I think what happened was otter were advancing- and buyers thought the market would continue to advance, and common sense was outweighed by the chance of big profits.
auction frenzy
In other words, they gambled and lost.
Those that sent to the auctions, gambled also.
I fele for anyone that has otter or indeed any fur unsold-
don't know what the solution will be- but with more and more states opening otter seasons, I don't see any change soon.
the question is- will those otter ever be sold for the futures price?

There is a market for those otter, it's just a matter at what price level. Currently NAFA is trying to protect the dealers that got stupid and paid so much for these otter in the country by holding them for a better price to lesson the fianancial blow to these dealers.
My personal opinion is that the otter market will eventually return but....It may take five years to do so. For some of this is a good thing, we were working the otter populations to hard and they need a chance to recover.

I agree with them being hit hard and need a chance to recover I could really see it on my line by having to travel more and more to keep my catch up.As far as the buyers being stupid they didn't see it coming.I know for a fact a country buyer in my area got a call from a NAFA agent in late feb after the hot sale and said the otter were hot and not to hesitate about sinking 100 to 125 dollars in a good size pale ottter. This same buyer averaged over 170 bucks in Feb so it looked safe to him and would have to me to.Another large buyer in NC who usually has between 2000 to 2500 got smoked also he had a chinese buyer who came directly to his warehouse he to never saw it coming.I have no problem with NAFA holding for a good price but after awhile somebody is gonna have to bite the bullet

robert, my otter catch this year was non-existent, so I will not hold them, I decided to go with FHA this year. If something doesn't turn around by the early auctions next season, I am considering not even trapping next year except for a few bobcat and fox.

i have much bigger plans but it does not include much fur trapping. the price has to be right for fur trapping. very little fun for me trapping beaver and otter, serious! maybe you guys get a big kick out of it, but the high price otter market is what was carrying me in the water. the only traps I sold recently were traps I will never use again.

the teasing doesn't bother me. if it did, I wouldn't keep coming back. I will tell you that the days of free beaver are over here with no high price otter market. It may take another year or two to catch on, but eventually it will be time for the people with problems to pay and pay big!

if you have a strong fox market, i don't blame you, but with a weak fox market and no otter market, i have little reason to go hard unless being paid.

Give me a 30.00 AVERAGE on my beaver and I'll be a happy camper. Most won't chase them for that and it increases the ADC calls.
Thirty buck coupled with 2 feet of snow, ten below and 2.50 gas would be perfect.

LMAO DOOM AND GLOOM DOOM AND GLOOM. When the fun Is gone sell your traps and get out.
I'm glad I still enjoy it and have a pretty good full time job that allows me too.
Yeah tony us northern beaver trappers are cocked a little off.
I'll still chase them for 20 bucks just cut my catch by 2/3.
What the heck else do I have to do in the winter. I'm not going to sit around feeling sorry and not trap. I'm not going to watch tv.
Cant make much money.
So what.
Dont trap. This is the first spring in years I wont trap a beaver. I'm having a blast ice fishing. Went out today. April 14 standing on 3 feet of ice. Gods country.
It dawned on me the other day when I was driving north of Winnipeg to go ice fishing(now you know I'm crazy a guy from northern Mn going even further north to fish) that I was pulling more money behind the truck than the truck was worth.
Trapping is a bargain.

Ill keep trapping at least some even when we go through the hard times. I couldnt afford to maintain the longlines for a while but kept going as long as I could after so many quit and the old timers were gone. I lost a considerable ammount of permissions, then found out we lost the right of ways too. There is always a way to keep going as long as we can within reason for something we like as much as this. I like to specialize in mink and cats but I have to say it has been easier for a while to make money with less gas on the mixed bag lines. When I ran 2-300 miles of pretty much straight mink lines with mostly footholds the nontargets made up 2/3 of the money. I didnt pass up good pockets of rats close to the road. Now its mostly beavers and otters so Im working on time saving anchoring systems for them too.

The biggest problem trappers face today is getting the general public to understand the service that we provide and that this service is valuable
Its also getting ourselves to realize we provide a valuable service.
I'm am guilty of it myself. Many times when out trapping I will get a will stop and ask if I will trap some for him or someone will hear I am in an area and get word to me he has a problem.
I've never charged anyone yet.
Probably a good time to start.
