www.nafa.ca/wild-fur-update-jan-2017/The 2017 selling season for ranch raised mink opened in Kopenhagen this past week with an offering of 2.3 million mink. After a strong September 2016 sale, we were all optimistic that we would see an increase over September, or at least similar price levels. Unfortunately, in general, ranch mink prices declined by 10% to 15% compared to September. According to most of the buyers, the timing of this sale, being prior to Chinese New Year, was very unattractive as most, if not all of the dressing factories and manufacturers in China were closed for Chinese New Year. We are still of the opinion that our decision to hold back the majority of our fresh wild fur offering until our May sale, to maximize our wild fur prices, is in the best interests of all our producers. At this time, Michael Mengar, Rob Cahill and Oscar Carbonell, along with our entire China team, are at the Beijing Fur Fair. After the Fair, Michael will be going to Korea, and Oscar will be conducting a new round of Technical Buyer Workshops in Hebei and Nanjing. I am leaving for Hong Kong this weekend to spend next week visiting the trade there. Our next wild fur update will be posted on January 26th. Herman Jansen

Thank you Ron for the update. Not encouraging to see the decline in the mink prices as I mostly rat trapped this year and plan to ship my 300 out for the May sale. Looks like a good year to be thinking about new ideas for next fall as it does not seem that there will be a sizable recovery by then either, maybe by next spring. I read quite a bit regarding worldwide economics and there could be a spending shift as countries and buyers become more stable in their middle class lives. If they start to spend more on housing, transportation, travel, education etc. that may leave fewer dollars for fur of any type and that could result in some long term depression of fur prices like we saw in the 50s and 60s.
