I just received today, new media tools from IAFWA on the BMP's and trappers ed, so far what I have seen as has been excellent! They have out for instructors a DVD on Pelt Preparation which is excellent showing step by step pelt prep, they have out The Trapper ED documents which will be on line very soon! Showing instructors guide and student manuals, and a trappers Ed Video series which goes even further than their first video series on why we trap and other topic's as well. So far some of the very best PRO trapping media tools I have ever seen.
Also as a side not I took over the weekend a Hunter ED instructor seminar and asked how many of the 20 or so present taught even 30Min's of trapper ed in their course as it is covered in the IHEA booklets and without amazement not a single one raised their hand and stated they have offered much of anything to do with trapping in their hunt ed classes!!!! Thats a scary deal for any state that has NO Trappers Ed, these children and adults who come to hunters ed what not a better way to enlighten them on trapping even if they don't set a trap on how much misinformation that could be changed about trappers and trapping! If you know of a hunt ed program see if they cover trapping and if they use the IHEA manuals and see if you can become involved!

The IAFWA, IHEA is another organization that helped with this as well. Funding came from the USFWS,IAFWA, and also Wildlife Restoration is mentioned too. I don't think you have one author. Jim Wentz of silver tip productions is listed as primary author, that company also did a hunter ed DVD for IHEA a very well respected org with 70,000 hunter ed instructors. They also did an excellent pelt preperation DVD that will really help new trappers from the table to the boards a great instructional DVD for new trappers. The other DVD is Trapper Education Video series that shows just a bunch of good info on trapping. I would suggest before you all bash this program to get ahold of somebody that is a Trappers Ed instructor and look it all over, I think you are going to be really surprised how professional and well written the info is. The manual is the best trapper ed manual I have seen put out covers alot of stuff on specie history, trapping history, equipment etc. This was 2+ years in the making and many people from many states all had a role giving state trapper ed manuals to be looked at, and a board of people that did a great job on this manual of 145 pages.

The IAFWA Trapper Ed Manual that I saw listed Rick TisChafer as the author.
Isn't this correct Trappincoyotes37?

No not correct, Rick and others where on the board on this project but the primary author is listed as I stated. It is a joint effort of many and yes Rick did have a hand as did many, many others. Why do you have a problem with Rick?
I don't think it is "for sale" I think any trapper ed instructor can receive the copy's free of charge at least I was not charged. It also is made to add to or modifiy for each state and special needs or can be used as is. It comes in PDF format and another as well.

Just wondering, the Fur Handeling and animal lifecycle info should be standard fare. In the trapping methods and trap usage area of the instruction manual. How does the language reflect the language of the BMP documents? Does it for example outline the BMP passed equipment, and suggest the same methods tested? Or is it different?

Yes of course it will have info put out from the BMP's as IAFWA and many states had input into the final product. Rigs for taking water sets down and out as well.Yep shows "drowner's" It also has an area in the back that states a variety of traps to be used for species as well. It also list many things as options and not mandates. It shows alot on trappers being responsible and giving real life scenarios for kids/adults new to trapping to work through. Again they made it in achnageable format, I know alot "wish" it had mandates and just a printed form that couldn't be changed so states can add or change it because that would fit into the "bias" many want to see but sorry it is not, rather a well thought out and well written trappers ed manual.

So, How do I go about getting a copy?? Who do I contact??
Come on man.. Hook a brother up.. I'm willing to pay for it. It sounds like something that needs to be made available for all trappers.. Another tool in the tool box..
Hell, for what it's worth, I'm an instructor, just a small one. I've shown a dozen buddies the do's & don'ts of trapping & now they have their own traps and are catching creatures.. More trappers are born, more comrades for the trapping faternaty..
I'd hate to think that I was "instructing" them in the wrong direction..
Pm me w/ the info if ya want.. Thanks, Roy

M-35 the manual will be online shortly on the IAFWA website. Better yet go to your state Hunters ed or trappers ed Director take the time and become a certified instructor and give back your knowledge and then have the ability to influance your state and the direction you would like to see it go!

