Asked at work today about withdrawal times and was told vaccines such as vision 7, ibr etc are out by 28 days as is ivomec or ivermectin depending on brand name. Other medicines varied from a week to near the twenty day mark. Told the boss we were having a disscussion and it was brought up that coyotes won't eat recently doctored cattle or cattle with medicine in them and didn't even get through telling him the story before he said Bullsh!t LOL.

the oxytetracycins have around 28 day withdrawals for human consumption, most all the really good cattle drugs have a 30 day withdrawal. unless it is excennell.
I have had coyotes eat the arse off of a calving heifer before, they seem to like the back end first. Fisher cats on the other hand eat the belly first and the insides.

Once again we have differences in coyote behavior which change from area to area which is why sage coyote trappers think before they say "never" and "always".
If you want to recognize the voice of coyote trapping experience, it usually answers a question involving coyote behavior with........
"Well, that depends...."

Do you think them eating or not eating doctored cattle can go back through their genes and places where alot of 1080 was used maybe they wont eat them etc?

2 words in trapping that should be used with extreme caution- "Never" - "Always"
If I had a quarter everytime those 2 words came back and bit me in the ass----I'd have a huge pile of quarters,LOL.

Jeff: "Do you think them eating or not eating doctored cattle can go back through their genes and places where alot of 1080 was used maybe they wont eat them etc?"
No! 1080 was very effective to the point that the only coyotes it wouldn't kill was a handful of "non carrion" eaters which is not genetic but simply by chance. Perhaps a bad experience with some other toxicant. A "conditioned response".
If coyotes are not eating doctored cattle in some areas it has to be another reason.
If I was to speculate, I would bet that the reason your coyotes are eating treated animals is because they have become so accustomed to eating dead animals in the feedlot that the smell or taste of antibiotics doesn't really bother them anymore considering all the other odors also associated with a feedlot. That seems logical.
In contrast, in a place where coyotes would seldom find a dead cow, they would be more reluctant to feed on a cow that was doctored due to the strange and foreign odor. That too seems logical.
Once again, it goes right back to understanding the behavior differences from coyote to coyote, area to area, and season to season.
One trapper sets a doctored carcass near a major feedlot in Kansas and kicks butt. The next trapper in another area sets a doctored cow and falls flat on his face wasting his time. The trapper in Kansas says it works great. The trapper in SD says the trapper in Kansas is full of sh*t. LOL! The smart trapper knows the difference between the two situations.
To be highly successful in this game, you have to understand your coyotes in your area.
