which brings me to something I have zero knowledge insofar as facts, and really cannot even speculate- are more doubles 2 coyotes running together? or a case of 1 caught, then another comes along?
I don't have an answer for you, but its a good question.

It is interesting to read the comments of those who feel we are hopelessly falling behind while we are employing more people than ever and net worth is rising. I for one take calculated risks every day of my life but I don't look at Trump as a "calculated risk". I will take and support those that work hard to improve the base we have and the efforts we make to improve lives and standards of living for our citizens. There have been truly very few revolutionary presidents. I don't look at Trump being able to be a truly revolutionary president that moves us forward. TR was a Republican who believed in preserving natural areas, took on conglomerates that were price setting and abusing millions of workers. FDR a cousin and a Democrat was willing to use billions of US dollars to create government work programs because he believed that work created dignity for men and women and also that learning skills while working would pay back the nation multifold. There are people today that still feel he was just another bleeding heart socialist but look at the opportunity he created and the hole he allowed millions to crawl out of. He created a large federal government that went on to create a huge private sector and economic growth. I firmly do believe that many today just don't want that many of our citizens to be that successful. They believe there is only so much pie and they are unwilling to give up any of the slices they feel are theirs. They don't understand that to grow an economy the size we need for 420 million by 2050 we will need to make more pie, not carve up what we have today. For all those naysayers regarding growth just look at the growth we have had over the last say 15 years with the very low inflation rates we have experienced. Although slower than many might want it to be it is real growth and not inflationary growth. The real issue we face is there is a huge reluctance on the part of the very few with the very most as economic growth and a bit higher inflation hurts them more then the lower income and wealth holders so they have a natural inclination to control the wealth and keep those with less with less. Bryce It's funny you mention FDR Bryce. I would be willing to bet a fair share of today's Republican voters had parents and gandparents who were big supporters of FDR. Funny how the tide shifts.

Interesting thoughts on the peat moss trap covering. How convinced are you that it gives off an undesirable smell to canines?

That property "scrub" is a good idea. Why bother maintaining permission and setting up places that don't produce?

I will admit I am that way Steve. As I posted on one of these threads, might have been this one, I will often find something that works (dirtholes for canines, certain flies for trout, etc.) and come to rely on that set, lure etc.
I do try and force myself to try new things each year though. I always find myself playing around with a new lure, set, or whatever. The problem lies with my patience. For example when fly fishing I only give the new fly so long before I cut it off and try something else. Same with trapping lures or whatever. I know...I know I just need a bit more patience. Lol.
You are right, SE MN has some dandy trout streams!

How about an old cooler? You should be able to fit a few gallon jugs in the bigger sized ones.

I agree Steve. Given the current state of the fur market I suspect dealer attendance will be down at many of the bigger shows this year.

I would say the number of vendors was down. Clint Locklear, Dakota Line, Paul Dobbins, Bob Jameson, and Blue Ridge Trapping Supplies are just some of the dealers who attended last year, but were not in attendance this year.

Just checked, looks like 2 hours past Harrisburg, that'd be almost 6 hours total for me, one way. Wish I could. Take pictures and give us a report. Made it to the convention today. The attendance seemed light for a Saturday and the number of dealers in attendance was down a fair amount from last year. Several of the dealers I talked with mentioned sales being slow. All in all I had a good time. There were some deals to be found if a guy hunted around hard enough. F and T had some of the better deals on new traps that I saw. I managed to snag 1 dozen of the new Duke #2 Square Jaw offset coils for $80 from them. The guy then offered me 4 others that were left in a box for another $10, so I ended up buying 16 for $90. Normally they are being advertised at around $99 or so a dozen, so I thought that was a pretty good buy. It looks like a decent trap for the money.

I believe so much of coyote trapping is situational, how well a call lure / station may or may not work may have a lot of variables such as time of the year because of how plentiful food is spring vs. winter, another could be population densities, and another may be north vs south. I do believe that a good stink can put a coyote in the mood to seek out food no different than the smell of good food to humans but it has to be in the correct location. I think you are right about the situational part. Obviously a good food smell should appeal to an opportunistic predator like a coyote when hungry, but certain food smells may trigger them when relatively full as well. Lets use people for an example. Let's say you walking through a busy marketplace section of a major city. You may be full from a recently eaten meal, but suddenly you encounter a very appealing odor drifting out of an open air food stand. You probably won't go purchase food because you are still full from your last meal, but chances are you will take a moment and check out where the smell is coming from and what it is. I think coyotes/fox are similar. He may not be totally hungry, but a good smell can at least stop him and cause him to investigate a set. That being said, remember every person is a bit different in what they like and don't like. I would assume coyotes are no different. Certain foods may cause a stronger reaction in some coyotes than others. This is probably why a lure made of multiple ingredients generally does well. Different smells to cover different angles.

I plan to attend Ron. The past two years I have been stationed in PA, and have attended the convention each year. This will probably be my last one however, as I am being transferred next spring/summer time frame. All in all the PA convention is a nice affair.
As far as attendance goes I would imagine it will be down a bit, but still plenty of folks I am sure. Used trap prices seem to be holding pretty steady, despite the drop in fur prices. What I don't think you will see is the mass quantity of folks peddling dog-proof coon bait. In 2014 the tailgate section was covered with folks who were selling some variation of cat food soaked in fish oil or some other coon attractant. Last year far less of them, and this year I would imagine they are about non-existent given the very weak coon market.

Compromise has become the dirty word of politics. The sad reality is that the major political talk show hosts, representing both sides, will absolutely vilify anyone from their party who reaches across the aisle to try and accomplish something. These politicians aren't stupid, they know the power many of these political commentators have over their base. The last thing they want in a closely contested election year is to be getting repeatedly called out as weak by a political commentator who represents their own party. The result...political gridlock.
I find it humorous, and at the same time frustrating, that many who are so against political compromise are the same ones who continuously moan that politicians never get anything accomplished.

I have had exactly the opposite experience! No kiddin, the exact opposite! I tested the pipes twice, once with unknown scents as in actaul testing of scents that I do and the 2nd time, so as there would be no mistaken reaction, with two of my tested and time proven scents. The coyote AVOIDED them and I'm serious, I could easily see with the "proven" scents the coyote would actaully turn away and avoid them! I heard through the grapevine that the pipe set is intended for YOY, not adults. I don't know and don't care. It never fails to amaze me, the differences of experiences we have trapping!!
Now here's what I think is an interesting twist to the pipes. When I pulled all sets last Januaray I pounded-in 3 sets of pipes(6), lured them as if they were my working sets and never looked at them until mid-April. Of the 6 pipes I had 1 pipe with a few teeth marks and I don't know what chewed it, could have easily been a coon where that particular set was located. Concerning scent strength. I've used Setf's LDC in my walk-thrus and I'm here to tell you that when approaching from downwind I could smell that lure from 30yds-40yds away and I CAUGHT coyotes! Interesting. I tried the pipes last year as well, and I wasn't impressed either. That being said many other trappers have reported very good results with the set.
