I wasn't going to make any effort to start him, figured I'd just let nature take it's course. here a few weeks ago, he started tonguing in the front yard. A few squeeks, then a full bawl then he was off! a short time later in the back yard, jumped a bunny, had a sight chase, then spent 15 minutes working it in some grasses. Since then, he want to trail everything so at 5 months, self started with almost zero opportunity- in hundreds of pups, never had one start so easy. I prefer more a slow measured style, hes going to be lots faster, but expected that considering he was out of gundog breeding might have to get the old shotgun out and hunt a few bunnies next year. my boy is getting to be a man

For my daughter's sixth birthday we got her a beagle pup, the dog is about 13 years old now. I'm not positive, but the puppy was only 6 or 7 weeks old when we brought her home. The little dog named Tina was our house pet, was constantly with me, where ever I went.
We got her in June, I had her out one day, she was about 10 or 12 weeks old, and I saw a baby bunny. The little bunny let me walk within 12 or 15 feet of it, Tina spotted it hop off. I put her on the trail, and Tina opened up right then, little tiny squeaks, but she sniffed all over the place, she was hunting!
She's grown into a very good dog, I used to take Dad and Kimberly out on the farm, just turn Tina loose, we'd sit in the truck when it was too cold for Kim and Dad to be outside and watch and listen. Tina is over the hill now, but the best $50 I've ever spent!

took Mickey out last week to a friends that said he had plenty of bunnies- he might, but way to many holes- a nocturnal population I'm guessing- we hunted for 2 hours and never kicked up a bunny- but Mickey worked hard trying to find one- he is still giving the rabbits heck here in our yard.

I guess that a few early mornings are in your future. The lengthening days will make those bunnies see more daylight when they stay out of their holes.

Four of us were out last week, hunted the best 2 places we have. With 3 dogs, jumped one rabbit, it ran about 300 yards, straight line and holed. Good chase while it lasted.
But I'll bet we could have made the same hunt the next day, or 2 days later and maybe jumped 5 or 6. Never know?
We just don't have much good cover. Places where we do have cover, it's beside the highway, too risky to turn a dog loose.
