This is what a girlfriend's get-together looks like in Alaska for my daughter and friends Heather and Rebecca.
The 3 of them did a fly-in hunting trip out of Tok, AK last week. Danielle's friend Heather's husband flies a small plane. It took 3 trips to get the ladies and all their gear into a remote outpost. On Monday they set up camp and on Tuesday walked in about 2 miles to find a good spot to hunt.
As luck would have it, a big bull moose came by. Danielle (aka Ellie)shot and it walked away into the woods but was huffing and puffing so she was sure she hit it. They snuck around to check it out and Heather got a glimpse through the woods and shot again and it went down. However, there was a cow moose who must have had love on her mind, and it was hanging around, which can get very dangerous, so Rebecca went up on a hill where she could see it clearly and, when she could, took a couple shots in the ground to chase it away. They shot the bull around 7:30pm and it took them until 2am or so to get it all cut up and packed in game bags. By that time they were worried about bears so they had built a big bonfire and sat up all night on watch. With some major difficulty and several trips they packed the meat (632 lbs boned out) out the 2 miles. On one trip back they noticed the moose carcass had been covered up with leaves and moss by a bear.
Ellie - Heather - Rebecca 61" rack
It would take the pilot 6 trips (3 for meat 3 for the girls) to get back to Tok. Unfortunately after 3 trips with the meat, they got socked in by snow and fog and were unable to get out again until Sunday. These ladies come prepared though (I think wine was involved) and survived in good style.
Turned out the moose only had one hole in it (lung shot) so they are really not sure which of the shots killed it.
Someone had to backpack the 50lb rack out - looks like Rebecca got the honor lol
The moose meat will feed all 3 families this winter. The rack is making the circuit, they started in TOK where Heather lives, then went to Delta Junction to Ellie's office at AK Fish & Game Dept. and then making their way up to Fairbanks where Rebecca lives. I suspect it will end up on the roof of the Mason's barn with several others.
Gee, on my girlfriend's get-aways we usually just went to a bowling tournament.
Cheers
Pam
