I did keep track of yoy vs adults and sex this year- haven't had time to crunch the numbers, but I will soon.
That 60% isn't a number I know for a fact, just something I've read in a few studies
and that's for unexploited, meaning disease free in areas like mine. So 30% of less could well be true if parvo or something spread through an area.
thinking on my season- lines where catches were average or above- contained more pups and lines with below average years, had more adults & if memory serves me mainly males.
to me the concept of the coyotes innate behaviors determining if and how he works a set, explains so many things

Would you say innate behaviour and natural tendencies are the same? Getting back to Nevers and others observations, you discard the idea that the coyotes have associated a dirt hole with smelly stuff as a danger and avoid them, heck even flat sets with lure. Og documented on occasion running into these types thus the mafia set. Normally it's pretty basic ,see sign, punch in dirt hole catch coyotes. Or following the tendencies of coyotes to check out or use certain terrain features in their travels set traps. Gotten to the point where I'm not worried how they work a set on certain properties but will they.

no, I don't discard the idea. I think a coyote can become lure shy but not in any systematic way. In other words individuals may (but with my examples of recaught coyotes under stress situations would show this to me minimal)become shy of a certain lure- but that doesn't mean they are shy of all lures, or all dirtholes.
and in an ADC setting, where traps are kept for long periods, you will get coyotes that are location shy.
yes, innate behaviors are the same as natural behaviors
Gotten to the point where I'm not worried how they work a set on certain properties but will they.
not sure I understand what you mean-
all I can say is HOW (or if) they will work a set WHERE is my #1 thought on a location. Lets put it another way-
few if any disagree that coyotes tend to be neophobic, meaning cautious (afraid, nervous, spooky) when they encounter new things.
Wouldn't you agree that taking the above as a given (and I do) would lead one to the conclusion that there are places where a coyote is neophobic to varying degrees-
that in some situations/locations hes at the high end of the scale, and others hes at the low end.
so my job, is to figure out where hes at the low end, or at the very least not on the high end of that scale.
and set construction plays into it as well- the set itself can add to, or reduce neophobic reactions
for example I just read where someone catches most of his coyotes on scent posts while nearby dirtholes remain empty. So 2 conclusions come to mind 1) his coyotes just won't work dirtholes or 2) they weren't very good dirtholes.
snow shows you coyotes can "work" sets from a distance of many feet- something bare ground doesn't show you. so that "shy" coyote isn't dirthole shy per se, he is shy of THAT dirthole.
looking at Never's scenario- he is getting coyotes that aren't working the sets- so his solution is to do what he knows works, and sets he enjoys putting in.
I was simply suggesting that if he moved those sets, he might find that now they weren't shy of the lures/set but shy of WHERE the sets were for those particular coyotes. edited: ok- read what you said again, and understand it now-
but the how is important as well- do they approach it head down, ears back, nervous and on pin needles? are they working the set ie interested, approaching it) but not going into the trap? Do they take 1 whiff and leave?
or do they approach it with at least measure of confidence?
it matters

locker.att.net/web/app/share/invite/O6qmDKeZpnCoyotes and fox don't mix when your in fox country, I have 5 sets of this property, all coyote specific as far as traps used, trap placement. This is the property I've written about. The male that's been doing the damage #5 to date, is the dirt hole and pretty much anything I put out avoider. Nevers video shows next plan when we get snow. The red worked a set next to an old catch circle from Dec that had the males mate. Pee and some of Keg Creeks gland lure. I did put 2 dirt holes in, one with Martys White knuckles which certainly draws the predators in when the cold weather hits as witnessed in the snow. This coyotes behaviour rare to say the least, Inate or neophobic.

hate it when that happens-
have your sets been at the same locations all along?
