Funny how some "trappers" are crying over a dollar dip in(avg) rat prices. Myself, I have no problem trapping rats at ANY price. But, with prices high the last few years, I can actually make a nice profit. This season I will hit them even harder. So, how long will we see prices like this? It's been a great ride, but will the "gravy train" de-rail anytime soon?

blackhammer- is that for corresponding sales- or in the case of 2011 on back a average of all sales?

Now that China has a better grip on shearing beaver, I think that rats dip a bit more. Beaver will be next years "hot fur". Along with red fox.

I thought about that as well Packerfan. Will they be using beaver for the same portion of the garment as they are now using rats? If so, rats could go way down. If not, then not an issue. I have no idea where these beaver are being used personally.

From what I was told. Rats fill the gap when RANCH mink gets too high (or sold out). Beaver will now be used to fill this gap as well. Clearly, more fur on a beaver. But, more rats harvested in a season. If RANCH mink prices drop, both critters should follow.

I don't think so guys. Beaver will NEVER replace the rat. You know why because trapping beaver Is to dam much work and there are very few guys that would make that commitment. I've done the 300 beaver In 60 days gig and It's not for the faint of heart. Then of coarse you will probably have to cold roll Into some southern state. Because we sure won't be able to go to MN and WI beaver numbers are way down. Not going to happen guys just keep trapping rats. When the price Is down catch more of them. But of coarse 39 will be looking for the $70.00 coyotes

But I'm right.
If you kept your job how many beaver could you realistically catch during MN beaver trapping season.
Even with new or improved beaver processing I think the weight of the hides would be a factor In how they are used.
Beaver trapping Is just plain work from start to finish. Not many are willing to take It on.
I still think rats are still king.

Dropped about 75 beaver off at the FHA truck on Sunday. It was full to the roof with beaver. Said he could only go 50mph due to the weight. I/m a little nervous about putting those on the June sale. Something tells me I should have froze those with the rest.
Any predictions? Remember....spring beaver like spring rats...bit up to some degree.

blackhammer- is that for corresponding sales- or in the case of 2011 on back a average of all sales? Mostly Feb sales of those years. Not an exact list but a general idea of what the market was.

Calvin, I'm taking a few beaver down to Greg Thursday. I think they would do better next year, but i will sell them in June. My focus now is on the next NAFA sale. I don't have fur in there, but I will be cheering for the rats. I know Beav will. GO RATS!

The spring beaver I will have at FHA are really in good shape with few bites and very few with shedding. So I an cautiously optimistic.I have got too much money and labor in those beaver already . The gas to trap as far north as Baudette was a bit much but my buddy had a cabin for us to trap out of so that was a good deal. Those northern beaver did make our southern Mn reddish, course beaver look sick. My guess for Nafa on rats ,everything ,section three included $8.75.

As a replacement for muskrat as a liner for Chinese coats/jackets, I was told beaver, even sheared, is too heavy.
The leather being a big contributor to that extra weight.
In general, the Chinese are a diminutive people.......so the fur and leather needs to be on the light side, and the reason muskrat is such a good choice for that demographic.
AND, again as I was told, this is the reason red fox are a good alternative for rats, creating a market for even the flat reds.
Maybe someday they will figure out a use for flat coyotes!

Thanks Zagman. I was told the same thing today by a major buyer and shipper in regards (to my concerns) beaver taking the place of rats. Nope... Too heavy.... as you stated.
Seems the beaver may be trying to compete with Ranch mink. Sheared and plucked is similar to ranch mink.

I still think the weight of the hide Is going to be a problem. I have never seen a ranch mink laid along side a plucked and sheared beaver hide but I have my doubts of their similarity.

Good discussion here. Everything posted here makes sense to me. I'm just glad beaver is up, as I hate to pass them up on my water line. They take up alot of space/weight in my otter sled. #330's do too.

Could be on the hide itself, Beav. was told the fur looked VERY similar though. And why this beaver thing has taken off....to some degree anyhow.
Word is coyotes are back to normal...at best. Unless things change or course. Was thinking about doing more coyotes next year. Not anymore.

Right about what? Beaver replacing rats? Heck i dont know. What makes my head hurt is saying a feller is gonna hit it harder next year on the rats when we have been on the top of the rollar coaster for three years. If you kept your job how many beaver could you realistically catch during MN beaver trapping season.
How many could i catch? Well if my day job was a regular one where I worked 8 hours a day 5 days a week with some paid vacation, it would shock you how many I could catch if the price was at 40 buck avg. Last year with the weather the way it was I'd say 400 would be conservative. Any predictions?Calvin you want me to say what i think or be nice. I've never been a fan of the June sale. If you caught those beavs in southern Mn I'd say 20 22 bucks. More coyotes next year calvin? Now I have a migrain. What I have been told is the beaver are being plucked and sheared. Than cut into strips trying to create an alternative to mink. The chinese supposedly can now do a good job tanning, plucking shearing and dying for bargain basement prices and a quick turn around.
