e-mail they are so far away. Already scouted out a brand new line for this year with some permission already.

I run them 2 coiled for about 3 yrs. And now starting to 4 coil them with a JC Conners regular helper spring. If you you use the no. 3 the spring will fit just fine over the factory spring pins but the 4 will work but not much extra clearance.. I am talking the Vic. Montgomery 3-4 size trap. The factory 4 coiled version has weaker spring than the standard 2 coil. I caught about 30 coyotes with the set up and all springs stayed on fine.We will find out this year with more catches to see how they work. Marty

I can't get a good pic. of the notch. Red on the brown site puts the same style notch to his trap he made a pic. of it. It is right at the transition of the slope to the factory notch.

None what so ever. I run about 4 lbs. pan tension. I run a different cut in the dog with a 3 point file. Make pan drop to below the jaw.It is flawless. If they touch the jaw edge they are going home with me. All good catches many double leg even on cats. I had a customer order 10 full sheets from me yesterday runs Montgomery square jaws 3's. A no. 2 size trap is the smallest I would use it on. Ran it on 550 in Ga. it worked but hard to work the pan I would not recommend on that trap. Ran some on Bridger dog on traps works super as well. I was told Vic. was going to start making the 4 again in June some time this year.

I myself see no reason to use a limp screen for a pan cover. I was shown to use screen to increase your kill area. I had some Montana's and ran O gorman screen got snapped way to many times for me. I do know I welded a heavy S hook off the d ring and have 3 links of chain before the first swivel. Makes bedding nice especially in frozen ground. I am all Vic. Montgomery 4 pan sets lower than jaw and is fast. I take mine to the car wash hit it with engine cleaner then rinse off.

If I used a natural bait it would be deer . Beaver meat here has very little drawing power at any time of year.

A piece of beaver meat here has no effect on coyotes . I have a friend that put out pile of beaver in CRP ground they were kind of rank when thrown out . He set snares in and as of yet no hits on it. The deer rib cages yes but the beaver except hawk and crows nothing.

I made a new lure about 3 yrs ago it is called 8 ball. This year in the snow if they can get over your set,The coyote will pull the lure stick scratch at it the roll all over it the run a ways the do it all over again. They can not quit playing with it.Even had a coyote in a trap level out the ground and now what I have seen in the snow he was rolling and playing with it.Then go back and try to get some more. The snow sure tells good stories and a pain in the butt. The snow came after rain and it has not blown clear but just blows enough to make you take a broom and sweep it every other check. I am a firm believer 2 lure at every set be it bait and lure or 2 lure together like at a bone or flat set.And I am very heavy handed with lure or bait. Had a neat snow deal the coyote you can see his tracks cut the wind of the set stop him he mills around and goes straight in and their he sits.
