Steve, it's the ONLY choice we have. I would rather carry 6 conibears (and use natural fencing) under a bridge, than 6 colony traps (using 5 as fencing). Either way, I will have most of the rats out in a few checks. No point in getting into a debate over whether or not I USED natural guides OR PUT IT THERE! And YES.......we have wardens here that WILL debate this. Which, by the way, is when I pulled and left (early) for KANSAS! Their "Parks Dept."(DNR) works WITH trappers, NOT against them. Kansas has an OUTSTANDING wildlife management program. Trappers, hunters, fishermen, hikers, etc. RESPECT each other. Wardens do their job professionally and treat trappers EXTREMELY well. Ok......I'll get off my soap box. Maybe they just don't know you yet in Kansas

LOL! That is true long. I just think they have better things to do and less hassell from the PTB. Most wardens here treat me just fine. Like Nathan in Dane and John in Sauk. It's a tough job. I could never do it.

life is funny-
I know a few in my area, that are always having trouble with the wardens- wardens are out to get them, play dirty tricks and on and on-
yet, I find every warden I come across respectful and fair- and I've never gotten a citation or in a beef- they look at my stuff, we shoot the shite for a bit, and we go on our ways
go figure......

Well, it all depends on who you (and your family) are. My brother's,cousins, and buddies were known as those" kids from Madison" who's families bought up all those farms in the 50's/60's. In the 70's and 80's (we were in our teens and 20's) we may have caused a little trouble and got in a few bar fights, but then we grew up. Some wardens would stake out some of our farms during deer season. LOL! They never hid very well.

Some wardens are good some are bad like all other walks of life.
But my feeling is kinda like getting a speeding ticket. If you are driving too fast you are driving too fast.
Only got a little perturbed with one in my life.
About 1989 or so, I went ice fishing the day after we had to get new licenses. Bought my new fishing license but totally spaced getting one for my fish house. Of course we got checked and I got a fine. He could have cut a guy some slack seeing as I had license tags on my house for the last 6 7 years.
Now we dont have to license those type of houses. Go figure.
But it was kinda like speeding, if you are driving too fast you are driving too fast.

I remember one day maybe 40 years ago, when lics expired on Jan 1-
I always took the hounds out for a solitary new years day hunt- I was way back i nthe marsh, hounds working well, when a warden came puffing up out of no where to check my lic. He acted kind of shocked I had a current one, and then sat and listened to the hounds for a while..
I wasn't speeding.......LOL

You must be old.
I dont remember when the license expired Jan. 1.
Speaking of license. I better go get a new one lol.
Of course I dont need a new fishing license for another couple months but have to buy one anyhow seeing as they werent smart enough to keep trapping license pegged with the fishing.

Back to colony traps. I think I'll dip mine in some formula 1 before I put them away.

Paint or dip colony traps??? If you made them with good wire and store them away In a dry shed I see no reason to dip or paint. I have 100s of 220 and 160 trap enclosers and they are just as rust free as the day I made them and I store them out side behind the shed.

Lee... that's what I do with water traps, but I have some F1 sitting around(used it on cat/yote traps). But, I THINK Beav is right. Not sure they need anything but a good powerwash.

I wish they would just have it go til end of beaver- so a 2011-2012 lic would run from oct to end of beaver, no matter when you purchased it.

I dont care really when it ends, just wish they would leave it alone and keep it pegged with the fishing license like they used to be.
You know the time before some politician's buddy got a ticket because he didnt buy his license after the end of february.
So now buy a fishing license a full two months before I need to because its cheaper to buy it all at once.
I suppose its hard to peg a license until the end of season because seasons change.
