Thompson Snares is now owned and operated by a man in Missouri. I've met him (the new guy) in passing in a meeting and was impressed, he seems very intelligent and grasps the problems and impact of the BMPs.

Sinrud understood exactly the problems and concerns of the bmps.
something else to sit on a shelf to come back to haunt us.

what good have they done in general- in real terms, not could ofs?
And specifically what good have they done, with the coon bmps?
specifically on coon- GIGO
the coon bmps weer predetermined to have one result- they did. Call it politics, call it shenanigans call it whatever- it is what it is.
One bad apple has soured me on the bmps, because it showed, loud and definitively, that agendas lead to nonsense.
lulled us with a decent coyote bmp, screwed us with a predetemined coon bmp
I've come full circle- opposed them fervently when the idea was proposed, was lulled into the "they can do nothing but help trappers and they are coming, sit down and be quiet" mode, to reading the coyote bmp and thinking this is pretty good, then reading the coon bmp and thinking this is shite................to where I am today-
bmps aren't going to do me any favors, and if future ones are like the coon one, not to be either trusted or relied on
burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me.................

And so you tell me how your trapping practices have changed In the last 4 years do to the BMPS. I'll answer It for you not one Iota, nada nothing. Your still trapping coon the same old way.

I'm not the one that stated how much "good" bmps are doing-
you did.
what GOOD are they doing?

I'll ask again.
And so you tell me how your trapping practices have changed In the last 4 years do to the BMPS. I'll answer It for you not one Iota, nada nothing. Your still trapping coon the same old way.
You believe that your coon trapping system Is bullet proof when it comes to chewing. How many persons trap coon like you do? Not many.
So the coon BMPs were designed to be tested with the other 95% of trappers In mind.
Like I said It hasn't changed any ones life style when it comes to trapping.

But, as Steve said;
What good are they?
I have been reading the link Steve posted, and having a real hard time boiling it down in to anything that helps a trapper.
I'm only a third of the way through,or so, maybe I'll come up on it still.

The BMPs were used to apease the E U. That may or may not have been nessecary but so far It hasn't changed the way we trap. And since I haven't heard any rumblings about the US not being able to sell fur over seas I g uess It's didn't hurt us any.

mattd that is exactly why the US went it's own way and not to be roped into or felt the pressure you guys did because it is not only trapping for you guys but also all of the fur that goes thru CA, that would have been major for both US trappers and Candaian auction houses if the ban would have went through. Sinrud sold out why? Who will answer this one? Tman what good has come from the BMP"s ? A ton of good for trapping and trappers and nothing negative to this point and how many years have we been under the EU agreement? Selling fur for how many years? Nafa and FHA still wheeling and dealing why? The entire BMP process is why!!!!! First we have far,far more educated people on trapping, that is a fact. Next we have a list of traps that have passed a standerdization which was never accomplished in the past 150+ years of trapping!!!! WE have a base for new kids getting into trapping that shows what traps "could be used" not mandated but could be used with good success!!!!! We have brought about a ton of positive PR for trapping and trappers from this entire process not only here but abroad in the very countires that wanted to ban our fur, again fact. Those countries would have the same guidlines on injurys for any ranch fur as well. This has been a key point. WE have results that show what each trap will do for damage and efficantcy on a trap line. Is it ever going to be 100% agreed upon by ALL? No way that just don't work with trappers on anything let alone such a large undertaking as trap standerdiazation and the such. Now tell me what negatives have come from the overall process? I'm not talking the coon BMP as others have stated your setup is unique to the area in which "YOU" trap, not the overall majority. THe BMP"s as awhole have hurt you or any other trapper in what detailed way???

You did good 39 Your points were well made.
My biggest problem Is they didn't consider drowning In the BMPs. But overall I'm satisfied with what has been done.

beav you seem to do this a lot- bring up one point, then when caught on it, refuse to address it again, in stead scattering red herrings al labout-
YOU stated bmps did more good than bad- I asked you "WHAT GOOD" - twice
I'll take your no answers as answers
re coon bmps- to not allow entanglement was stupid. Not allow drowning? Good grief- you couldn't even HOLD a coon in water under the bmps
TC- you really want to link pious kneejerk repsonses like this A ton of good for trapping and trappers with "science"?
'tons of positive pr for trappers ? where? how? tons implys a real inpact? where? how?
saying something is so- doesn;t make it so
we have far more educated people in trapping, and thats a fact? thats not even a conidered opinion- read some of the forums
the only fact is- bmps have done nothing to help trappers
you don't have to live in MY AREA to understand entanglement, holding in water and drowning-
and you sure don't have to be in MY AREA, to understand how to write a protocal that would maximise coon chewing.... you just had to be on the bmp committee-
Next we have a list of traps that have passed a standerdization which was never accomplished in the past 150+ years of trapping!!!!
three exclamation points for this? my thought is so what? Who cares? does it mean newhouses are now vindicated as good traps or poor traps or still just Newhouses? Does it put more pelts on the wall to be "approved" vs not? My thought will be most trappers will go another 150 without knowing or caring.
want to wager a guess how many trappers have read the bmps?
500? 1000? 5000? I think 5000 is way inflated, but the point is the same- darn few

YOU stated bmps did more good than bad- I asked you "WHAT GOOD" - twice
Gary asked you twice, how has the bmp's made you change your technique's.
Personally I am neutral on them but as trappers we are going to need some science eventually to back us up.
With out it, science and facts that were obtained in a protocol, we are dead ducks.

Tman the knowledge gained is not for trappers per say but for those that set the rules and regs in each state, they are the ones to become educated on trapping far more from the BMP process, they will have more of a direct impact on your trapping than any other trapper period.
Tman 5,000 serious? I don't have the website hits where the bmps are located but I can tell you it far exceeds that, not uust trappers voters who have become more informed from the BMP process, this stuff has been widely advertised in magazines and in larger market areas to help educate those that could decide your future and mine in ballot intiatives.
SO what if traps have become standardised you can not be serious can you? Without that your minn coons would have little value period, if the US and Canada didn't come on board with this process the amount of fur sold and barteredin North America would have been severly hampered and the ranch markets of Europe would be ruling the fur market.
Any more as I have stated numerious times if you don't have data to back your claim in a court of law you stand a great chance of loosing, the anti's can petition the court and it is up to the State Game dpets to back the smack, having that makes things far better for trappers than back to the old beared guy snapping a 1.5 on his hand or just stating them thar traps don't hurt nothin.
With more educated Game depts from the BMP process we have strengthend trapping a ton when it comes to fighting the anti's.
The coon BMP is your sore spot so be it, but the bottom line is that BMP has done nothing and had zero effect on how you trap in your area, so hard to complain against something that effects you know why, shape or form correct?
They did consider submersion and talk about it in the BMP's, but the amount of time and cost and the fact that the thresholds are for live rstraint one would then need a whole new set of standards for drownding. Asking alot to be chewed off at one time just my opinion on that. Look in the BMP's and you will see submersion talked about.

The BMPs are becoming a growing problem for Nutria trappers, specifically some of the USDA trappers doing nutira eradification work. The BMPs are also having some negative affects on University studys being conducted and adopted into ICUC standards.
The Cable Restraint BMP continues to be an excellent example of how flawed some of these BMPs are. Both Pa. and Mo. DNRs recognised the problems with this BMP and changed their regulations from what the recomended BAD rating was (Cable Restraints "C. R.s" stood for "Catch & Release" until the BADs was significantly increased). There also was the problem with not including 1x19 cable in this BMP.
