TC, not all locals went that high- I sold top average in 4 sales, of a little over $7. bottom a little over $6
I mentioned "I heard" other buyers were paying $8 on up averages, and he said I don't know why.

What do you mean " I sold top average in 4 sales, of a little over $7. bottom a little over $6" WHAT 4 sales? So your actual average was around $6.50 or so?
I mentioned "I heard" other buyers were paying $8 on up averages, and he said I don't know why. Of coarse he would say that why would he give you $8.00 when he could buy at less.
I'm very happy with my $10.00+ average on rats. It looks like I beat the auction average and the country averages this year. And was only down about $1.00 from last year.

so if 6.50 was your true average then what do you think a buyer selling up North on the auction did average on rats? Seeing how the avg was 6.66. Figure in borrowed money I'm sure some didn't fair to well correct?

It would take a collection of early Dakota type rats to average $6.00 (with all of the small and damaged included).

looks like you beat the world beav! congrats
I know no one that shipped, to either auction, that averaged anywhere near that amount on that volume- even your buddy, on some 3000 (I think that was what you said) rats got far less.
I don't doubt your word- but the averge you received, was an anomoly
So the guys that paid $8-9 average last fall, probably ARE thinking "WHO would pay that local?" in hindsight.
Seems like Lee was correct- there seems to be no "why" for such high prices early, beyond hype and hope.

the 4 times I sold rats- first sale in mid Dec was $7.20- last sale 2-23 just over $6-
so yes, probaly true average about $6.50 and a few cents.
I'll take that every year- far too many years selling at a $2-3 average
first prediction for next fall- rats are lower by at least a buck, if not $2.
so a $4-5 average.

Well I know the groney's and the webkies have thier own markets and can afford to pay those higher contry prices. Now the New guy on the block dosen't have that option. And with the country prices the way they were If you didn't pay those averages on rats you weren't going to buy any fur. Things started out here from day one at $7.00 and $8.00 averages and that was being paid for carcass rats also. I had good rats but nothing out of the ordinary. So I don't know why my averages were so high but I'm not about to question the man.

don't blame you- i'd take it too.
were your rats particularly heavy?
I have a thin leathered rat here on the creeks- the old "paperbacks"

Steve.......You are correct! Beav beat the world. I just got off the phone with the LAST rat trapper in the world. Took me a while, but I spoke with EVERY rat trapper (in the world) and no one came near a $10+ AVG. Beav must be special. I would never doubt anything he tells me.

Tman, not sure how your rats compare to ours on the Missouri & Iowa border but believe they are comparable. At NAFA these rats were worth roughly $8.00 when you average in several different shippers.

my rats compare to the ones beavs buddy bought I'd guess, but for sure they compare to the ones folks around me have sent into both auctions-
and $8 wasn't the average.

By the looks of it rats just went up again.
I sold a bunch of rats a couple weeks ago in country for pretty close to the fha avg if a guy figured commision.
More than enough it wasnt an anomoly.
Auction levels are finally catching up to country levels.

The thing is look atht eauction averages.....they don't mean squat compared to what most of us get for well handled fur!!
Here where I am at the guys that boarded and shipped coons averaged between $20.25 and $22.00. The guys that did them on wire and shipped averaged $19-$21..
Exactly where do those prices fit in any of the published averages??

Look for the possible return of muskrat hype, and all wild fur hype. Ranch mink at Finnish Fur sales up another 20%. Looks like the later sales might be better than the earlier auctions.
Ranch mink are pricing themselves out of existence.

unfortunately hype is usually just that-
when actual prices start to climb consistently over all grades, then we have a market.
so hope you are right

Anyone sell rats in Michigan on March 26?
Decent rats went for $9 to $11 according to one buyer who was there.

Well in 5 more days we will now if it was hyped up.
I helped a buddy put up 289 rats he caught in SD the week of the 20th of april.
Sold them for over six bucks. Not too bad for bit up, thin leathered, weak spring rats.
I think I am going to order 10 dozen more 1.5 dukes for next fall.
