Got more coyotes going in NAFA pickup this morning, should have took back the $7 ones and shipped them also. Jim

Posted by mightydog on Yesterday at 8:04pm Just a suggestion, Walk with your bottom third in priced furs, and ship them to an auction house.I would bet you would be pleased
Thats kind of what I said.

I am sure I could have pulled individual furs, I see guys do it here quite often.
Not only pulling your bottom priced furs but also your top priced ones and shipping to auction may be a good thing.
Back in 2004 a couple days after FHA posted there averages from an auction Groenewold oftered me a little less than what the average was at the auction for 59 coyotes. I couldn't get him to come up to the average and pulled all of them, sent them to NAFA after commision I came up a little short of what I had been oftered by Guy. I did have several that sold in the $40 range and one that went for $64. Also had a couple $2 ones. So maybe the top ones are where you would come out ahead. That is why I shipped 11 to NAFA this year, some that I thought were mostly better ones. This is just for fun anyway. Jim

But I do like what I'm seeing here and hearing from others about what 'rats and mink are doing. I'm doing what I did last year. Hanging onto my 'rats and mink for awhile. Weibke in La Crosse did me just fine last year and I'd like a repeat on that sale this year.

I'd have to disagree somewhat with the advice to to pull the top and sell elsewhere.
not sure how Groeny would look at it, but my dealer looks at it like this-
I bring him most all of my fur each year. He wants that fur. I make him money.
I don't believe I get more on the top or bottom end, but I DO think I get the benefit of the doubt on the middle. He knows what a trapline run is around here, and he knows what the resulting fur, on average, should look like, running from low to top with te majority of it being "average"..
so if someone that normally brings in a trapline run of say 150 coon, and this time brings in 75 smalls and medium value fur- it doesn't take a genius to figure out someone else is getting the best fur- and I do think the price quoted for the "junk" becomes lower-
because normally, low value fur means little profit at any end, whereas, the gamble to make money is with the top fur of that line.
the price of the end fur when the dealer resells it is going to remain unchanged- but like anything, the local dealer is dealing with a profit margin, and with that, he has room to dicker.....

as far as the coyote price- until you see midwestern coyotes, you can't speak of them in any way- while most are decent colored, the bellies are what make them a $35 or a $7 coyote.
and more often than not, the bellies are weak, or slighly discolored.
I too sold coyotes for $35 this past fall- but I also had 5 go for $4-
there again, I got the token $4, which paid for my putup, in large part because of the others including the top end ones.
If I would have brought in just my $15 coyotes I have no doubt I'd have gotten less for them, and zero for those 5.
Same with anythign really- bring in a bunch of good mink- and the odd bad one, doesn't get downgraded as it would as a singleton-
another example- last time I sold, a guy had 15 or so rats- all were full of holes. He got something like $3.25 for them, in my option a gift.
on my rats- he looked at them pulled a few, asked if many kits or damaged, I said very few, he asked how many and I got $6 plus for them- and my average rat is 14.5 or so, a few going 15, some 13-14. Having a good average trapline run, brought up my damaged.
we can debate if I would have gotten more, but thats moot to me cause I sell rats every couple of weeks so I ride the wave either direction- not as good a chance of hitting the jackpot, but zero chance of busting.

You are not taking into consideration that 2/3 of my coyotes are what I would consider adults, he probably thought I had a good run of large ones, but I still shipped what I thought were 11 of the best and biggest ones that I had. Anybody got a reason I caught mostly 30 plus pound males. Jim

One year when F-T was buying they graded by how white the bellies were, size didn't seem to be a factor unless it was a real runt. I had a 13 pound female one Oct. day looked healthy just real young. Jim

Size seems to still be of little matter- first its overall color, pale or ranging towards the silvry/black (reds and goldens while looking pretty, get downgraded for me), and then flip em over and the bellies are final factor.

Muskrat made that statement Not me.
I sold castor to Dan and made a good deal. Selling castor at auction will In most cases lose you money. To much weight loss while It's waiting to be sold.

Well, I am a "good" guy. But great? Thank you, Gary. Stop making trouble Lee! Seriously.....Groeny's prices have been looking good (overall) this year. But, I think the auctions will do better. I have some BIG early coon at NAFA, Everything else is in FHA's March sale. I will sell some fur locally in Kansas. Dice rolled.............oh well, hope it goes well.
