had a head gasket, or related go out hte last 3 days of coyotes, so needed a new truck for the upcoming season. I knew I didn't really need a truck until gophers so bided my time. A friend heard I needed one, so sold me a 2001 GMC extended cab, 4 wheel, auto. It needed brakes, fan motor, window motor, and new tailgate latch. All new brake lines, new rotors and pads up front, new window motor, new door handle, used fan and latch. $500 dollar truck, $600 on repairs= rockers rusted, some rust over rear wheels, but all and all... I'm thniking no worse than my Ranger for gas...and man oh man is the room nice to have again.

Thats the beauty of living rural, and having a network- you can still find good deals.

I didn't think you worked out that hard last fall. LOL Nice truck, seems like a heck of a good deal. It is nice to have buddies that'll look out for you a little bit. My plow truck puked. Every time we get snow, there's at least 2 different guys plowing or snow blowing my driveway before I get home from work. Sure does make you appreciate good people.

That was very inexpensive for all those repairs.
Now you are going to have to get used to finding what you are looking for in "the pile" that will be the back seat. If you actually remove the seats, you can make an even bigger "pile."
You will miss the Ranger for its ability to go anywhere and get back out. Buy a bumper jack!

we were supposed to get a big snow, but it must have rained during, we only got a couple of inches- had 4 thursday- in upper 30s all week-not much snow cover so it could be early spring.
Buddy passed on, our new guy is Mickey- and he loves the room. Its as nice a driving truck as I've had, hope the gopher fields don't beat it up too much. If I can avoid the badger holes!!!
I've got a nice toolbox for the back- last couple of vehicles too small to use it- so will be good having everything stored nice- yes, I carry bumper jack, floor jack, chains, come-a-long, tow rope, jumper cables plus basic tools-

Steve I had a brand new (in 97) Ford Ranger with the 5.0. Thought I would get killer gas mileage, boy was I wrong. Maybe 14-16 hwy, 11-12 trapping. Powerful truck, but tiny bed. Had to put it down it had low miles but rusted out. I went used full size and never looked back. I get extended cab and still have twice the bed area ( or so it seems) and get the same mileage or BETTER w/ fullsize.

yes, the Ranger disappointed me insofar as gas mileage. If I really babyed it, going 55 mph for a long continuous distance- I could get it close to 20- but that was perfect conditions. But day in day out, esp when gopher trapping or 4x4 was involved, it was horrible. My last Silverado gave me 17-18 pretty consistently- I'm hoping this is in same range.
Yes- looking in bed of truck its like....all the room in the world.

Rangers suck on gas but they excel going through rough stuff. I have a tacoma now. It might suck as bad as the ranger - but it has got more room and gadgets to suck in! Haven't gotten it stuck yet but have missed the locked differential on my standard ranger many a time. It's a pain to turn that 4x4 dial.
Lots of snow here but it is crusting up. Went ice fishing for a few days and there was 3 feet of ice. Auger barely reached water and the ice is deeper than my arm is long. Don't ask how I know but it has to do with things falling through holes.
Crows have been back for 2 weeks. That is early.

so much for bare ground! got 6 inches yesterday, but warming up to 40 this weekend. Average high is 37 so we have been above that last week, not today though. This truck has push button- seems to work good on snowy roads- It does have 4 wheel auto, which I've never had- might try it in gopher fields- don't need it much, but every once in a while.
Saw my first 2 robins last saturday
