I also know folks that work in the coal business, and I agree it's much different today than it was years ago. I know a woman that worked underground, good looking lady too! The mine where she worked, it's closed now.
It's not just losing the coal jobs, but nearly everything in those communities, it's all tied together. From the schools, local government, right on down to the local stores, small businesses, everything.
WV does have a lot to offer, we live on a beautiful piece of real estate. Low crime rate, and lots of honest hard working folks. I guess, if you get right down to it, that's why there is a West Virginia and an east Virginia.

"People that don't want their children to leave the state to find a job ...."
No other jobs have black lung disease, such high rates of cancer deaths and babies born with deformities. I would rather have my daughters and their families live in another state or country even than work in coal mines. I can't imagine anyone who spent his or her life in a mine wouldn't feel the same. The pay may be good, but the overall cost in health and quality of life in the end is way too high.

I googled "which jobs cause the most cancer" and I read the first one. time.com/11661/the-5-jobs-most-likely-to-make-you-sick/I figure Time is reputable enough. Coal doesn't even make the top five. I don't know even if it is in the top ten. Quality of life means different things to different people. To some it means having a good job that enables you to raise a family, educate them, and give them physical comforts. Hopefully doing so while surrounded by extended family. It's always easier to tell the other guy that they are going to lose their job and that it is for their own good.

Pam all depends on who funded or posted the above quote. Granted there is health problems in any work place. Now days one has to question what is posted on line or even in print. Not belittling problemns coal miners have. Many millionaires made their fortune on the bodys of coal miners in the past.

'http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2011/11/states-federal-taxes-spending-charts-maps Here is another way to look at federal subsidies as this compares the amount of dollars received in revenue compared to the revenue paid in federal taxes. Note that most states that vote for less government are the ones that receive the most. here is another site that puts the amount per capita that comes from federal revenues. money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/state_expend/percapita.htmlBryce

Pam, I'm going to write off both of those links, as BS. In the first link, in the very first sentence: "But some say..." That's not convincing to me! The second link, sounds like a preacher trying to preach his thoughs. That doesn't impress me! I read both links, and the comments after. You know, miners are just like a lot of other folks, they have their toys, boats, Harley's, 4-wheelers, fancy cars, etc. But if you get right down to it, if a man wants to save up his money and buy a Corvette for his daughter's 16th birthday, that's not any of my business! That's his business! Friends of mine invited me to their family reunion last summer, down in "coal country", they always have a little car show. They had them lined up, pretty nice display! Here's one.

TP, we're here to make a clean swipe in DC!
We should get some good jokes from it. lol
I'm not familiar with Mr. Spence, but it seems he's done some very good things for his home state! Trump will win!

here is the thing:
Trump calls women pigs, slobs, says they look good on their knees, bleeding from all parts of her body for asking Donald a question, etc
Trump calls a war hero like McCain- a loser for "getting captured" and he didn't like him, because Donald prefers winners
Trump is a racist. I could quote a book on his own words on this
Trump mocks handicapped people.
now- all of this makes me despise the man- and if he ever said those things to a woman in my presence in real life- I'd knock him to the ground
but if none of that matters-
Trump wants S Korea, Japan to get nukes
wants to ban Muslims
wants to build a wall, even though its been a NET LOSS with Mexico on immigration for several years (Obama doing a pretty good job)
thinks American workers are getting paid too much
Wants American jobs- but has been involved in over 3,5000 lawsuits, most because he refused to pay workers for what they had done (I negotiate down after the work- his own words). Or "always order monogrammed, that way you can negotiate a lower price after its done"- again, his own words.
business? 4 bankruptcys- and most of his products are made overseas.
------------------
I know some coal miners- their dream is that their kids, don't have to work in the mines.

I'm sure Trump has said some ignorant stuff. So has Hillary!
Think about these quotes: "Landing under sniper fire", "What difference does it make?"
It makes a lot of difference!
It's bad enough when you lie to Congress, and then you lie to the FBI, time and again! But when you lie to me, the American public, you no longer have my respect!
The way the Clinton's have treated the military on their trips, on Air Force One, Marine One, there is no excuse! It's shameful!
As much as you despise Trump, I despise H. Clinton and her cronies more! We need change, and nobody can buy Donald Trump!

if you want to use quotes- then use the entirety- which btw, I'll be glad to do with Trump
"what difference does it makes" was in direct response to WHAT caused it- and I'll say it- what difference does it make if it was a video or not? same result, should be same solutions- but hey, lets spend 7 MILLION on a witch hunt that was started, and ran, for one purpose- a purpose stated by the chairman of the panel, and others on it- to (and direct quote btw)"to bring Clintons poll numbers down". Clintons remarks were NOT about the deaths, and you imply, and the GOP says directly
lie to the FBI? where? the director said 100% she DID NOT
nobody can buy Trump? lol hes bought and paid for by the RNC- pretty apparent
Hillary has done wrong- but I could introduce her to my wife, sister or daughter

I'll give anyone a fair shake. Hillary has had her chance, and she failed!
I don't think anyone in their right mind, could say that our country is headed in the right direction.
As you said, Hillary has done wrong. It's time to give someone else a chance.
I agree Trump has been very loud during the Primary season, but I also think when it's time for him to get down to business, he will.

