Trappnman, No bias, conspiracy,or nefarious intent involved on my part. Wouldn't know John from Darwin. I would like to visit with him though if you have the contact info. Let me reemphasize, emphatically, that if I was to engineer a perfect trap, it would resemble the Montana. And would buy one hundred of them tomorrow if they would hold as well as a #3 Bridger. Did a test today, put a 1 x 2 stake in a Montana and an old #3 Northwoods purchased back in the 80's. both of them with offset jaws. The Northwoods has never had the springs changed on it. Both traps hooked to the baseplate. Using a scale. it took 100# to pull the stake from the Northwoods. In like manner it took only 60# of pull to remove it from the Montana. Multiple times on both traps. Did the same with several other traps to obtain a baseline; 1.75, 2, #3 longsprings etc. I know its not an animals leg and animals don't carry stakes or screwdrivers. Shoot the messenger if you must. However, it is a straight pull test using the same medium and with repeatability. This is the last post I'll make on this issue. Here is the Montana pic; Here is the Northwoods pic; Respectfully, gunny

gunny, Put that scale on a coyote foot and try to pull it out of different traps. I would love to see the results.
I never used or really tinkered with the Montanas enough to comment...but I will say this.
Just because a few trappers have success or failure with a trap does not necessarily make it a good or bad trap. Methods, conditions and just plain luck may play into it.
