Bait. But it is breasted. I eat those, too. they won't let us use game animal parts for bait here so I have to waste all but the breast on my birds , I bet those bird carcasses are dynamite I like them! I also use moose trimmings. It depends what is in the truck. I have buckets of bait and grab a bucket and leave it in the truck until empty. Right now its grouse and hare. For catching marten and fisher I don't think that leaning pole or vertical makes a difference. However, I have not rebaite the vertical boxes yet. They have a blocked in place for the bait that cannot be removed. I've rebaited lots of horizontal. I've also had sprung trap on the leaning pole. Very rare on the vertical. I'm surprised that no one is overly impressed with the nose catch. A little more and it was nailed by a nostral I'm used to the mags and this catch still impressed me. If that marten hadn't had the wing in its mouth it would probably not have been caught. In an old 120 is was just a snapped trap..

I'm impressed with the nose catch too. I see you have your trigger wire on the top, inside jaw. (my mistake, you've got one inside/top, one outside top) In the last two pics, both marten were outside (or almost) of the trap when it fired, hard to tell from a picture, but I'd guess if the bait hadn't snagged the trigger, both would have been gone. Still bare ground, I see. Roll on. edit: attention to detail.

Do you eat mergansers when you are trapped in the wilderness to survive.......or on purpose?
Never heard of someone eating one of those sawbills........well, not more than once.
How high off the ground are your vertical boxes that the mink are hitting?

People that don't eat them might not have tried eating them!
The boxes are about chest high off the ground.

When you catch a martin, do you pull the trap, to place somewhere else or leave it. I caught one the other day in a coon pvc pipe set, first time trying this. Its the spot I caught the big coon (big for me anyway) and was wondering if it is a good location to try doing it on purpose.

When I was back home in Maine, I never moved a trap unless the marten was froze into it. Set where I thought martens should be and left them for the season.
