I agree.
I would say that the larger fur buyers have already sold their fur before they buy It and know exactly how much they have to pay to make a profit. These buyers don't lose money In the fur trade. Now with that said once they have filled their orders they might speculate to some point. Have you ever wondered why your dealer pays higher prices for your early fur and then as the season gets toward the end the price goes way down while the fur Is better. They have filled their orders and are now speculating. Then they may put together a dealer lot with a high price attached to It and then let NAFA store It for nothing.

I probably have the WRONG outlook, but in my 31st season, I cannot help but feel this way:
An optimistic person by nature, selling fur, I am a pessimist.
In all my years, I have NEVER, EVER walked away from a fur sale and thought: "Man, did I ever make out!"
IN GENERAL, prices I recieve are AT or BELOW my expectations. And I have a good , quality-put-up product for sale.
Individual animals?
Sure, every year, I get surprised on certain pieces that go higher than expected.
But, OVERALL, I generally walk away feeling satisfied or slightly less than satisfied.....
Never jumping for joy.............I think it is just the nature of the beast. Not unlike legalized gambling, the house always wins.
Thank goodness I dont trap for the money.....heck, I just spent $1000-plus in gas to catch $2000 worth of fur (assuming a $20 nose count). That does not factor in any of my other expenses or time................
But I had a $million dollars worth of fun, and you can't take that away from me.........
I am fully aware of what I am doing and what I am getting myself into and am just plum grateful I can do it without sending us into the poor house.

that million in fun is true, unless you try to sell it for even 1 penny on the dollar instead of use it yourself . then you see it isn`t worth chit, just a saying. I always wonder since there are no truck espenses ( depreciation, actual repairs/maintenance), what does the gas go into? and the lures and pee and traps, where can one get that stuff free? and the vacation from the real job, how does one get another 3 weeks to take the wifey to florida? it`s scary when a guy thinks what he really pays for the privelage to trap. the long term picture and future for trapping is very dismal for that reason. with the demise of our live market here, I`m done in the east. that million in fun? , there has been a severe price roll back and devaluation there.

Geez Bob, taking the wife to Florida sounds like more expense and less fun than trapping! For Zags the trapping IS the vacation. It makes sense to me given that the goal of a vacation is to "unplug" and recharge the batteries.
And he did make a grand. He's have the truck no matter what. If everyone that owned a truck trapped there's be a lot more competition. He's also have the toys. In his case its jakes and pee. In others its golf clubs and cable t.v.. (Zags: if you have those too now is a good time NOT to mention them!)
You do need a bathing suit to go to Florida and you will eat in restaurants etc.
I've made money every day on the line this year - so far. Some days were good. Others were excellent. I certainly would not trade anything for Florida.
Me wife might have another opinion, though!

Bob I believe you should try to realize that we/me/some of us I should state, dream of the trapping year round lifestyle that began as a child no different than what I hear from reading articles about you and from you. But I will be the first to say I am not willing to do that although I can make money trapping for a few months or weeks in the fall I may struggle with the security I need to go about year round, that being said I state this, I look more forward to spending my time away from people, of which I have found for the most part I hate LOL, from behind the desk to recharge myself, my introverted self to be alone trapping. I envy people like u and waddell but I feel, as corny as this may sound, my higher power has a diff't goal I must follow right now, that being helping those in need, that is also a part of me I must fulfill. I believe others feel that way about themselves, someday I will be able to take more time to trap etc. but until then I am stuck here. I hope that helps from my perspective, no it is not about the money, traditionally the money was never there, in 1820 the beaver trappers overall never made alot of money compared to dangers, time, work, losing scalps, etc. it is a lifestyle some of us share with you for a few months, a few days or year round. Last time my wife wanted Florida I said go, she took our baby daughter and my motherinlaw. I stayed home, worked, and fished every night. THAT, is what I call a vacation.
You think trapping costs, try Florida. Yes, we do treat each other to special get aways together, just not right now haha.

What Bob needs to realize- is that all things aren't the same for all people.
and that you don't need to depreicate a $75,000 truck to trap, nor drive 3000 to begin...
so for the last time- LEAVE THIS ALONE
I promise I'll delete any repeat type posts- so don't cry when it happens.

Why is it that everyone that sells me stuff is screwing me because they want me to pay too much and everyone that is buying stuff I have to sell is screwing me because they want it too cheap? Go figure!

because non of them buy fur. and they are all genius and everyone else is dumb asses in their eyes. hey, what`s a 75 grand truck look like anyway? I figure a jacked up caddy with after factory 4 wheel drive and monster gumbo tires and the trunk lid tore off and a sofa chair in its place. I have a 3/4 ton super cab ford diesel 4 by 4 , loaded, and it was only 43 grand new off the lot.

To answer your question: that type of truck is called a "Dearitsunreal." It's made by Sofa King.
