or maybe why fix what isn`t broke, especially if the proposed fix is by someone that hasn`t the numbers, miles ,or experience to be promoting fixes? if you are broken , by all means, get fixed. many of us are not broken, and running on 10 cylinders smooth as silk. I amazed the newbies that think those who went before them and pioneered modern methods are "broken". lots of us went thru various break downs and learned and now are at a stage of master trapper in every sense of the word, and can separtate b.s. fron true field knowledge quick as we can spot a coon trail going down the interstate at 70 mph, or glance at a field and pick the perfect location 99 times out of 100. when you can figure that 100th location, then there is something you can help with. but if you are still scratching your head trying to figure which corner, field crossing, carcase dump, or grass swail to set, well you know. no offensse freepop, certaintly not aimed at you , or in fact anyone. but that sentiment of newbies trashing guys that could trap circles around most is very pervasive, especially with the advent of the net. while some are provoked to be "thinking about it" others already have, years ago, and are killing coyotes like a fine oiled machine. they aren`t against change, just dead set against going backwards and trying what they already did years ago. hope no onme is offended by this post, as not meant to be in that context.

Bob, I wasn't trying to piss you off, I may be a newbie to trapping but not to life. At 47 I've been aronund the block a few times and I have nothing but the utmost respect for people that have put in their time, for they are the ones that really know. What I was trying to say was, well let me paraphrase. I'm in the mechanical Engineering field. Been here for 22 years and I worked with a good many people. I have witnessed some of the older guys that develop tunnel vision, this material, this part, my way or the highway........ I, no way, was implying that you were that way, but you have to admitt, there is a few on the boards that way. I really don't want to name names for fear of retrobution. In the end, I meant no disrespect Bob. I'll bow out and insert my head back into my rear end.

oh cut it out. I knew what you meant. no one on here pisses me off as I`ve been run over, shot , stabbed and bitten to the bone and even that stuff hardly phases me anymore. a guy tried to bite my tit off once in a bar fight and that riled me for a few minutes. i had him in a head lock giving him a nookie and all the sudden holey moley I thought I was dieing.

One last, I believe Mark to be a guy that is passonate about what he does. From what I've gathered, he has no chip on his shoulder and never says always or never about animals. He's always polite considerate and open for a discussion. Like this guy said: My 2 cents..... Mark is a good guy. Very personable, well spoken and likeable. . He also does an excellent job representing trappers.... he is one of the individuals we lead the media towards at the national. He is very supportive of trapping and the various associations. He puts on a very entertaining demo, involves the crowd and has the kids participate. I can certainly see why he is a crowd favorite. I'll be interested in what you think of him when you meet him.

I like Mark and his wife- have met him several times and enjoy talking to him. Don't make this a feud- This is nothing against mark as a person, its a discussion on an idea presented in a trapping magazine.
and I agree with much of what he says- check the land trapping archives, from the early days- and you will see many heated discussions on that very thing.
What I disagree with, is to say you are trying for alphas first, is nonsense during fur season at the very least ie "adults".
and there are many ways of looking at that I guess... and non hold water.
IMNSHO, there is no set, no lure, no method that would be capable of taking the alphas FIRST that would not catch the first coyote that walks by.....and wouldn't the idea of "targeting" alphas be, to catch them first?

key here is during fur season. his theory might (MIGHT) hold water in a highly stressed population in sheep country in spring/summer work. but he can`t be doing that and conventioning every week end. if he has ever adc summer worked he has never said. and fur trapping fall un -hasled mega populations in the nebraska sandhills when prices are in the crapper is something most anyone could do and look pretty slick. take a copuple weeks off and do 12-15 a day by noon. heck, it`s easy early and dry and in unexploited cattle country. I think he has a full time job as a sales rep for a medical drug company, or so I was told. I`ll ask him all this stuff when he is here in a couple weeks. over the phone he seems like just great and normal person to me. some folks feel threatened by him. I don`t, I sell all my pee every year, don`t peddle supplies ortgo to conventions or give demos. and I don`t care who is king banana in the coyote world. I just do my thing best I can and what ever anyone else does affects me not. so as far as I`m concerned he can be my best buddy and I hope he is. and chris m and wiley e and tman and zag and heck, I`m easy!

that never happened! but she does still tell me where she sees cats cross while on the rural route. that makes her a better friend than most of the trappers on here. $$$$$.

Mark now lives in the town I grew up in and where I still do the majority of my trapping. I've met both him and his wife and they are good people. You can stop by their place most anytime to pick something up or just visit. I also think he has a full time job as a sales rep. That I think is the reason for the move to Neb. It was here, WY or one other state I think. I think what he's doing for trapping and getting those kids at his demos excited is great and all but as far as this alpha male theory goes I'm w/ most of you, catch whatever comes by first. It sounds good but HOW IN THE HECK DO YOU CATCH HIM FIRST?
