That photo surpises me as I looked over the Alcatraz at a convention. The top of the tube (where the door meets) has a smooth rod welded there. Same design as the coon cuff but looked more paw friendly to me. I liked the look of the trap as some coon don't like sticking their paws down the little tube opening. I can see an advantage to a larger opening....for coon...not fox apparently.
Personally, I can't see many fox being caught so what percentage of injuries we talking here normally?

The problem I see Is the opening Is to large and the coon Is rubbing It's leg against the edges. It doesn't take long before you have some damage.

I don't have any experience with the Alcatraz so I'm sure not going to say it should be banned.I can't imagine anyone would make a coon trap that would encourage foot damage. The conversation brings to mind a gray I caught on a pond dike a number of years ago.The only year I actually caught a decent number of foxes.I believe I had twenty or so grays and a good amount of reds. This one on the pond dike chewed every leg but the one in the trap,an ugly deal.A old female.Had a few others that fought the trap very hard and where talking one and three quarter sized laminated traps. So I'm not going to judge the trap on one pic.

Beav, in another thread you posted something like "a sample from running a large line and many critters caught will get you better info than a few sets out on the weekend on what is really going on".
I ran the Traz on 2 diff river lines last year and had a good sample of what the trap does and doesn't do.... and its far from a trap that produces damage...lol.
I had an issue twice in frozen ground where the coon could not get the stake out of ground (my fault) as I drove in pilot holes with rebar to get the stake in. Other than that no blood, no mess....bop the coon and reset (no mud cleaning as you flip open bottom door and ready to roll again). The anti's can show a pic of anything we do to show "we bad", but is it true?
I didn't see fox pic, but wouldn't base buying or using the trap on one instance....I can put up as many pics as you want of showing zero damage coons caught in Traz... And ps...I don't know Clint L or care that I don't.

thanks for the above report Tim
--------------------- one thing to keep in mind- the #1 rule of CRU is if you don't know- then don't say you do.
don't blame the method if something someone else does with success doesn't work for you.
going back to bait- notice how I never said bait is worse then what I use? no, all I said is I have tried both meothds countless times and its quite obvious TO ME, that both work the same- in early and late season
FOR ME OF COURSE- so do whatever you wish.
if you are having success, you are doing it right.
but the debate will not lead to a pissing match- thus, those posts disappeared. keep the debate on actual experiences- how conclusions were reached would be helpful
--------------------
and as far as the pic- I saw nothing wrong with it- you really think a pic like that, is going to end trapping?
so there is a little blood- so what?
which is why I didn't delete it
------
kspanky- I use the original grizs, the dukes that came out last year, and several prototypes that came out of Jason's workshop.
I've used jack mackerel, I used clams, I've used sardines, I've used pieces of venison and rat, I've used marshmallows with lure, and several different kinds of prepared baits along with what I mostly do now lure and fish oil.
and during this time, more than decade of using some each year, I found out a couple of things-
be off location and not much success- no matter the bait
be on location, and it doesn't matter what type of bait goes in, as long as its attractive to coon
I never have bait above trigger, if I can help it
trap needs to be solidly planted
a tube on the trigger is a bonus
if using bait, a dixie cup over top stops mice, etc from cleaning out the bait (thanks to Jason D for the tip)
if using liquid lure combo, mice cannot clean out anything
the conclusions repeat time after time- for me, I find that lure under the trigger, takes the same number of coon as an edible bait, and is much easier to use and apply. to be fair, the only two combo lures I've used, are Hardcore and ProCoon- both are deadly the big difference, is hardcore shuts down to early for me- anything under 30, and not much scent emulating from the set
if someone else's conclusions are different- so be it.
they aren't checking my traps- I am.
if we all did things the same, there would be no need for demos, videos, books, magazines, etc- ----------------------------
Why would I use black pipe when I feel white pipe works better. Why would I trap beaver under Ice when I have a lot better places to catch them.
not even beginning to ASK you to change your methods-
what I take issue with, is your saying they are inferior, when you haven't done either.
on the beaver- are there better under ice sets? maybe- but none EASIER and effective FOR ME than setting under the thin ice at the fdam in the small creeks I trap. Never claimed it was the best, or anyones "go to" set, or anything of the kind- just stated in my conditions, it worked very well for me.
you feel white is better- fine- me too.
but I also USED, actually USEd black pipes on water one year-
AND THERE WAS NO DIFFERNCE IN SUCCESS RATES AND A LOCATION WITH BOTH COLORS PRODUCED EITHER OR WITH NO PATTERN.
so I can say, with confidence, that on water (which if you recall the original debate, was where I stated they were used) the color DID NOT MATTER.
I said that, because I USED both- and I found out over the 3 months they were used- IT DID NOT MATTER
not theroy, not a gut feeling- but actual on line use