From the few moments I have watched the convention is about Trump and what he says and what he did, that does not leave much opportunity for the RNC to lay down a platform, relate their principles etc. If you want to lay all your political principles on one person that has a history of finding away to always come out on top even at the expense of others or taxpayers than Trump is probably your man.

My opinion, over the coming days, weeks and months, the RNC will lay out their platform, and offer solutions to our problems. If you get right down to it, folks are tired of the "system." We want change! We're tired of the same old crap outta DC.
Speaking for myself and a lot of other Democrats, we're just tired of of the Clinton's!
Trump and Pence will be good for the country.

the platform is out- its very conservative- being called most in history- that will not win them votes, and frankly its not ap latform I support. I'm a fiscal conservative, but more importantly a social liberal and I truly believe, the deck is stacked agasint the common man, and TRump is part of that culture. over 3,500 lawsuits against him, most for not paying suppliers and workers for work he gets done- his advice- his words- "always get things monogrammed- that way you can pay far less on delivery, because they can't take them back" nypost.com/2016/07/18/gop-adopts-most-conservative-platform-ever/the list of small businesses he has bankrupted with this practice, is long indeed- and left investors and tradesmen, employees holding the bag in FOUR bankruptcies of his own in his infamous business life. I don't care who the other is- its not the Donald for me

Well we had 8 years of change and people are upset. We had a first minority president and one with less political experience then almost any other than Ike. The issue is not change it is they did not get the change "they wanted". Now there is a demand that there will be change and I don't believe it will be if Trump wins. The executive branch may have real organizational issues in how to govern and who will take charge if they are given a chance to. The speech the other night by WI house leader Ryan was a talk on what he will do if we have a GOP president, not about what a GOP president will do and Ryan's idea of what to do has been on the agenda since Ginrich and look where we are with that. The fact that a female candidate that is the most hated candidate by many ever and from a family with baggage etc. is even leading this at this stage speaks more about what the nation does not like about the GOP then what they do not like about centrist and democratic principles. Trump may be able to win just because Hilary has a lot of issues they can exploit but if he does and he runs the WH like he does a campaign there will be issues and fast and the house will wind up having some real issues trying to pass some of the prohibitive bills that they and the WH may want passed. The religious bans, the wall etc. are very high risk issues for the GOP and they are still major campaign drives for Trump. If the GOP can't get it done in the next election cycle or two the demographics will be way further away from them then even today. By 2024 another 10 million conservative white male voters will be dead and another 12-20 million young voters will be eligible to vote. We saw what Sanders was able to do with that age group and they can readily see how the deck has been stacked against them and the GOP is so much further away from their ideals that stopping at the center will be their new home unless there are huge changes and soon.

The RNC Convention is just a circus being run by amateurs. That is exactly how Trump with his big ego would try and run the country. If the doom and gloom republicans think the US is in terrible shape now, I can only imagine what would happen if Trump actually got elected. And, I shudder to think if something happened to Trump and Pence would take over.
WTG Cruz! seriously, didn't anyone think to ask him if he was going to endorse Trump? Why would they let him speak, did they really believe he'd play nice when Trump insulted not only his wife but implied his father was involved in Kennedy's assassination?
We need a President who has a full grasp of foreign affairs, and understands how things get done in Washington, and IMHO that choice is Hillary. The last time our economy was really good, and people were actually earning interest on their savings was when Bill was President. If the Dems can get control of the Senate back, I think the economy would start to flourish again.
Cheers, Pam

This entire election is a circus. The media coverage of it is one of the reasons why. They are the ringmasters.
Pam wrote "If the doom and gloom republicans think the US is in terrible shape now, I can only imagine what would happen if Trump actually got elected."
You are not alone in that. I believe that the spectrum of what people think the U.S. will be like under Trump is HUGE. And they are probably mostly wrong. Trump brings a lot of uncertainty with him.
Pam wrote: "We need a President who has a full grasp of foreign affairs, and understands how things get done in Washington, and IMHO that choice is Hillary.
And that is why so many are going to vote for Trump. People are fed up of how things get done in Washington. They disagree with Washington's grasp of foreign affairs.
I agree that you need a president with a full grasp .... of what the American people want and of what they are tired of. Unfortunately, you only have the choice between two people and neither seem to be the one for the job.

Trump stated he didn't need to listen to generals and advisors on foreign affairs, because he didn't need to, cause his brain was so huge
He stated nothing wrong with S Korea and Japan having nukes
and that he would never rule out using nukes in Europe
-----------------
that's the sum total of his foreign affairs policys
-------------------
time for the rest of the world to match the money and men we have committed to fight terror- time for us to stop being the ONLY policeman in the world.