This was 2+ years in the making and many people from many states all had a role giving state trapper ed manuals to be looked at, and a board of people that did a great job on this manual of 145 pages. There were already good trapping educational manuals out there, like the WI.So why try and re-invent the wheel.

Not re-invengting the wheel, look at it and you will see when available. It is a collaboration of many states and their policys and information on trappers ed, that make this the most indpeth well written trappers ed manual out their. Many states have different hunt ed manuals but the "Hunt Safe" manual by IHEA is the top of the list as far as indpeth hunters ed manuals go. No different than the trappers ed manual put out by the IAFWA and help from many orgs in thso collaboration and even IHEA hepled out they have over 70,000 hunt ed instructors nation wide. Again this manual cna bem modified to use what best fits your state.

I have read the comments of TC37, and he is truly a cheering section for the BMP.
Again, I hesitate to post, but in his thread about the "New media tools" for the BMP, he continues to describe that trapper ed document as the best thing since the coil spring.
TC, do you supports the "All traps must be checked every 24 hours, and ethical trappers will check them early in the day."
How can you support language that would put every western long-liner out of business? Every high country marten trapper?
an answer to the effect of "Every state will incorporate what itwants--these are not mandates." won't cut it.
That is why FTA wrote to every DNR in the country and begged them to discuss this stuff with their state trapping associations before acting on it--we got many DNR directors whothanked us and promised to do as we asked.
Why is it so critical that the IAFWA must insist on its special propaganda, and to hell with the consequences? Fixing that wording would have taken me about 20 minutes.
I was told by Samara that Scott Hartman had options for input on edits (FTA did NOT) -- I like Scott, but how could he (As an NTA trapping expert) endorse a document that says that?
My Websters defines "mealymouthed" as "Unwilling to express facts clearly and plainly."
Also, (In a less direct problem) it has a chapter telling about the horrors of historical "market hunters" who drove many western animals near extinction. It seems to be implying that anyone who makes money off of wildlife is immoral.
Then there are Sinrud's issues over bad definitions...
I would be the first to agree that there is lots of good in the document. Its probably 90% excellent, 5% silly, and 5% absolutely unacceptable. Must the NTA always compromise away our rights?
Why must the IAFWA continue to insert a teaspoon of cyanide in the otherwise fine pie?

Tiny first off the testing was all done on a 24 hr check so that let that be known, also the manual is in a format to be changed and added to or sections changed to fit each state! Most all of the Eastern US has 24 hr check laws for land sets, the west I'm not worried about as the states who receive this know they can change and modify the wordage on this, also many states years ago used the same kind of verbage when talking about being responsable trappers, this instills ehtics into younger people. Read some of the wordage in hunters ed and you will see the same type of wordage to instill safe hunting and ethical hunting practices, is alot of it law? No Way judgement calls and left to each state.
No one is going out of business, if you think so talk to your STATE Game agency and ask them their thoughts and inject yours to them. I live out west and can tell you that has NO bearing on my state for private trappers whatsoever, matter of fact it was just a few years back they received longer check laws not shorter.
Also, (In a less direct problem) it has a chapter telling about the horrors of historical "market hunters" who drove many western animals near extinction. It seems to be implying that anyone who makes money off of wildlife is immoral
Show me in the manual where it states trappers as immoral? The counter to that would be correct in the manula that trapping serves a vital role, you want to belive in your mind this to show bias, the fact is many animals where over hunted and over trapped that is factual and part of history!!!!
That is why we have game laws today, without them we wouldn't have near the wildlife we do or do you disagree with that statement as well? In fact they go on to tell how many species through direct trapper input and work has helped bring back many species today.
Then there are Sinrud's issues over bad definitions
Go read the post on that issue as well. You can't define things without having all the data. Good day!
Its probably 90% excellent, 5% silly, and 5% absolutely unacceptable. Must the NTA always compromise away our rights?
I'll take a 90% acceptance rate on anything as you can not please all the people all the time.
