This thread is solely for mind stimulation....so let's see what happens. We all know how complex a coyotes' nose is and how he can pick apart different ordors within a lure.Do you think......that a lure containing 8 or nine different proven coyote calling ingredients will cause a coyote to spend more time at a set vs a lure comntaining 3 or 4 ? Any theories ?

what makes you think he can pick apart separate smells in a lure, and not that blended many smells don`t just create one knew smell?

What made me think they can pick em apart is the dope dogs that can detect smells down to parts per million. Or so they said on the tv.

I don't know some times just urine works the best. explain that or is urine a complex smell?

While it's all speculation- and please, if you think its nonsense to post on posts like these, please don't and let the rest of us have some fun- I think they can pick them apart without any doubt.
Just as we can smell hamburger, onions and fries all on the same plate.
But Bob's thought I think is true also- that the combined ingredients produce a NEW smell that is unique. One reason while shaking is instructed before using.
Where is the break off? Don't know.
We take castor and tainted meat, and mix together, we for sure can smell both. Add honey, and you can smell all three. I've never added fish, but I suspect you could get that also.
But start adding a few drops of this and a few drops of that- and what blends and what is created, is unknown.
and as anyone using chemicals (or lure ingredients) knows the order in mixing produces different results.
But I do believe that a multi ingredient lure, does produce coyotes working a set longer. I cannot either prove or disprove that, but I think the more bells and whistles you got, the more he needs to see that elephant.
And I do know, by keeping records, that certain combinations of smells, does produce more. My best example is a popular skunky smelling call lure in one whole, and a good cat lure in the other. That combo far outproduces either used alone. I've kept records on it for several years, and others agree.
These are separate of course and not mixed, but the principle applies of multiple scents.

yes, sometimes just urine works well.
Let me ask you this- do you use just urine at most of your sets? If not, why?

I feel a good formulated 3-4 ingredient lure with work just as well or better than a poorly formulated 8-9 ingredient lure.......
Yes, I feel a coyote can pick apart what is in a lure to an extent......some of these smells may not be recognizable to a coyote....thus curiousity.......some ingredients are not in a coyotes natural environment so it is a NEW smell....and if it is something that triggers excitement, passion, digging, etc. it is a good thing......

On an animal planet show the other night, they where talking canines smelling capabilitys, and said a dog will actually form somewhat a picture in his mind, based on what he smells, of his surroundings. I think we all underestimate how acute a canines sense of smell is most of the time.

Well, hopefully it wont spook them... Over the years, like most guys, I have tried a lot of lures and baits and have had a lot of product given to me to try out. I can say I have had luck with just about anything I tried. Still, in an effort to streamline things, have really tried to narrow down the amount and types I use over the years. So, I took about 30-40 different lures and baits.....full bottles down to a couple of drops, and mixed them altogether. I split them up into two different gallon jugs, each having a different meat-based-bait in them. So, I have two FULL gallons of this lure/bait, both being different from the other. I called them Everything and Everything II.......I drew up a label which was simply a drawing of a kitchen sink...... Not for sale within 1 mile of my house......... Seriously, after smelling this goo, I think it smells pretty darn good.....but what do I know, I am not a coyote. My sense is that like just about everything else I try, I will do just fine with it. Which I am sure is totally insulting to a lure maker.......it'd be like mixing white wine with a red. Sacreligious, yes, but the end result would be the same.....a good wine buzz. Zagman

zag, I did the same thing with about 25 years worth of freebies, buys, left overs etc. only I just made one giant batch, not two. I`ll never be able to recreate again nor wll anyoneelse forever and ever. as they say about trapping meetings when they are over( cough cough), now it`s history!

No i don't go with the theory that urine is a fear remover , human sent cover , etc. I use urine as i would any other lure some times by its self and some times in combination but not at every set. I also should add that if i feel i have a trap or should i say lure shy individual in an area i use just urine. So actually if you think about it i am contradicting myself , save the urine for the trap shy and in the mean timemay be i would have already caught him . who really knows also i don't claim to catch the number of coyotes that most of you get, but i feel that for the amount of effort and area i do well. greg

"Spraying a combination of different animal urines in the hunting area confuses coyotes and often makes them drop their guard." Quote from SCENT CONFUSION, an article in the August 2007 issue of PREDATOR XTREME magazine contending that a coyote's capacity to process odors can be overloaded, essentially disabling it.

Seriously, after smelling this goo, I think it smells pretty darn good.....but what do I know, I get a kick out of the people that smell a lure, then say it a great lure.See it often at conventions, and furbuyer shops. Don't get me wrong,I smelled hundreds of bottles myself. And if I live long enough, will most likely smell a few hundred more.I probrbly smelled a hundred different bottles of pro's choice on purpose, pretty certian I now know what it smells like.

If a coyote has such a well developed olfactory sense and can distinguish multitudes of odors then what is 8 or 9 as compared to 1, 2 or 3 and 4? If their sense is that good on whiff of 8-9 smells and that is logged in their knowledge bank and the novelty is soon gone. If the combination would cause more "working" at the set then there may be value in my mind, but than to me can be done with putting scents in different locations to cause more movement. Smelling to me does not mean catching as much as getting the animal to move around at the set.

Phil, you are right......lure is a lot like duck decoys.......decoys and their look tend to appeal to the gunner more than the ducks.
I have witnessed the convention-bottle-opening thing too.....I like when guys start guessing what's in the bottle.....
Like to see them guess what's in EVERYTHING II.....

i say yes they will work a set longer with the 8-9 different ingredients but i say they will work 2 ingredients harder and longer. if, in a deeper hole than the 8-9.
I firmly believe what Bob always says QUOTE:if you got in the hole what they want then they will stay until they get it .( in a nutshell)
