points can be made without resorting to name calling- I prefer to delete such comments, rather than responding to them.
my bias? excuse me while I stop laughing- I always laugh at things like that, because I've learned its only bias when someone is in disagreement- and those shouting "bias" never see the same in themselves.
TC- you need to learn how to read and make logical connections- my bias isn't toward heros, or towards the army or towards movies- typical TC red herring misdirection- my bias is towards someone who, in a court of law, was recognised as a liar.
Oh wait- like cops, everyone that served in the military is perfect and without fault. and courts of law are important only if they follow your views, otherwie, they are wrong too. Good God, I hope I never have such a distorted view of the world!
TC takes a statement about I don't like liars so wouldn't want to see a movie celebrating his life, and makes it that I don't appreciate the troops.
and lets not forget, TC was leading the charge agaisnt Kerry, stating his 2 purple hearts wre bogus, blah blah blah. Consistent in inconsistentcy.
and you are shocked, that 2 people living in the same state have different views- doesn't take much to shock you I see.
If you need to live vicariously through movies, thats your choice, not mine.

There seems that there is a bias against many movies by persons such as yourselves due to in your opinion they are too liberal, socialist or leftist. I guess I personally don't understand the reasoning that everyone who would be a moderate, independent, centrist or even liberal in politics did not or would not take the oath to protect our constitution and enlist or be drafted etc. Of the roughly 25 million veterans in this nation I would bet a reasonable number of them don't vote for the limited and narrow views of patriotism that many dictate to us we are to believe. Too hate those that don't follow your beliefs or hate other nations because they don't follow everyone of our directives or beliefs to me does mean that those that you don't like are the non heroes and those that do are the heroes. Heroes or and non heroes can and do come in many forms. As much as many don't like the Hollywood Movie culture and how they may or may not support our individual wishes we need to be grateful that they have the production system to produce movies and do let directors and producers have considerable freedom to produce with limited if any control on the nature of the content of the art being produced.

American sniper IS nominated for Best Picture, Bradley Cooper for Best Actor and also in 4 other categories.
There are 8 movies nominated for Best Picture and only 5 of them have their Director's nominated. So is there prejudice against all of the 3 not nominated? Happens every year.
Having seen all but 1 of the movies (missed Birdman), IMHO The Theory of Everything was the best all around and I hope it wins in all categories it was nominated in.

Tman I have a bias for anyone who has served this country and Did it well. Those who fought for and defended our country and freedoms through our history is why we can debate and talk via the Internet openly and freely, so yes I have a BIAS for those who protect and serve this country on a daily basis. Not all are great but the majority are IMO.
I live through movies? LOL. I go to a movie theater on avg 2 times per year. I watch zero reality TV because frankly it is not reality at all but hyped up stuff. I,read non fiction for the most part.
Tman I would agree with you 100 percent if the case where even close to being seen as open and shut not so, I have read on the subject and feel what Ventura did was nothing but a money grab IMO of course. This is a case of he said, he said that really never got to be resolved by one key person who could and would have taken the stand if he where alive today. I do not know if his wife will get a new trial or not, yet if Crhis Kyle never had a single person testify to the fact of something taking place this would be open and shut , yet the defense had multiple witnessess testify under oath that an exchange did take place between the two. Both military and private citizens there that day.
So the jury found in Venturas favor so be it. They both disliked each other Kyle for Venturas remarks and Jessie for Kyle being glorified as a sniper and hero.
Kerry IMO and many others left the very people who served along side of him in the cold with his words on return from the war. Many where and are very angered with him over such just a fact.
Bryce you keep using the word hate? I can disagree with others views without hating on people.
Hollywood looks for anything that can make them a pile of money, so there are films done that don't fit their mind set but a few 100 million well they are more than happy to see them produced. What I dislike are those who have never served in Hollywood that come out and call a dead ex military, cowards and think this movie is like nazi propaganda. This movie is anything but pro war it is about the life and the effects war had on a very well known sniper. A look into that life and the struggles he and others face on a daily basis. If anything it will help to raise awarness for veterans now and going forward.

The fact that he was shot by a known mentally ill veteran will probably raise the awareness as much or not more. If not it should. We don't know what happened there but someone not mentally stable or with PSTD should probably not been at a shooting range firing weapons or hearing the sound of fire etc. as that may well have triggered very negative events. I use the term "hate" in the case of referencing your posts as to me you don't state disagreement with those you don't feel credible you spend a lot of text and time talking about how un American or worthless they are. Too me I read more than difference in those words. Bryce

"Hollywood looks for anything that can make them a pile of money..."
And so do some retired soldiers. The only reason Kyle is so well known now is that he chose to write a book. It's too bad he also chose to besmirch another ex-soldier's reputation as well.
Cheers, Pam

Pam, you think Chris Kyle he was in any shape to get a 9/5 job after 4 tours as a sniper? For that matter some of the others?
He chose to write a book, a book many read in fact, he was open and candid to millions of people.
What happened between him and Jesse who was never named in the book, but later talked about is well still uncertain to this day.
yet he died trying to help other ex military and helped more prior to his death............

You know we had guys do 3 1 year plus tours in Nam and those soldiers were expected to find normal jobs and live within our traditional society. I don't know why we think today that those who have experienced several tours should or would not work to adjust to normal society life or find the means and support to do so. One of the things that many don't know or remember is that the way we were deployed in our frontline deployments one was in a combat or war or active zone 24/7 until you were out of there. Some were in these type of deployments their whole tour. I was not my stints into the frontline or beyond the front line were typically brief and not continuous. There were thousands of troops during the war that took incoming every day they were on the ground.

