Came home from trapping today, and the best dog I've ever owned, died peacefully in his sleep. Jan 1 2014 he was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, the vet gave him a month of two- 20 months later he finally lost the battle. He was in very good health considering up until 6 weeks ago, and he had a relapse but he wasn't in pain, and still ate and went trapping a few times and went for rides- and he died, loved, at home and what more could I want? I've owned beagles al my life, hundreds and I'll miss him the most. All I can say is Buddy- you were a good dog. RIP

I was a beagle guy and it's darn tough to watch the inevitable coming and when it does, you're still not prepared for it. A breed that seems to want to do everything it can to please you. RIP Buddy

Sorry to hear about the dog, Steve. Good dogs turn grey days into sunshine, don't they? Sure do miss a couple of 'em I've owned over the years.
See you in September.

That really sucks. But it's the contract we sign when we get them. We bury them. That's a good thing because the opposite REALLY sucks!
Your dog lived a good dog life.
So, you can't live without a beagle. You also like mature dogs. You aren't replacing him but a dog guy has a dog. Go get one - today. Otherwise the walls will echo and that just seems to drag things out.

Steve how old was Buddy ? I don't post much at all but I remember when your last hound passed and you eventually got him. Sorry to hear about him passing. It sure can be hard on a man to dig a hole for a good dog.

I agree, it's best to find a new dog, quick as you can. When you've got a fresh puppy running around, no way that a feller can feel bad.

Sorry about your beagle. Be thankful that you didn't have to take him to the vet, and that he passed at home where he was comfortable. I lost my male beagle "Babe" back in Feb. He just came in from outside , layed down on the rug and died. He was 15 years 8 months old.

Buddy turned 14 aug 4th.
yes, bobber- I was so glad I didn't make that decision.
I'll have to be honest- We are taking it hard-
Have had several friends offer me dogs- but I've owned nothing but beagles since age 12
I'm going to wait a little bit...when its time, I'll know it. nice to know how us hard trappers can love dogs so much.

My condolences Steve and Lori, Buddy was family and sorry to hear him go. Sounds like he went peacefully. See you in Marshfield.

Buddy sure was a good dog, even though when he was caught in one of Rally's demo snares going nose to nose with his lab, he didnot panic and just stood there. You could never train a lab that, or Rally

lol- I had forgotten about that.
I'll tell you, my interest in the yard has been about zero since- our morning routine (me and Buddy) was to go out, he'd putter and I'd putter in the yard. Hard to get motivated without that routine.
but- its time. Will be making a couple of calls today to some old beagle friends- since the new dog will most likely be our last, we want a pup 3-6 months, or thereabouts. now its just finding the right one.

There ya go! I'm really happy for both of you. A pup will stir things up just right. buy lots of paper towels. My pup is getting me up 2-3 times a night!
