this site is full of dirt trappers so i thought i`d ask your thoughts on lures or baits that make canines dig, triggers a digging response.
do you like them?
what makes them dig in your area? a tainted lure or bait...a more rotted down type lure or bait, or a musk and essence type lure...or a more fresh type meat bait
why do you think they dig for it?

YES- I want a canine to WANT to dig- and slobber, and drool and want to tear the set apart. I was once told that this was the mark of an amateur trapper- and I had to explain that I didn't WANT the coyotes to dig....but I wanted them to WANT to. Hopefully- he will walk into my trap first. As to what causes the digging response- certain odors definitely trip their triggers more than others do. Castor evokes digging. Never saw where just tainted meat cause much- that usually gets a rolling response, not a diggin response. simply because it is true, I'll say this- Cachottier provokes a digging response unlike any other lure I have used. If you are interested in the subject, Logan has a publication showing what ingriedients do what. www.aphis.usda.gov/ws/nwrc/is/98pubs/98-66.pdf

I don't want my canines digging at the set so many things can go wrong. Pulled out traps buried traps,Iv'e had 6 and 7" of dirt pulled out over my traps no way your going to connect In that situation. When a animal digs It digs with both feet In the hole It's hard to catch em like that. But If you get them coming In no problems. I'll have to think on what lures and what type of bait causes this reaction.

Of course beav- no one WANTS them digging.
Catchem' first... ;D
Why are your canines digging before they step on trap pan? A properly presented and guided set should have their foot in the trap before the foot gets to the lure hole.

I have tested tainted beaver and fresh beaver and a few different lures, dug a row of deep dirt holes about four feet apart. kept a record so I knew what was in what hole, they dug out the fresh beaver only. I have been using 99% dirt holes with fresh beaver ever since. Have got some lure from Steve at the FTA maybe will will make another test this Sept. Jim

Very Interesting post & responses so far. Based on my limited experince,I had my best dig &set workin deals after middle Dec. with slightly tainted rabbit & dab of castor or Canineselect. I kinda like a diggin response even if I miss the k9 at that set &time ,I feel I can catch it down line or at same set next night or so. Its the dang coyotes droppin turd near trap response that hurts my head,I know thats been discussed b4 & another post, Daryl

why do you think they dig for it? Either cause they want to eat it or roll in it. I think a majority of lures/baits sold are not intended to be eaten by the animal (or me! ;D) Any bait with a rotten smell will cause digging if placed in a deep hole, why, because they want to get it out to take a bath in it. Ive had some gland lures cause digging and rolling. Beaver castor sure does cause a digg response. I think any lure, placed in a hole, that they want, will cause digging, simply cause they want to get to it out.

Like Steve said, the key is to cuff em before they get to diggin! Back to whether or not I like a digging response, I like any kind of response! Be nice if there was a lure that caused a "skin themselves" response! ;D

If I made the perfect set everytime and caught every animal as It approached the set I would write a book. There are no perfect set ups and you will not catch every animal as It investigates the attractor,so you are going to get dug up sets.

Beaver meat(fresh or tainted), castor, sac oil, moose, deer and woodchuck(tainted), fishoil, and others I can not recall at this time. If the hole is deep they will dig for a wide variety of smells.

good post vttrapper,
i just started using some fish oil and shellfish oil last season on some beaver meat and loved it early. they will dig at it very well when they wont other things and our picky and not working sets well.
paul dobbins has came out with a bobcat meat bait with fish oil in it i think will be great early as it`s mild smelling to me, i`m going to run it with some loganberry type lure and see what happens when yotes are not doing sets well. going to try persimmon oil also...lol..see how many possums i can catch.

Pressed fish oil will make K9's dig to China. Most trappers look at you funny when you say that to them. Too stubborn to get out of the mink and coon and fish hang up. Their loss. ;D ;D
Rat musk will make them dig too.
If I miss a K9 or 2 and see that hole blown out 4x it's original size - that's OK. I know what's down the hole is working. He'll probably be back anyway. Maybe. ;D Terry

Terry,
Already tryed the fish/skunk combo and it worked fine on k9s as well as fisher. I have been reading on egg and synthetic egg. I figured since a friend of mine tosses away a dozen or so eggs every day, I t would not hurt to experiment.

Some very good information here. Thinking back a few years I had used fish oil with some bait down the hole. IT worked quite well, I bought more oil, but never used It?? Quess i'd better get on the stick. Collected some fryer oil for use when snaring coyotes In the winter. Tried this down a few holes and It got dug out quite well. The ground was froze and the oil turned white. This helped to see If the coyote or fox where digging at It. No possums or coon in the area. All dirt holes are along logging roads.

fish oil is indeed a good changeup on coyotes. Stef sent me some seal oil to try last fall, and with limted use caught several coyotes using it.

Straight shellfish oil works great on grey fox and reds but never had much luck with coyotes working It.

I think that digging is the most important reaction a trapper could want at a K9 set. It simply tells me that my lure is good enough that the K9 wants to get at it.
I have had good hole digging response with a homemade bait I make with Dobbin's bait solution. I have had fox dig for Pro's Choice as well.

Spring muskrat glands.
T-man: What did you think of the tenacity of the seal oil?