Bryce how many Vietnam vets have had troubles since then adjusting to "normal lives and jobs"?
1/4 homeless are veterans. 47 percent of those are from the Vietnam war. Would you call that adjusting well after 40 some years?
Let's not compare who had it worse please. Anyone in a combat situation is subject to many of the same things.

yes thank you- the jury decided- so be it
very interesting though that an opinion that I don't like 1 particular guy, has morphed into name calling by one, and a charge of being anti military by another

If you compare the abuse, divorce, suicide, drug and alcohol issues with the Nam Vets as to the current military service the current ones have higher rates of all. I can see the divorce issue more now with more servicemen being longer duty and older as the average age of the Viet Nam vet who dies was 19-20 years old. Sure 1/4 of the homeless are Nam Vets. Most charitable and other housing organizations don't allow single adult males but take in families, women with children and battered women etc. and for good reason. That leaves many Vets who are single adults on the streets. I have talked with several of my Nam VFW members and we talked about coming home to the crap we got and how that was disappointing and disgusting but after spending 40 years working on getting past all that many of us feel we got a better deal then the men and women get today. We were told we were scum and killers etc. etc. and we knew we needed to get past that or live like some choose to do yet today. Today's vets come home to hero welcomes, parades, full dress uniforms etc. etc. and then are forgotten about and have more issues with keeping their homes, jobs they left etc. etc. The Hollywood treatment and then left to your own to me is worse than being told to figure it out on your own you bum.

"Pam, you think Chris Kyle he was in any shape to get a 9/5 job after 4 tours as a sniper?"
Of course not, plus he really didn't have any job to go back to. Nor do I think he was probably in any mental shape to be trying to help other PTSD vets without solving his own problems first. His wife said he was suffering from PTSD. Kyle said many times he had no regrets, but IMO it's not entirely normal to be in combat and really not have any sort of regrets or guilt feelings about it. Obviously I have no experience but Bryce would certainly know if I'm wrong.
I wonder if his marriage would have survived long term. He did say he quit because she threatened to leave him if he didn't. If he hadn't married he would have made it his career. That mentality had to be hard on his family too. Oh well, no use speculating.
I think because of the draft there were boys that had problems before they went to Viet Nam and they just never got over them with or without help. All the chemicals involved were different than in recent times. In the current battles they volunteered after 9-11 being gung ho but naïve as to what they were really getting into. We are all raised that killing another human is wrong and then are sent out to kill. I can't imagine the fear lived with every day in war and the adjustment it takes to try and live a normal life again. There's an adjustment period even if guys served in non-combat service.

Pam hindsight is always 20/20. I wonder if some of his helping others in fact was helping himself? Hum?
again all of the rest is the sacrifice these people make for country and service! I applaud them for doing such.

American sniper tops 300 million mark and is now the highest box office war Movie of all time.

That is good but I find it really interesting that we compare directly the numbers at todays movie cost rates and 315 million people to movies that were made when tickets were half that cost with 140 million fewer people. Ditto on million selling albums etc. I bet a movie made 30 years ago that grossed 180 million netted more profit than 300 Million did this year.

Just as I predicted American sniper up for six Oscars and only wins with sound editing wow talk about throwing a bone Hollywood elite was never going to allow a real depiction of war to win much at all from the onset too bad great movie Clint Eastwood is been around the business long enough to know his odds were going to be small but I commend him for making the movie

Noting against American Sniper as I saw the movie but there were some very good movie productions this year and were well deserving and the voters chose what they felt was a good story well told and acted. For those that feel that the movie industry would cater totally to the minority view and or liberal politics the fact that Selma won only for a very great song indicates that performance and putting together a meaningful story that is well done does count for something. So you are saying Platoon was a very poor war movie then?

No platoon was a good movie as well. Bird man not my thing or grand Budapest motel. Funny thing birdman is one of the lowest grossing Oscar winner of all time? I guess most people missed something then hey? Also the grand Budapest hotel made less than 60 million in the US as well. The winner for best picture theory of everything grossed 34 million in the US again millions of people missed the best movie of the year I guess? Do I think American sniper was snubbed? heck yea so do millions of others. I guess the people who pay to see movies do not know anyhting of what a good movie is or how they are made? I hardly ever watch the oscars because it is the Hollywood elite telling us how smart they are, how artistic they are and how deep their lives are Rubish and many are so removed from real life not even funny, I watched this time just to see how they would treat the movie of the year which I have little doubts American sniper box office and blue ray and DVD sales will push this well over 1/2 billion when all said and done. I got the inside jokes aimed at the movie , but Hollywood is so far removed from normal people's lives that the inate walk away with the hardware. Movies the majority could careless about seemed to get the most awards and groups like rotten tomatoes and others give them such high praise but lower scores for things like American sniper as well.

I actually feel that movies that don't create lots of revenue but are viewed highly by the academy as well produced, acted and told an appropriate story whatever their message shows that the Academy can make choices based on artistic value as well as revenue value. That to me gives the academy more credibility as an institution when it cmes to "grading" themselves as to performance by their members. There have been several picture of the year winners who did not gross much money. That is probably one reason the movie producers are making a ton of high action films or those with lots of technology etc. They get good audience and with fewer high paid actors and actresses they can profit more as well. The fact that American Sniper made the top 5-7 list will probably give it another couple 100 million in sales so being in the running does matter.
