I need a good professional publication on why it's bad news to relocate wildlife, let alone being illegal. Thanks

If you are looking for publications, you are probably going to have to do the search yourself- for example- searching for "wildlife relocation" comes up with search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22wildlife+relocation%22&fr=my_top quite a few sources here- main points: 1) relocation leads to spread of diseases 2) relocation of animals has a very low survival rate- some studies show close to 100% mortality after relocation.

Case in point, we had an island that was connected to the mainland via a bridge up in NH on Lake Winnipesaukee. There is no hunting of any kind allowed on islands in the lake. This island had always been inhabited by a healthy population of deer. As soon as the island got developed and the out of state land owners started clearing out some of the woods and growing tasty plants, the herd mushroomed, all vegetation on the island was stripped to anout 6 feet off the ground in about 4 years, the animals rights out of state do gooders would not let the Fish and Game department open an archery season to thin the herd. Things got worse, after years of argueing over how to fix it, they spent several hundred thousand dollars to take 80 whitetails off the island and relocate them, some miles away in very nice habitat. They ALL DIED!!!!
Now much to the bemoaning of the landowners, a sharp shooter goes in every other year and takes between 60 and 100 deer which are donated to a food bank.

That Audubon link was the best one I could find so far. I may print some info and give it to a land owning do gooder. She thinks shes doing critters a favor but the results are quickly showing, and causing problems. I tried to tell her. For now I think I'll just read, learn, and stay out of it, but I know its wrong, and I wish I could teach her.

Relocating animals is also against the law in most states- you might check that aspect out.
EDIT- I see you metioned being illegal in your first post- so why mess around- call the CO- let him talk to her.

Check through your stack of FFG, see if you have the Jan 96 issue. If so, turn to page 26.
If you don't have that issue, pm me your snail mail addy and I will mail you a xerox copy of the article.
