Or, maybe I should say it's the set I most ENJOY making. There are locations that are great right now, such as in the video but as the season gets later the more locations that present themselves and the trapping just keeps getting better and better!. youtu.be/3E45RHusyqA

talking to JC one time, and he told me that as he got older, he far preferred trial sets over baited sets- not so much because they produced better, he just liked catching them more in trial sets.
now that's a drag mark- what type of drags are you using? I only used drags for the majority of my sets in WY one time, and there, they were all hung up within feet of the set, so never had a chance to follow a drag, but of the drags I used, I like the tracker type best. here, I only use drags in a few locations, and again, they don't get much past the set

Just homemade ones made from scrap with each point angled 30 degrees. One point angled above the shaft and one angled opposite.

Enjoyable video. Thanks for posting it. What is drawing the coyotes to that area? Thank you for the compliment Musher, I'm enjoying showing you folks my area. As those that have viewed the videos by now can see, I write just the way I talk. Deer, rabbits, and waterfowl in the pit. The pit is being constantly pumped down but there's still a lot of varying-size pockets of water with grasses. The pit is roughly a 1/2 mille long and 1/4 mile wide. Hopefully with the slash and the brush/stump piles, the rabbit and other small game populations will have a short window of opprotunity in which to increase. I see the bobcat population is down this year and the ruffed grouse population is up. The down-side of this property is that I figure by next fall the pit will be where my trail sets are today so the slash and brush piles are only temporary!

Nice videos Never. I love those gravel pits, 2 years ago I caught 11 out of and around a pit. The biggest coyote and his mate I caught were on trail sets, just like you are showing.

Those gravel pits are a sure draw for sure and not only canines. Trails, the low part of pit and the high ridge are all possible sets depending on the situation.

I've had a little over 2" of rain in the last 2 days so tomorrow I'll be rebaiting and reluring my sets but I may have a chance to take the time to film the sand pit. It's as deep as the excavbator can reach and the only way down into it is by climbing. It's a good opprotunity to show my area for understanding purposes.

Since October 28th we have had just a bit under 8 inches of rain. Our last bunch was near 3 inches. Everything is flooded and moving fast. My favorite set right now is put a sod on a plywood float and set and bait the trap and put a drag and chain on and push the sod float and trap out into the flooded field and wait for the water to go down and the trap will position itself in the sodded field. This is the one I use for the hay fields. You could do the plowed field ones with dirt. LOL. Really miserable here with muddy water all over and moving fast. Lots of flood warnings in the villages and cities. Farmers here are worried with all that water logged sod ground which will really weaken the alfalfa stands and increase fungal root rot diseases. Never went dormant yet this fall so if it tries to breathe in the wet soil the plants will drown out, maybe the winter wheat too.

My rain gauge tipped over at 5 in. and then we got 2 in. of snow. Every thing is flooded here water standing in the fields what a mess.Second wettest Dec. on record but not even close to being done.

I got a quick chance to film part of the sand pit this morning but hurrying to a doctor's appointment probably didn't do the filming justice. youtu.be/3yVNpNXVzP0

Not much "cover" in that pit compared to what I consider to be "cover."

Not much "cover" in that pit compared to what I consider to be "cover." Absolutely correct Musher! The "cover" is a many, many mile radius around the pit. The pit is only of interest to the coyote for prey. Lots of ducks and geese in early fall. Deer can't seem to stay out of it and when it's froze, the deer seem not to be able to stay off the ice. The Pit Mgr tells of over the years in winter-time, watching coyote come out to the edge of the pit during the day, sit down and watch the pit and after a while turn and leave. This would occur several times a day throughout the winter months at several different but repetitive locations around the pit. My 1st coyote triple was caught right on the shoulder of the truck road that I was driving in today's video except the road was a good 100yds out from where the pit edge is today. The 1st house I built in 1971 is just up the road 1.5 miles from this property. 50 years ago, long before anyone apparently thought about digging sand I deer and pat hunted where the pit is today and all of the surrounding woods. In fact, when my dad moved down from Onaway MI when he was high school age, he and his brother-in-laws deer hunted the same woods so that was about 75 years ago. LOL
