yeah...you aren't going to catch any cats by the toes or otherwise in an exposed set without heavy guiding, you using exposed sets for cats with sterlings and jakes?

NO exsposed sets at all here. Bait and lure sets work well in the winter.

It does here as well, but if you want an extra 10-20% of those cats that just walk on by bait and lure.
And I don't care whose bait or lure, I've tried them all.
Scott Byrd told me he hardly used any lure the year they caught 360 cats.
The psychology of trapping is interesting to me, I had a hell of a time walking away from an uncovered cat set at first, now I doing the same thing with walking away from one with no lure.
My thoughts now are that one doesn't put lure next to a snare, why would he put it next to a blind set with a trap?

Bushrod we can see the tracks in the snow and we aren't letting 10%+ of the cats go by. When you trap in deeper snow that limits the avilable options for cats until you get a hard crust!!! MOst are running creek bottoms or high blown free points, with cover along the top edges.
Gang settting along travel ways and using mutliple odors at each set, if a cat can smell it why would they pass them all by? They are hunters and curious I have never bought the idea of many cats walking by sets. Sorry just don't see the evidance in such as much as some claim it to happen.
You want a good attractor try porcupine glands, hardly a cat that can resist checking out that smell. Loud beaver castor lures also another attractor, tuff for any cat that can smell it to walk on by. I have caught plenty of them in subtle coyote sets to see alot of what is out there is for selling a new technique IMO. Coyote gland lure another they like to check out for sure.
Maybe those cats in your area are different but a cat isn't the smartest critter walking around. Curiosity will do the majority of them in.
360 cats! Wow that is a pile for sure must have been in darn good cat country all blind setting.

I like the PIT clamps on longsprings, less weight.
TC, how many times have you walked up to a cat in a trap and not been able to see his tracks where he came in? I watched one walk a knife edge of bare sand in a snowed in wash once that wasn't an inch wide for 50 yards once.
If you are burying all your traps and relying on lure I'm guessing you are missing some cats. Especially when it snows.

Yep..I myself have learned alot of Scott Byrd..The last time I walked away from him..I had a real hard time with his cat savvy at the set's...So couple winter's ago I applied what I was taught and with back-up set's close..I'm a believer ...So...Do any of you use DBLS from a trap company called Livestock Protection Company?..a #4 DLS is 80.00 for one trap...They certainly believe their DLS is the cat's meow..LOL..Carl

Livstock protection are made after the old newhouse traps. very well built from high quility metals their #4 weighs 2 3/4lbs each. There springs are top end stuff, won't get that for 15.00 or 20.00 per trap.
In non hard packed snow in our terrian not many bushrod to be truthful. I will agree no one catches every one. I suppose using the 20% figure say I have 8 traps in an area and I catch 6 cats missing 20% would be 1.2 cats if I have 10 cats taken out of a drainage and I miss 20% that is 2 cats, so I can see the numbers and frankly taking 10 and missing 2 I will take those numbers all day long on cats in this area as we don't have the numbers to support a 360 cat take. We have a 2 month season 8 weeks and weather is a major factor for many who trap them.