I deleted it so people would stop crying over a nick on the wrist of the fox. The fox was fighting the trapwhen pulled up and got out of the truck. I ran 60 of them for coon last year , the area that i trap has a very heavy grey fox population and we cannot trap them till jan 2. All i was doing was showing they they catch grey also. The alcatraz trap is a little heavy for a gray. but goes to show that they will hit just the same as a coon! It was realeased and ran off fine!
In the past i have caught grey in lil griz and black hole traps. The bait i use is homemade and sweet. with fish oil spread around the set. plain and simple!
next time i'll take a pic at a long distance so people will feel good about themselves!

Theres not a single trap out there all DP's included that at some point you wont have some damage of some sort. Its the coons nature to fight like the devil. Dosent mean the trap is bad.
As far as solid or liquid baits its my conclusion that the solids out perform the liquids even when a marshmellow is used on the trigger w/ the liquids.
I have had alot of coons just dip their paw in the liquid and just lick it off their paw. I had way to many clean outs for my taste using the liquid alone. I started putting a chunk of fish on or under the trigger w/ the liquid and had much better results.
This was with the pull only trigger. Since changing my dp's to the p/p trigger its not as much of an issue w/ the liquid only but still feel better is something solid down there.

pray tell me=- how do you know the liquid has been "licked off?
cause I see zero evidence of that- and as far as "cleaned out"- thats nonsense- you arent going to clean out the odor of a liquid bait-
must be awful small coon to continually get by the trigger-but i guess if thats what you have, do what you need to do.

Sounds like the rest of us should quit posting and you can just teach.
There are plenty of coon that will NEVER pull that lever. Do you think he cant tell its metal as in not a food product. If the coon is reaching in the tube where the trigger goes between his fingers w/ a liquid bait hes probably not going to set off a standard trigger.
Keep on keeping on guess theres nothing left to learn. Feel like Im back on trappperman.

I've been using Griz traps since they came out, and I run a lot of them. From what I've seen on my line, I agree with Beav. At least on my line, an edible bait out produces synthetic lure or any other gadget. I've done the wool and lure, marshmallows and lure, rubber hose, blah blah blah.
A good edible bait is tops on my line, and in my opinion. Like was said, Coon Potion is a great additive to any bait. I've used the Peanut Butter, and the Mixed Berry with great results. I'll be trying the Honey/Persimmon this year also.
The best thing anyone can do, is try them all, and see what works for you. There aren't any hard fast rules in trapping as far as I'm concerned, and I'll never know why something works on one line, but not the other. Just the way it is.

A coon may not pull the trigger thinking it is food, but if it thinks it is in the way he'll try to move it to get to the food. After watching the two we raised this summer, I am amazed by how much they use their feet, front and rear, to experience their world.

its odd that some experiences, are 180 degrees off of what I've observed for a decade or more
since we are "guessing" what a coon does- a pretty obvious guess is is he reaches into something to get an odor, and finds nothing but that nebulus odor, he keeps working.
he knows something is there- he can smell it, he can "lick it off his toes'- he KEEPS WORKING it.
have none of you ever watch coon work things? have none of you ever observed a coon working something of interest? listen to what scott posted- its FACT
or at least thats what appears to happen, since I have none of the avoidance and licking problems so prevalent for others. TUBING on the trigger- can it be any easier?
stef and frinds caught 600 northern coon last week with procoon on marshmallows- oddly, despite the some not using such, something that mirrors Seldoms experiences of the coon eating the mallows up WITH an, according to trappers, "inedible bait".
if you want an edible bait- good god then use it- but don't tell me that it puts off coon, or that they do nothing but lick their fingers, etc-

With pro coon do you use the paste or liquid in the dp traps?

up to you- I've always used liquid and fishoil becasue I like the surface area of tel ure in that fashion.
this year, last week set out a few pipes- just grabbed last years, and added no new lure, and caught coon just fine...nothing has the staying power of procoon

I dont buy into the cleaned out trap won't catch coon. The majority of the time when I run my griz's they are "baited" with fish oil procoon mixture.

As I've been saying, I've been using last years pipes....no nothing but odor.
some odors coon just cannot resist
