11.17 avg!!!! darn good rich, darn good. did you sell in March or May? Either way you beat the avg overall by more than 1.00 per rat not bad for wire and scanning to boot....

The difference in sizes isnt an inch or inch and a half when selling local. It's a quarter inch or half inch.
Why? Because a 15 or 15 1/4 inch rat isnt a xxl. Its 15.5.
I agree with rich when it comes to the wood v wire debate. I think that wood in the end is a better product but aint making me enough moola to dic with.
How about it rich? Clothes pins a must? I use them and wouldnt do it any other way. TC i averaged 11 bucks on my nafa rats last year and I say they were half wood half wire.

BTW most wood stretchers are junk.'
too wide in the shoulder and too blocky.
Rdfx has a buddy that makes some nice ones and I picked up 3 or so dozen from Red last year at the NTA.

49 what are the dimensions of those good wood ones?
also do you feel your avg would have moved .50 or more if all done on wood?
When did you sell for that avg 49 March or May? If you and Rich sold those in May then you did far better than the overall NAFA avg.
Maybe one needs to build rat stretchers like Krause showed his hybred cat ones 3/4 wood and the top was wire gave you length and also gave a better top form on a cat with the wire.

I had a $10.00 average at the NAFA March sale I bet no one else had that kind of average. I have sent out my rat patterns to a bunch of trappers. They are a bit narrower In the shoulders then most wire or wood forms. They work for me.
I beat country averages every year and It's wood that does It for me.
And for the few seconds longer It takes to board a rat It's no big deal.

Ray Teske is Rdfx buddy and the guy who makes these and all of my wood are from him. Beav; Do you know if your pattern is similar since I know you know Rdfx very well?

Randy, it was in march.
I never had any rats on lasts years may sale
I wasnt gonna wait that long to get paid when I sold the last of my rats after the march sale in country for 9.25 cash.
If I had to bet I think that wood at auction on rats will do a guy maybe 50 cents more. On an 8 dollar rat who cares really. On a 4 or 5 dollar market?
Blackhammer who cares what the topic is the rat market just lived up to and beyond the fall hype. Its a mini fur boom. I know more than one guy who did 20 grand plus in rats and one buddy of mine probably in the 35 grand range.
Kelly, not to answer for Gary, but I have some of gary's patterns and some of ray's stretchers Id say pretty similar.
In the end rat stretchers are all about personal preference. As long as a guy is paying attention to his sizes he cant hardly go wrong when the market is strong.
Those newhouse type stretchers that rich likes? I gave him a dozen last fall. I cant stand em haha.

I was kidding about the topic, just because everyone gets so worked up over stretchers. On another topic however I personally could care less about the amount of money anyone makes on their rats .Other than a reference of what's possible.Who cares how much money your neighbors makes?

If my neighbor is doing the same type of work I am I care how much he make.
If my neighbor is getting six dollars a bushel for his corn and doing 150 bushel an acre and I am getting 5 dollars and 125 bushel an acre I want to find out what i am doing wrong and how can I attain that.

We sure can all learn something from other trappers line management etc.I guess I worry about my bottom line and take my friends and competions with a grain of salt for the most part.If they knock down a bunch of fur and get a good price, good for them.

That's the way I look at It. Competition has nothing to do with anything It's getting the biggest bang for your buck. Why sell a $10.00 rat for $5.00 ? It just doesn't make any sense.

does it take much longer? just curious, I always put on wire, but today we have no rats to speak of where I trap. Gary that isnt true. Unless you are unwilling to drive 60 to 80 miles. I had six lakes scouted out that were that close to you would have done me a thousand rats easy if I hadnt had enough to stay home. Still kicking myself in the azz for not hitting two of them the last ten days of february. you could be right steven, the problem is lack of vacation time and having 2 kids with my wife working makes it very hard to get that far after work or even on weekends. I guess sometimes when I speak I remember where i grew up and at that time I had enough sloughs close to trap 5,000 rats without ever driving further than 5-10 miles from my house and half that within 2-3 miles of my house. SO yes steven you are right if you are willing to travel a bit that is fine but currently, in my cirumstance I do not see it feasible with my family currently the way it is.

Steven I haved threatened running a hard rat line again, the oldest boy is 4 now another year or 2 will be perfect, I want to relive the feeling of taking 500+ in a long weekend, or even a couple hundred in a day.

Garman, I bet the little wifey part the family, would be a lot more proud of ya, with check from a vacation's worth of rats, compared to the check from a vacations worth of mange mutts (coyotes) LOL. Prolly better not ever let her see what a vacations worth of rats amounts to--or your vacations will prolly be pre-ordained by the highest power of the house in the future.
