I use the round funnel 12 inch diameter, and place around the feed piles of beaver lodges, and use cable to lift them off the bottom. Black holes are hard for rats to not pass into, as well as mink, and most of them are on borrowed air time when below. Oh yes when you fall through the ice there is a black hole you swim to. The holes in a round trap have to be the size of your closed fist, 3.5 inch diameter. The funnel would not be enough for them to get on the other side.Since there would be less than an inch.

I do think you WI guys"asked too many questions" on this one. Should have left at 6 squares is a 6" trap. anything over would be too big. in the field thats about how it would be dealt with, dont have a trap over 6 squares wide or tall. too many detailed questions got too much scruteny and attention You might have spited your face, to save your nose Im afraid. You'll need to go straight to your head of law enforcement division of DNR, Rich, in time the entire story of how an 8" x 8" colony trap proposed and passed by the Fur Harvest Committee of the Conservation Congress was sent to DNR where there it was reduced to 6" x 6" will come out. I wish it was as simple as you believe it to be. When the #220 was enclosed due to guys dinking with the inside measurement, that's when the DNR brought out the micrometers and tape measures. But thanks for your perspective on this issue. I'll keep it in mind.

When trapping gets to carring a measuring device (which it is now) to know if your legal and then your not sure, it sure takes the fun out of trapping. You are wondering if your tape measure , measures the same as the warden!!!!!!

Trap In states that are MORE friendly. Or GO TO COURT
When Individuals with personal agendas work In the DNR we don't stand a chance.

Where are all these turtles I keep hearing about? The ONE place I never see turtles is on my rat line (creeks, small rivers, farm ditches). I did see a few monster snapper's in my brother's pond, but I doubt they could get their head in a colony trap.lol. P.S.- Word on the street is that Lee is a "closet" turtle lover! Lee........Make soup, not war! lol.

I think the turtle issue is a time of year deal. Up here, I/ve never caught a turtle in fur season. However, doing any ADC beaver work in the summer and I can't keep them out of the traps...in the same locations. If this is a turtle issue, you would think (maybe HOPE is a better term) a turtle biologist would know WHEN turtles move around. Shouldn't take some dumb trapper (who knows little to nothing about turtle behavior) to correct this time frame debacle.

I think the turtle thing was just a smoke screen thing to take the pressure off the real Issue. The person Is just against the use of colony traps.

I've caught turtles during fur season over the years here and there, so turtles can indeed move in fur season, and with the late winters we have had its even more possible during the first weeks after opener. and back in the day, it was not uncommon, to see turtles moving under the ice on the upper Refuge marshes. I mention this just to offset the comments that one never sees turtles during fur trapping.
but the percentages of catching turtles during that time, is so low, that it should be negligible as a resource issue
but agree, its a bogus reason to restrict the use of colony traps.
on the other hand, how many trout and other fish, does one catch in 110s? guess I should hush, of the WI dnr might limit 110 use to protect the fish.......................

Ive caught turtles under the ice beaver trapping and you'll catch a few turtles in 330s in the spring.
Have yet to kill one in the cold water.
