LUCKILY BOTH MINE LIVED BUT THE EAR CAUGHT ONE NOW HAS ONE COW EAR AND ONE HOUND DOG EAR AS IT BUSTED THE CARTILAGE COMPLETELY, LET ALONE THE 40 FEET OF FENCE THE COW TORE OUT, AS LIKE A KNUCKLEHEAD i WIRED THE SNARE TO THE FENCE. oops, cap lock stuck. believe it or not I still trap there, as he has bad coyote troubles and actualy witnesed 2 coyotes take down a newborn calf. he ran them off but the next day the calf was nowhere to be found.

A big deer, in a camlock wolf snare, caught by the nostrils dies in a hurry. The snare closes the nostrils and that's it. An inch or two more and nothing would have happened.
I've released a couple. It's extremely dangerous.
The first was snared by an antler. After having a hoof swing inches from my head I went home to phone for help. The warden I called didn't have the dope to knock them out so we did the forked branch thing. He told me to cut as he stretched it out on the wire. I had my arm extended as far as it could go with crappy warden pliers. The warden was saying "He's strong! He's strong! I can't hold him for long!" As I tried snipping I noticed that a fellow doesn't have much grip strength at his fingertips.
The deer started swinging again and it sawed the antler off.
A second time I was flashlight checking and I saw a mess with the light. I thought I had a wolf until I saw the ears. I shone the light and it didn't move. I walked up and it still didn't move. I finally touched it on the nose with the flashlight. That wasn't such a good idea.
I called the wardens and they tranquilized it to release it.
Deer were very rare here but now they are becoming common. There are a few areas I don't set snares because of them.

best deer story I have , I was snaring a very avid deer hunters place and hooked a very nice 8 point by a horn. went and woke up the farmer/deer hunter at 4 a.m. and told him I had the deer on his property and did he want to shoot it since season was in? he says, oh no, that wouldn`t be ethical but he`ll help me turn it loose. he packs a .45 or some big cannon pistol anyway. I shine the light on him and he woofs like a bear and charges us. XXXX is standing right behind me and dang near blew my ear drum out when he shoots that cannon right next to my head. later in the day I take my wife over to see the deer and XXXX has it hanging and a dozen or so hunting groupies admiring it. we over hear him telling how he had been watching the deer all summer, stalked it an hour blah blah. we had to leacve as we busted out laughing. my wife pee`d her pants even she laughed so hard.

entertaining post!
I do a lot of snaring, in deer and moose country, even snared in woodland cariboucountry once.
my conclusions?
Duck poles catch fewer deer, but catches them by the neck - they die.
No duck poles means more deer, but more leg caught than neck caught - leg caught ones usually alive (not always - hunters and coyotes may find them before you).
Moose and caribou will avoid duck poles, and moose often break wire (but not always).
I have met at least one live moose that was easy to release.
All deer leg-caught and live were released, but thank the guy who invented C-7 cable cutters. No craked ribs, but I play it extremely safe.
I snare to kill, so deer stops are not desired. But this year, 700 new snares with breakaway S-hooks. I had to realse 3 leg caught ones last year, figured the s-hooks will save me at least that this year.
Neck caught deer die fast. Good news is, they usually are smaller deer.
ps. Each coyote you catch saves 3-4 deer a year (at least, one study suggests that) and I use that info to calm upset hunters and landowners...

I`m going to have to quit trapping coyotes then, just to peeez off the indiana dnr that wants a season on coyotes. maybe they should get what they want, no more free coyote control and when their funds dry up from less deer lisc sold we can all laugh and point at them. and tell them to get their own wallets out.

Rich, Read my post again about "Winter Stressed Deer". I'm not talking about a dusting of 6-12 inches. Winter stressed deer are like electricity and take the path of least resistance. With three feet of snow the smallest opening will be used. Eighteen inches to the top will take them one right after the other, especially yarded deer. Also concider the bucks have shed by then. I'd even give you 10-1 odds on it. GCS, Just fine. BobW, CWD deer could also become a very lucrative alternative for us.

at the nadc academy last month that very topic of cwd deer managment was discussed as a possible narrow window of opportunity for out of the box thinkers to make huge mega $ if they got in on the ground floor. but don`t tell anyone!

If your going to make any money off CWD your going to have to become a Wildlife Services trapper (USDA)

don`t bet on it. they can`t even begin to handle it once it explodes. and if they can, then theyare going to need to hire thousands of temps and permanents. but that will be at povery wages. the $ is in private adc.

All the deer are processed and donated to the local food pantry's and other organizations that feed the poor. Yep I'm sure some of those deer go home but at least their not being wasted. They are all tested, Or so I'm told.

"or so you are told". man, that sounds like a nightmare in the making to me. I won`t eat wyoming deer or elk anymore and anyone that would is a fool in my mind. a negative test is not foolproof, pending infection time of the deer with the prions. I can just hear the minoritys screaming as they get alzheimers in 10 years, how it was a white plan to destroy the races of color. I`m serious. if they need killed, they need burned.

The few deer that I have snared have been reduced to a head and neck bone the next day. The yotes will eat them up in a hurry down here. No catch and release.... Great place to set a few traps for the next day.

I also forgot to add that I usually only snare crawl under locations that are too small for deer. If I am snaring out in the open its behind cover or brush where the rancher or hunters will not see the snared animal if they drive by. In those situations I am trying to catch a hog or coyote, and if a deer is caught then nobody knows about it except me......
