Look at both avgs. from the houses on rats....who sold at the right time? If you guys would have sold the remaining 34 percent what do you think the average would have been. I dont have a clue what was held back so I can make an estimation. Prices are still higher in the country than what both houses sold for. +2

Is it not true to be a good accountant; you have to be a GOOD CREATIVE WRITER. Seems that both houses have some especially in the PR room.

Could bebecause groenwalds, wiebkes et al have skin in the game and they have to protect their investment.
Could be they have orders to fill. I dont know how the game really works but it might be that somebody has an order 10000 rats they arent going to sell any until they have all 10000.
Tim can you elaborate to the quality of rats the remaining 34 percent that no saled was.

The beav Is back. We bought 3000+ rats and averaged $6.33 I figured that he had a $8.00 average in them with the cost of put up.
Now I just looked at my sales results and I averaged $10 and a few cents. Don't know why maybe It's the wood. But then we put most of pats rats on wood,so who knows.
My coon averaged $18 and a few cents.
Now I have to put up some beaver and otter, the work Is never done. But then I wouldn't have It any other way.

welcome back old man- missed having you around.
hopefully, your partner gained on the other fur he bought- to lose $5000 on rats first year out, is a tuff lesson.
speaking of wood- put quite a few rats up on wood this year all sold local. and I admit, after doing a good portion on wood and having tem compare to te look of wire rats, I DO like the looks of wood better-
but get this- last time I sold, I mentioned I was starting to put up a lot on wood, and Lee said he noticed, and asked why, didn't I have enough wire?
I told him had plenty of wire, but heard they were better on wood- he said no- you lose length on wood......do them all on wire next year.
this from a guy that buys 1000s and 1000s of rats every year, and has been buying for past 40 years, with rats and coon being his bread and butter.
not trying to start an arguement, just reporting-
I was kind of surprised to tell the truth, never put them up much on wood with the odd one here and there until this year-
he even said to get the most out of them, leave a piece of tail on both sides for the hooks, old school (which I never have done)

I am more optimistic that there is room for muskrat prices to advance some this year. After the last two ranch mink sales and the high prices paid I think the buyers will look for a cheaper skin and place more orders for muskrats. Somewhat interested to see the results of the Hong Kong and Milan fur fairs if good orders are written I think muskrats could advance some this season It just takes time for the buyers to realize the increase cost for garments because of the high mink prices, once that is factored into the picture muskrats should advance some and at least maintain that level. Quote;he even said to get the most out of them, leave a piece of tail on both sides for the hooks, old school (which I never have done) That is really old school... but it does help the dressers as they have something to grab when they are stretching etc in the process time.
One thing about it in the last sale... they did not go overboard in the medium sizes like last year and that pulled the averages down 2 bucks especially on fall rats that had not grown out yet.

The problem with thinking about advancing prices on rats It that most of the rats have been sold. So were SOL.
No comment on wood versus wire LOL

Beav, How many rats were in your $10.00+ avg. ? I only had a few dozen in the sale (all winter rats) and avg. $7. These were not huge rats, but nice.

Gibb rats at the next sale i would think have to go up.
Prices are still higher in the country by a good amount.
Maybe we will see some upward adjustments at your march sale.

Who says the big boys overpaid earlier randy.
You and I dont know what they know or what they are selling for.
I sold the last half of my rats the other day and it wasnt a heck of a lot off what the early higher prices being paid was.
I am led to believe that the may sales will be the highest priced of the year on rats. Thats a personal feeling.
its time to go catch some more but old man winter doesnt look like he wants to let go.
Oh well there are walleyes with my name on them.

you will find rats to be very easy to flesh and put up- mink not much harder. I use an old butter knife to do mine.

steve49 any that bought in the country and have sold to this point up North had to take less than their avg buying prices I would think? Not counting private sales but buyers selling on the auction, I hope your right for "some" of these buyers as if rat prices aren't better in May many would have done better selling local for sure. Not talking the large buyers but smaller buyers who where following the "lead" of others buying rats!
