FIRST page news..... Attention Nonresident Trappers: Nonresident Idaho trapping license allows you to trap only those species that your home resident state allows nonresidents to trap and that there is an open season for those species in Idaho. ok boys, I called headquarters and talked to the assistant h.e. nonresidents can trap cats in idaho as long as your state sells a non resident lisc, even if you have no cats in your home state. he is going to run it by the a.g. next week when he gets back and get back to me if it is any different. he had the regs and codes right there and was very knowledgable. he said they are nebulous( the regs) but the intent was not to seperate out species, only not sell a non res lisc if the otherstate didn`t allow it. he did tell me quotas may be in the future. 208-334-3735

lynx, he explained ( the above in yellow)it didn`t mean we couldn`t trap your cats, . what it meant is if for examle indiana had cats and allowed our residents to trap them, but non residents not, then it kicks in. as long as we don`t prejudice non residents here , idaho doesn`t there.

Be interesting to get a lawyers interpretation of that regulation. If it was me and I intended to trap cats I'd still like to have that opinion in writing. Especially if I was planning on transporting them back to my home state. Sometimes people have terrible memories about things like this.

I would believe that Bob...HOWEVER if your state has a 1 cat.... or a 4 cat... OR a 6 cat limit...that ALSO applies... I asked Kemner this morning ... didnt ask about your scenario...but the QUOTA part DOES apply... prevents Ore or Ut people from "laundering" cats. As he put it. It's gotten BAD enough that they ALMOST put a quota in Idaho to prevent it... or limit it as best they could... HENCE the reciprocity on QUOTA/LIMITS application.. lynx

Does Iowa allow non-residents to trap bobcats? As far as I read the regs, you can trap otter and bobcats as a non-resident. All it says is, a licensed furharvesters license and habitat stamp. Otter= 2 and Bobcat=1 until quotas filled.

Word has it that Utah is seriously considering cutting their quota from 6 to 4.

I've been trapping in WY for years both for cats and marten as a nonresident. The reciprocal law is a statute passed by the state legislature and states in effect in Wyoming a non resident can not trap for a species if their own state discriminates against nonresidents for that species.
In Indiana, residents and nonresidents are treated alike with regards to cats and marten ( no trapping). So you can trap those species in WY. If you lived in Montana and wanted to trap cats and marten in WY you would be out of luck. Montana doesn't allow nonresidents to trap cats and marten. I would suggest reading Wyoming's statute for yourself. Alot of people in the Game and Fish Dept don't understand it.
