lynx, those of us that have been out at 30 below or more know you can not expose bare skin at all, not even for 1 second.

[edit] Climate Stanley has cold winters and mild summers. Even in the middle of July, it is not uncommon for the low temperature to approach freezing. [2] An Associated Press article referred to Stanley as "routinely the coldest place in the lower 48 states,"[3] though the average high temperature in the summer is well above most western coastal cities

no biggy lynx, none at all. I`ve seen 1 foot of snow july 4th while denning. it just isn`t remarkable in the weather dept. no one is. it gets bad all over. 105 in ks summer trapping is no piece of cake either. you put a 30 below nut in your mouth? lol, that`s a good `un.

Lynx I wouldn't admit to putting a nut in your mouth. That's worse than losing your words from being out to long.
Did ya ever hear the one about the old Chinaman?
Miner in the Yukon came in and went to the saloon, says you got any whores? Barkeep say no just the old Chinaman upstairs. Trapper says I don't go for that shite and goes back to the trapline.
Next year he comes out and asks the same question, gets the same answer, and goes back out.
Next year comes in, same question, same answer. But this time says man I've gotta have something so OK get me the old chinaman.
Barkeep tells the bouncers to go upstairs and get the old chinaman, next thing they bring this guy down kicking and screaming. The miner says whats wrong with him?
Barkeep says, ya see the old chinaman don't go for that shite either!! lol!!

Good one. Version i heard was a little different. When the miner decides he has to have something, he asks how much? Barkeep says $500. Miner says sounds kinda high to ##$2@$ a chinamen.
Barkeep says, ........yeah, but $400 of it is for the two guys holding him down. Chinaman don't go for that sheet either.
Gene Tracy truck stop tapes as a kid. lol
Here's another for the western boys. Guy strolls into a dusty desert town and immediately sees a guy chase down a coyote and have his way with it. Then, as he walks into the bar and looks around, he sees an old guy at a table whacking it.
Sheriff happens to be at the bar, and the newcomer asks what the hell's up with this place........... first a man chasing down a coyote, now this old man over here playing with himself?
Sheriff looks at him, and says, ........well, you don't expect that old guy to catch a coyote, do ya?

Lynx's comments about being freaked out his first year in that back country is interesting.
Very few people have experienced it or have any idea. Those that have tend to give it up fast. Don't go back. Too much fear.
I met a young trapper in the spring of 80. He was skinning rats in his tent at Ruby Marsh, NV. Had finished a very successful season cat trapping. Over 40. Had some coyotes too. And was finishing on rats. All fur was sky high, the height of the boom.
Said he wasn't going back again next year. Said he was going to get a job in town. Had a far away look in his eyes, like he'd seen a ghost.

30 below in one spot is not the same as 30 below in another. Relative humidity makes a huge differnece, as does a wee bit of breeze. I'll take 30 below in my neighborhood anyday over the same temp back in the midwest where I grew up.

Spend some time on the ocean and you'll feel that way a lot.
I like the lonesome part of trapping the backcountry, best times I've spent in life.
