Had a decent run on a marten line. Caught another marten, a few more weasels and a fisher after the photo was taken but I wasn't unloading the truck for another pic. The mink all climbed to get caught. Some climbed vertically! Others used a leaning pole. The weasels are not white. It's a little early for them but that's the way it goes. I might be changing the horizontal boxes to vertical next summer. I did not have to rebait a single vertical box. That's a time saver.

Very nice run. I'd guess that's the 3rd check? Think you said you'll have em all set after today, no snow, she's all downhill from here. And I'll bet you're A is draggin.

All the boxes won't be set. There are too many! Freakin' job gets in the way. The unset ones may get set if some other line gets pulled BUT the snow might be a hinderance for some.
I don't know how many are set. I'd have to check my notes but that run was off 35 boxes. It was a good run.

500$ days are always good days. You sure have a lot of white faces there in your genetics in the marten. Funny how mink can change to climber in one year and not the next. Have the mink changed from slale grey 1-2 to 1 st yet?

Well, maybe in a week or 2 things will slow down, give you a chance to set some more, and pull a some of the old sets, next time around. At least get into some new territory. Not sure, but that's a darn good catch/set ratio, it's gotta slack off. But I hope not. Roll on.

Have the mink changed from slale grey 1-2 to 1 st yet? We have good mink here. But I can't answer your question because my knowledge of fur classification is rather limited.

How many mink do you typically catch in these climbing type sets? What bait and lure are you using?
Thanks, Kelly

Kelly I think the mink climbing thing Is a Canadian thing. I trapped In Ontario for 7 weeks and we caught a fair amount of mink In our marten boxes. So I thought It might be worth a try In WI. Gave It a good test but never caught a mink.

Kelly: I don't get into numbers on the 'net. But it isn't a fluke thing. If the box is on a minks travel way it has a good chance of being skinned. Bait is moose scraps, grouse scraps, hare, duck .... I don't use lure unless it's cold. Then its XLDC. I haven't used any yet this year. Left the house in the dark in the rain. Ended it like this. First catch looked like this. Snow was just starting. Soon stuff was like this. Caught a couple of these today, too. That was nice. They are really strong animals. This one tested things out pretty well. Caught other species of fur, too. But the camera was getting wet and time was running. All told another good run.

College boy finally left the books long enough to come on a quick run. He's been very busy with his studies. I actually set HIS line and he can run it now. We caught fox, beaver, marten, weasels and a fisher. Here's a couple of photos.

Hey Musher. Do you catch many fox or cats In those boxes? When I trapped In Ontario we kept most of our boxes about 3' off the ground with open end on the top side. We caught 6 reds and 3 lynx when they reached In for the bait. Do you see and advantage to having the trap guarding a bottom opening In the box.
We had our boxes enclosed with 1/4" mesh on the bottom. My buddy explained that the birds hung on the mesh and picked at the beaver meat. The scraps they left on the ground attracted the voles and they attracted the marten. It seemed to work.

Never caught a fox in a box. Have gotten lynx on leaning pole/box sets. The vertical boxes are new so I don't have enough experience to comment.

A couple of different marten catches that happened today. This was a close one. With the old 120's it was lost. The mags get a tight grip on them! This is just kind of neat.

Bait. But it is breasted. I eat those, too. they won't let us use game animal parts for bait here so I have to waste all but the breast on my birds , I bet those bird carcasses are dynamite
