A person can act moral or immoral as to there own standards, but without a religion setting rules of what morality is, than morals cease to truly exist. What keeps someone from doing something that is not illegal but immoral if that person refuses to believe in a higher power? I never understood why people want to be atheists, seems simple to me, believe and try to live life up to God's standards or refuse to believe and possibly miss out on something absolutely incredible. Its a lot easier to be an atheist, never have to fear doing something presumed to be bad, especially if you don't get caught. I live my life with 2 simple rules. 1. Don't be an ass, treat others with respect and expect the same from them. 2. Trust in myself and all will be well. minkman, you were born an atheist until someone indoctrinated you without you even knowing it, totally willingly. I don't hold that against you, you never had a choice of what to believe in. I, fortunately, was given the opportunity to make my own decisions of what to believe (or not to believe). From birth, that's how they keep the ruse going, get them while they're young and impressionable. Yes, organized religions are cults. Look up the term 'cult', religion fits it perfectly. If there were the god you speak of, why'd it take two books to get his point across? Why is there so much suffering and pain? Why don't we live in the utopian world theists believe will come only AFTER death? I'm sure you have an explanation for this? It's a myth and a fantasy. Religions make humanity weaker, not stronger.

I like this saying
Religion is the belief for those that believe there is a He11. Spirituality is for those who have been there and made it back! For those that use Religion as a strong and permanent crutch to set their moral com-pus also then have something by which they can judge others, compare the degree of their sins and faults and blame the religion they lean on when things unravel. My faith is not in my religion it is in my God. religion is for me a good tool to help me develop and work on my faith. it is a means not an end.

1972, you should read your rule number one again, then review your comments about the "simpletons" among us that have a belief system.

You are wrong about whether or not I had my own choice whether or not to believe in God. You are also wrong about anybody being born an atheist. Atheism is a choice and a belief. Nobody can make choice as a baby to be a believer or not. I was never forced to believe. We rarely went to church as a child and I was never pushed to learn about religion. In fact, right now as an open minded individual I believe now more than ever. As far as living in a perfect world, as I said before, we are on this planet given free will to do as we please. Even if that is to hurt or help others. God can't intervene on every occassion. What would be learned from that? I think you guys who are athiests have been and are continuing to be influenced by religion more than you think. As far as weak minded, it is so much more complicated to try and understand and live by the way of God than your own set of rules.

As far as weak minded, it is so much more complicated to try and understand and live by the way of God than your own set of rules. You obviously haven't taken the time to learn the definition of an atheism. I'll enlighten you, 'atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities'. So what you're saying is that children are born predisposed to believing in god, right? WRONG. Children are indoctrinated without knowing what's happening. That's how religions keep going. Because if the masses were allowed to think for themselves, religions would cease to exist. As far as your 'God can't intervene on every occasion.' line goes, I was told that your god is omnipotent and is watching all of you every second of every day. Yeah..OK. Whatever gets you through this life. "As far as weak minded, it is so much more complicated to try and understand and live by the way of God than your own set of rules." Explain how. In detail if you would please how it's MORE complicated. I'd love to know. You might change my mind. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism

I remember studying antropology in college. They taught us that every human culture on the planet had certain customs and beliefs whether they were separated by oceans and hemispheres.
Birth, Death, Puberty, Harvest, and worship of god(s) are the ones that I remember off hand.
I don't believe that there was ever a culture of athiests until relatively recently.

C1972 your something....................... What I do not know? But something......................
My great aunt was a practicing catholic nun longer than you been alive and who are you to tell her, that the belief system is wrong or misguided your an arrogant #### aren't you?
Your arrogance is something else I can tell you that!
Plenty of people in many religons are FREE thinkers or Obama/Biden wouldn't get a single catholic vote period! Even biden says he abides by his churches thoughts on abortion, but won't impose such on others. That is what you would call a free thinker would it not?
He has religon and doesn't allow his religon to define him from trying to get re elected yep a free thinker.............................

Or so the story goes..........
So you better do good works to earn your spot in the hereafter huh ?
Would that be surprising ? Pretty much every culture has their own creation legends too, some are very entertaining.

There is much in that belief system that was wrong and misguided. The Vatican did admit to that............................ Eventually.
It did take them almost 400 years to apologize for their wrongful prosecution of Galileo for heresy "for holding as true the false doctrine taught by some that the sun is the center of the world".

It also guarantees you freedom from religion.
Thanks, I will.
If you believe in that. Personally I don't believe in Heaven or Hell, when you die you're food for the fungi.

Protects us from whom ? The religious...........................
That's nice, but you and your religion has needed protection from other religions.
The parochial school system is a legacy of that historical fact.
