On way home fm Wisconsin TRappers Rondezvou in Marshfield saw yote mousing next to cut off hay field. Now that and the smell of yote and fox urine at convention gets the blood a perculating. Plus the sumac and some maple trees turning colors.....

I've use sumac, black walnut hulls, and a few others.
Have to say I just use the dye now- so much easier and results are about the same.
Putting your bark or hulls in a cloth bag help in keeping "junk" off the traps.
I'm so far behind this year. Do have all my dry dirt (last 5 gals yesterday), got my gophers in freezer, and peat drying.
Thats about it. Everyone and I mean everyone has hay off at the same time- this past 2 weeks has been a blur with gopher trapping. And this old man can feel it! We have 3 farms set up yet, 1 to set up today and 5 to still do. Should have all but 2 done this week. Thank God its been dry- rain days would have put us so far behind we couldn't recover.
Went to WI, had a good time- sure is a different convention if you aren't selling. Did a coyote demo 100% without any mechanicals such as traps- I think it went over well- was shocked when my time was up- thought I had a good half hour to go.
To do: talk to farmers, dye and wax traps. For the price of made cable stakes, I went the easy route and bought them this year- I just hate to make them-
Still have to cut screens, but 3 rolls bought and ready.
Can't wait.

Thank you for doing your demo Steve. Glad you came over and supported our event. Pretty strong rondy from reports that I heard.I too am way behind this year and doubt if I will get all things done that were in the plan.

Sheesh at our age we should have plenty of time to get out braclets and necklaces ready to go.....LOL.....could it be we might be just a tad slower or more things on our plates. Busted butt doing outside work yesterday and garden and when it got dark made a camp fire out in back yard...... Boy was it nice especially when two differant packs of yotes conducted a sing song between each other....divided by a main road in front of house.... that made the blood perc up but it twas 10:30 pm and wasnt going to dig out the boiler....LOL !

Slowly getting there- got the traps dyed and waxed- used black dye this year and like it. Today doing the "short" day of talking to farmers when Lori gets home. Really looking forward to season this year.
Doing a few things different-
My traps are getting old, so 4 coiled them all. Last year had losses I shouldn't have had.
Have been running 18" cables, changed to 12" this year. Also- since I hate making cables and price of ready made not that much higher, bought all my cables pre made
Am going to try a trick set- with all the gophers coyotes eat, and how they work the sets (just like Mickey when he checks my traps- goes from one flag to another) we are going to, on farms where we gopher traps 4-5 times during the summer- a set with just a flagged fence post, a hole with a fake mound (if you get to close to a mound with a hole, gophers will find it an plug your dirthole) and nothing but a trap and a gopher. If it works, and it should, I'll come up with a fancy name for it...lol
Getting into my new mindset of have fun and trap smart- I've eliminated a few locations, and will be running a relatively small amount of traps, albeit over a large area. 1st and smallest loop will be a few over 40 traps, covering 138 miles. Other loops will have from 50-65 with comparable mileage.
On good days, thats enough to keep me busy, and on bad or poor weather days- its more than enough.
Water will be different again like the past 2 years- I'm just running a fun line. Call it a hobby line if you will. Paid my dues on the longlines- fun...but not FUN if you get my drift. If I had the coon volume, to be able to take a bunch of coon each check, I'd hit them hard all winter- but I don't. Populations at a low, low period- same with rats and mink. So I'm not going to fight the weather anymore- I'll just run 30-40 traps for a few weeks, take the cream and enjoy the winter.
2 weeks from today, I'll be setting for coyotes. Can't wait!

got my first run of farmers done- one farm the woman says good timing- big coyote standing by barn today.
The big dairys are 1/3 to 1/2 done with chopping, should be dry for a week. What we need is a good frost- beans just starting to go where I was yesterday.
Today- cleaning out the junk shed- we have a cleanup days sat, so can get rid of it. I have tons of junk trap parts, broken crap, etc that I've stored for years that lets face it, if I could use it I would have by now.
No one else planning to trap this year?

All marten boxes are inspected and ready to go. That is where the bread and butter is.
Canid traps have been ready to go for a couple of months. There seems to be a few more fox than last year. We will see.
Culvert damming beaver are on their final days. Those off the roads will live.
Been chasing the geese for a week or so and the ducks are now on the list. Having a hoot but the 4 a.m. wake up is rough.
Extremely hot weather lately. The flies are thick and the dog fur is rough. I think the wild fur won't be much better. Odd fall. We are actually in a heat wave right now with people re-starting their swimming pools.

Here in North central Wi bvr numbers really down even with low fur prices on them. Havent had a ADC call in a year. Possibly local trappers taking care of problems.....on other hand skunks , coon, foxes alot of calls and $$$$$$$$. Lots of yotes and of course deer hunter land owners dont want you on their land till after deer season and then dont want to pay ANYTHING even those that raise trophy bucks inside pens. I just run my own yote lines and let the landowners stew in their yote problems.
