I thnk 9 out of 10 trappers would have 9 different answers.
I know what my answer is- Cachottier- no doubt about it.

The usefulness of That answer Depends on how many you have tried , if you only have experience with a few how good is the answer. Anyway with that in mind i really like the cachottier, but have never used o'gormans, so you see where we are at. greg

I know a guy that puts power river paste bait in a tree or a smear on a tree and snares the trails coming to the bait.He catches more coyotes a year than most dream about.

I have to admit, I tried not to catch Coyotes last year and caught 1. This year, I kept catching them in tight walk throughs and cubbies! Its crazy. I figured if there is that many, I better cull a few out. Bought some Powder River Paste Bait at a dirt hole and just keep catching them. I caught around 30 real quick. I'm always buying new stuff to see what is good. Right now, that is one I will buy every year. (We are talking about Coyotes)
OOOPS, I forgot this thread was about "Call Lure." Stuff works real good by itself though.

Cachotier is a great lure...but wouldnt put it as my best "call lure".. . dont know really what I would put there... have used numerous with good results. Cachotier is too runny for me to use as a call lure...I prefer something pasty for this. Didnt hit the fox/coyote this year but will have to "re juice" my Cachotier before next season...kinda mellowed out on me. lynx

Depends on the critter, for me.
I like skunk for cats, and in some cases for coyotes. I've noticed that it also depends on what is incorporated with the skunk. Just guessing here, but skunk seems to be a carrier of other odors, if used correctly.
Having said that, I've noticed that grey fox, in my country, aren't particularly interested in a skunk smell. For them, it would be fish or castor, but if I combine the skunk with fish and/or castor, I get the long range response I'm looking for.

CALL LURE...not just lure...a call lure is used to GET them to the set so the "LURE" at the set can get them...

I continue to review the success of lures I use and I dont understand why I continue to be marveled by the fact that I continue to catch the most fur with the lure that I use the most!
Call NASA!
I have had tremendous luck with just about any commercial lure I use.....I think the better I became at picking location (let alone, setting on tracks) the less dependent I was on a lure "calling them in from 1/2 a mile!"
The first year I used Cachottier, I used it at one of the sets at EVERY location I double set and had tremendous luck with it....
However, I cannot look a man in the eye and state that I would have had less luck with Gusto, or Canine Call, or LDC, or even pure skunk......
So, for me, it then gets down to ease of use.....I, too, like a thick lure.....or paste. I prefer it to be like peanut butter or even vaseline in consistancy. While I generally put all lure right at the set, there are times (like cat trapping this year) that I like to put it up high.....for this application, the thicker the better.
I have pleaded with Stef to make it into a paste....but lost the battle, as Steve was telling him to THIN it! LOL.....guess who won? I even asked to put it in a bottle with a small opening (a bottle that I HATE) to make it an easier pour and less messy) Strike two!
So, while I agree its a great lure, for me, it's too thin, and tends to get all over the side of the bottle, possibly on the trap pattern, then on my hands, clothes, on my noon-time apple, my dogs, the inside of the truck, my girlfriend (ooops).....LOL
Joking....some say we need to slow down.....but alas, it's always what works best for US in OUR situtation.....and for me, a thin runny lure (ANY thin runny lure) gets replaced with something that I find to be more user friendly......

WELL said... I had a friend go out with me couple weeks ago...traps the SAME canyon just on the reservation...ACTUALLY I went with him first.... I picked out a location and made a set for him to show how I did it.... in the last 2 checks he's caught 2 cats...BOTH in the set I made...NOTHING in 30 plus other sets. I've taken 22 in the last two weeks off the same area...LOCATION...LOCATION...LOCATION.. once one learns to THINK like the animal they are trapping...that's 99% of the battle. lynx

I've long told stef to offer it both ways...
I have no doubt you are right- However, I cannot look a man in the eye and state that I would have had less luck with Gusto, or Canine Call, or LDC, or even pure skunk......
and I agree.
But I also believe that even though several lures might get the same results- side to side testing shows definite patterns as to what is worked more, first, whatever- but over time, one lure will outproduce others...
and after a cold spell or a rainy day or that odd coyote....certain lures will give you a few more at the end of the year.
lynx- I was waiting for someone to mention call lures as high up, away from set lures- and I disagree and agree. I do if visuals aren't right, use a lure a little higher up at the set- say 4-6 inches up on a weed backing or some such.... but I'll put that same lure down the hole too.
also lynx- if you like the real skunky lures- XLDC is as skunky as they come.

Steve well said...the topic being call lures... the XL would definetly fill the bill. I use MOST call lures high but many times not...ALL I care about is the wind/breeze being able to pick it up...hence NOT down a hole...but oftentimes no more than a foot or two off the ground. lynx
