Want to build some Pennsylvania legal beaver snares. What locks should I buy?

cam locks suck, if they get wet they will freeze. slim locks suck, i could never get them to work right. I make my own out of fender washers I use 3/8" x 1.25" and I drill a 1/8" hole in each side in metal between hole and edge. I then put it in a vise and bend it 45 degrees at top of big hole with one 1/8" hole at dead top center. place the 1/8" hole on short end of lock on drill bit with v towards drill, hold lick with pliers, start drill fast and pull lock off leaning toward bit away from drill. place on a good loaded snare, they are fast as greased lightning and hold like no lock I have ever seen. I will try to do a drawing on comp and send it to ya.

if you found that the slim locks sucked- I'm suspecting you are using them wrong.
They are good enough that rk660 orders a bunch each year, newt sterling puts them on ALL his snares.
I sell a lot of them to experienced snaremen...snaremen that have snared for decades...that tells me a lot.

then, please, explain in detail hoh to use them properly. I have tried using the on top, on bottom, loaded, un-loaded, with bend in end of cable, without bend, with burr, with burr removed. I will say that it worked best with burr removed, but it cost me way more and took the same amount of time to prepare as my own locks. I even put up the slim locks, I haven't been able to find them since then, lol.
I will try them again if I can figure out how to use them. maybe it was the cable. Should it be used with 7x7 3/32" cable or should I use 1x19 cable instead?

Hope this helps. This was set up for coyote but never used cause we didn't get our snaring on land. I've just used them a few times on beaver w/o problems. both end of the cable go through the bottom- the long one through the tang- the stop end throguh the other hole on the same side. Rally curls the last inch of the cable before the stop.

Yeah, Dave, the way I understand canines will be 3/32 as well. Guess that means some coyote chew outs, eh? ;D

I doubt it as long as you use an extenssion cable in an area wher it won't get all tangled up (which would be illegal anyhoo) lol.

I actually do really well with cam locks on beaver. I also use BMI Minis on mine rigged just like Steves. I have caught many beaver in snares with all types of locks but I like the BMIs and cams the best. Don

foxcatcher1, where are you from? well the question is do you have to deal with freezing much? The reason I don't like the cams is is they get wet they will freeze and will not lock when they are supposed to. I have never caught a beaver with one but I just did not like that.

Steve, is it just me or am I looking at that pic wrong. It makes no sence to me. You have the lock on top?
I like the slims to but dont put them together like that.

I like the slims as well for both beaver and coyotes, I use choke springs on alot of my coyote snares in open areas, the slims are a smooth operating lock and on 5/64 work excellent for beaver and coyotes. The only minor draw back is you do get wear on the tab with a hard fighting coyote or two and occasional beaver, so just check them after each catch and if there worn pitch them, the beauty is the cost and there low profile, there a good lock. Work well with bads I might add too. P.S. I like them better on the 7x7 versus the 1x19, for the 1x19 being a slicker cable I like cam locks with teeth filed in them, for coyotes.

I'm from the land of Bob Wendt. Indiana. If it's freezing out my snares are totaly under ice so not a big freezing problem there. I can't use cams on dryland so no problem there. If it's the freeze but no ice on the water kind of deal I change to under water sets so they will be in place when it does freeze. I have yet to have a problem with the cams but if a lock is frozen shut it's going to be frozen shut no matter what lock it is.

Chris- it's ALWAYS just you... ;D
The pictures were just to show how the cables went into the lock- I have them twisted to try to show that.
As far as how they are put together- Rally set it up- I don't have a clue.
Do yuu do it different? If so, by all means tell me how.
