A don't care what you feed your dogs, what I do care about is other people understanding that protein rating means very little by an in itsewlf. I also care about fences.

for most of my trapping coyotes- the number taken was directly related to time spent-
but not the past 2 years- 2007s year numbers were close to the norm (84) but thought with the work I did should have had more BUT trapped 10 days less... so all in all a 100 coyote year assuming those 10 days.....
so-
this year, really hit it hard- not dusk to dark hard, but 100+ traps hard plus coon.
and it simply didn't work out like planned-
take a farm where farmers told me "yeah, lots of yotes around" and I'd bang 3,4,5 etc quick-
but many normal spots- little or no luck-
had 1 location where its ALWAYS minimum of 4-5, and most years 7-8 , last year 9 for 20 years- this year- a coyote first night- and nothing.
another location- 7 last year- this year not a trap touched-
several other examples-
coon as well were down- but coon come and go- I've seen a general decline in coon on individual farms over the years, but it goes up and down regular
so- back to coyotes-
when will my populations regroup?
fox have been consistent btw and increasing each year- every farmer you talk to tells you they are seeing fox, where a few years ago they didn't. I took fox scattered all over this year- on farms that I never saw a fox for 20 years-
so if parvo or distemper or whatever- whats the cycle?
thoughts?

LOL- that white head reminded me of the old patch beagles- mostly white with a few spots of color

agreed- unless fresh or lightly tainted meat thats edible, most baits are indeed lures

they ate a meal, then went to baited and lured set? so your lures are all food lures? or was your lure a skunky or other type of multi curiosity lure?
I've had them walk by bait piles consisting of gophers, muskrats and beaver- with no interest, and go immediately to a lured set-
thus, my comments that one with a fully belly, MIGHT not be all that interested in eating again righht away-
look at another aspect- on hounds you never feed them before running- it takes way some of the desire and sharpness of nose.
would a coyote that filled up on a dead deer to the point he wants no more, and walks away- be 100% attracted to a meat based bait a block away?
or would he be more apt, if he works it at all- to be attracted more to the "desert" (lures) than the main course?

Tman ever tested those traps with zero pan tension except for the springs and using just a squared up pan notch
yes 100s of times both in and out the ground- with a Sullivans testor
you show me HOW you get less than 2 lbs out of ANY 4 coiled trap properly adjusted-
if you believe it, fine- I don't- but it doesn't matter

too bad sunshine- when you make a post like that- 2 options occur-
1) I can make a post reeming you out for a dumb post, one that serves no purpose, shows no dog knowledge or common sense, just wasting my time and just plain pissing me off-
or
2) I can delete it and hope it dies
I choose the latter- but I can sure do the first if you want-

finch- I never said it was better - I just said I see no difference-
once again the point got lost in the yellow stuff-
Im no offset expert-
never claimed to be-
but, as a trapper using bridger cut out offsets, and montana lugged offsets- being just a little old country trapper. I can't see the difference enough to take a blanket statment like was made-
that the "lugged offset was worthless as an offset"
at face value without questioning that oh so very authoritive declaration-

to do 90 sets that were in the ground the last time, I barely got by with a gal plus a 1/4 gal or so of urine- and I wish I would have had another 1/2 gal to do the job right-
