Bob Wendts skunk dispatching method

I just talked to my veterinarian, and she said that you can not dispatch skunks with sodium pentobarb. She very adamantly said it HAD to be injected in the vein.

All this time Bob Wendt has been doing it wrong, and I guess all his skunks have been playing 'possum. Who would have thunk it. ;D

Anyway, they would not let me buy any (being a controlled substance I can understand), or recommend a substitute. I got the idea that they did not approve of my being a trapper. Looks like after about ten years I will be finding a new vet.

Does anybody have any ideas for dispatching without them spraying?

I'm told Acetone works well i havent used it myself

You can inject them with 15cc's of acetone(fingernail polish remover). Takes about 20 seconds for a skunk to go down. Check your local game laws because it is illegal in some states.

na pentobarb it is not illegal in any states if under the prescription ( dispencing) of a dvm. i.e. a dvm can dispence the na pentobarb and then it is legal for a layman to use it. she just didn`t want to do it. I`d advise find a farm vet,an older guy. or if you want to go thru the hassles and are not a convicted felon, apply for a controlled drug liscence and buy your own direct same as dog pounds or the vet does it. and, it is absorbed by any method including intra thoracic, or even orally. it need not go directly into a vein. I`ve said it before and will repeat it again, many of the recent grads aren`t squat brain wise. back in the 70`s there was a shortage of vets and vet schools had 700 aplicants for 60 openings. it took straight "a`s" to get in and a rigorous interveiw etc. typically classes were 55 white male, one black male and 4 females. vets gradually became over populated, as happened to attorneys and teachers at times. then the vet schools couldn`t even find 60 applicants for the 60 openings. now they have to advertise for applicants and will go down to "c" averages and the classes are 2/3 women ,as men won`t do it anymore as they can`t support a family on it. virtually anyone but an idiot can get in now. and look what the public gets for animal medical care now- definitlty a way lower quality dvm than in years past. the vet schools now actually teach courses in "animal rights". so when any of you ask why I turned my back on a once honorable profession, now you know. for most of you it might just be easier to use my method, but a caustic like acetone to curdle the lung tissue and suffocate the skunk. takes a minute or two rather than near instant with the na pentobarb. better yet even is a non narcotic ONE cc in the lungs of a canadian product, "t61", which should be available without prescription if you have a canadian buddy that can supply you. the drug companies here in the states won`t handle it as it is DIRT cheap vs the $50 a bottle na pentobarb. like most everything, it`s all about the $$$$$

Try MEK (methal ethyl ketone) Works far better than acetone and also faster.

Just dont get it on you. You can absorb it into your bloodstream right through your skin.

Mec
A very strong specialty solvent with many of the same characteristics of acetone. But a slower evaporation rate then acetone.
It's used to thin specialty epoxies and fiber glass resins.
It's hard on rubber and plastics. Use with caution.
That's what the can say's.

MEK is a VERY strong solvent. Used mostly with car paints, epoxies,bed liners, and several electrostactic paint applications. I use it all the time in my paint contracting business.
EPA is about to ban it soon in many states. It will be replaced by MAK in most places.
I use it to put a positive charge into an eletrostatic paint. it takes about a pint of acetone to raise the charge, while MEK will only need a couple ounces to do the same charge rate.
While a slower evape rate, it is highly volital.
It will nock the socks out of a skunk however.
You can buy it at any paint store. I get it at Sherwin Williams. About $11 a gallon.

Bob w. you said it well and I must agree with you on all accounts. Things have changed drastically since the 70's era in many fields. Most of the new grad and a bit older vets are new school trained and dont have a real clue and their teachers have passed on their mentallity to the newer generation, hence the trend is continuing to breed non field application knowledge in their practice or beyond the box knowledge or thought processes.

A sad situation, it is a must to seek out the 50 plus age bracket vets for more common sense type experience and knowledge, particularly those in the farm sector areas.Look to some of the ranchers or farmers in your area for recommendations as to the DVM's that they use.

When Bob was younger he use to sweet talk and sing the skunks Into a deep sleep. He would then milk them of the valuable essence. He saw no need to kill the skunks that were making him all this money. After years of doing this the skunks and Bob became close friends and the skunks would just roll over and let Bob fondle them I guess they sort of looked froward to It. LOl

na pentobarb is a class II narc and cannot be used by lay people. Although the vet can write a script for seizuring dogs and cats called phenobarbitol, given orally to control seizures.

Isn't na pentobarb the same drug that some vets have used to committ suicide?

Acetone works and is readily accessible.

Also, if you were to get na pentobarb, be very careful as to how you dispose of the carcass, if an animal ingest the carcasses it will be in danger of an overdose and dying.....

This is not a drug you want to fool with.

richard, it can be used "on the order of a vet". i.e. he can dispence whole bottles. it`s used commonly by laymen in most every dog pound in the u.s. if anyone has committed suicide by it, I`ve not heard about it. a gun to the noggin is so much easier, lol, but then the vet sprays all over...... but you are correct, it is absorbed orally also, just takes a long time and much higher doses to do anything in. I doubt many animals have consumed enough na pentobarbed carcases to croak from it. it has a very bitter repelling taste to it that permeates carcases and any attempts to eat tainted carceses. I tasted it once just to see how bad it tasted. man, it`s bad. lol, when I woke up a week later it still tasted bad. I don`t know anyone that would eat it except maybe XXXXX XXXXX or someone like that. it is basically the same identical drug used as intravenous anesthesia for surgery ("surital" ), but an overdose.
