Is it possible to breed with the goal of having a small litter (1-3 pups)?

no
well...yes to a degree- the older the bitch, many times the fewer pups.
some believe that you can breed for sex, based on time of breeding.

I usually breed my dogs soon as they will stand and have been having only 2-3 pups.But if I want a larger litter give the stud a buffered asprin and hit her about every 2 days till the end of the cycle.

I usually breed my dogs soon as they will stand and have been having only 2-3 pups.But if I want a larger litter give the stud a buffered asprin and hit her about every 2 days till the end of the cycle. PERSONALLY I leave the breeding up to the male dog(MUCH better results)...I tried my hand at breeding fish once.... kept KILLIN the little buggers...  |

the female is ready or not- and if ready, we have no control over how many pups conceived.
given 1 day to breed, the 12th was my choice- 2nd breeding, the 14th.

Steve: I was wondering about that.
Given that the sperm can live for three days, if the female is bred early she should have fewer eggs in her ready to conceive. Bred very late in the cycle some of those early eggs might be past due.
Breed her with an old male and he might be shooting some blanks that would also limit success.
All of the above is pure speculation on my part. Any opinions?

for sure you can have eggs ready at different times- AKC used to register pups by 2 differnt males out of 1 litter.
I guess, you could try breeding real early- like the 8-9 day and hope the sperm are viable enough to "wait" for the eggs.
then you run into the troubles with breeding a bitch that won't stand- usually, when she will stand, she's ready and thats usually from 10-15 day, going VERY roughly. And then do you breed only that once, and hope she catches? if paying $250 for a stud, I want maximum shot at it- cause busy studs are 1 shot more times than not-
I suppose that its not impossible- but if you want a smaller litter for whatever reason- breed her when shes' older. I think your chances would be better then.

The female I thinking of is 11! She's in heat NOW!
I don't want 7 pups. I want a couple! And I'm not good at culling.

musher- has she had any previous litters and if so, how many pups? if shes had a few, and the numbers have beene smaller, then good chance she would only have a couple- BUT- I've had some females that had 7-10 pups every little all their life.

I just finished breeding her Well, not me but a male dog!!
She's had several litters. I don't know the average because I've had her for a year. The last litter she had was 6 2 years ago. She's the mother of my broken leg dog.
"She" is right off Jeff King's sled. He won the Wisconsin Pedigree stage/stop race with her almost a decade ago.
The male is a good alaskan. Real leggy. I have 2 brothers and I didn't know which to select. The one I wanted was a little larger with better fur. He also eats less. The brother is smarter, a leader, and he wanted her real bad. I gave the brother a half hour in the pen. He couldn't connect. I put my original choice in and they were plugged within a couple of minutes. Funny thing is he didn't even seem to know she was in heat before I put him in the pen.
In this instance being smart and wanting to get laid bad wasn't enough!
I'll let you know what happens in 63 days.

I was schooled in doctoring and dog breeding by one of the best known pitbull men that ever walked the earth.He was world wide known.I just go by what he told me and it worked with patterdales.

braveheart- while I can see the logic in way early breeding doing this- your chances of missing are also great.
but I will say that breeding them every 2 days, will not increase the pups. multiple breedings only increase the chances of conception, not pups.

I can see missing the conception if to early.The every 2 days gives more eggs to hit and if hot like it is now you need all the help you can get.When real hot my male wasn't a very good straight shooter he always had small litter's except in early spring or early Fall.But thay was him.

I thought that multiple breeds increased the possibility of larger litters. One shot is all my female is getting.
Tman: It is a good breed. The pups will be very good sled dogs. they should be fairly fast and good for distance.
But I don't want many of them! Since I'm not a racer, they will not sell like hotcakes. The difference between a $3000 dog and a $100 dog is less than a minute over 10 km's. And these will be distance dogs.
Most people do sprint races. 20 km distance or less at speeds that approach 40 km an hour. You gotta hurry, ya know! You might see something or miss a t.v. show if you're out too long!
These dogs would be able to do that but they 40 an hour is pretty fast. They will be more for 25 for longer distances.
I'll swap a pup for a jagd pup, though!
